The only measure by which Mystic Snake is better is that its cost is less color-specific. It's not lower, it's just easier.
But the tradeoff of this having one more power and two relevant creature types (note the Riptide Laboratory interaction mentioned above that Snake doesn't get)... is a pretty good compensation for the bulkier color requirement.

2 power is also more important in certain interactions (in Commander at least)
@thatmarkguy
Have to agree with NerdSoda on this. In commander, the difference between 3 and 2 power is negligible in combat. The casting cost is a big difference though, and 2 power is a relevant number for interactions. I am going to stick with my mystic snake in commander. Since neither will see play in any other format where both are legal that is really the only format to compare them in. I suppose you could talk about casual, but at that point it's not really about better or worse so much as preference/availability.
The card is sweet, but i imagine it will be relegated to the sb outside of limited. The ability is strong in a lot of matchups on turn 4, but most of the time it won't be castable on trun 4 plus green isn't really a control color so it's better as a way to fight tefari, sweepers, that sort of thing. I imagine wanting it when you still need threats to close the game before your opponent goes over the top, but you want to bring in more interaction.

Not sure if it matters, but that counter ETB is also optional.
Now we know we the new birthing pod on a stick is sorcery speed lol. Tap out for relevant 3 drop with counterspell up. Glad they saw that one coming.
I would have liked 3/3. I think it would have been fine. Also, as glad as I am it's an elf...merfolk seems like it would have been a better fit for the current standard environment?
Don't expect any waves in modern - however UG elves can threaten coco or counterspell beginning t3 now lol. Let the mind games begin.

As a former modern merfolk player, I would love for it to be a Merfolk. But sadly, I don't get what I want.
We're already on page two and nobody has commented that she looks like a Twi'lek? For shame.

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
princess snake, mystic snake, solid snake, liquid snake, snakes on a plane...good grief.

There is one fun note to this card - Mystic Snake _has_ to counter a spell if there was one on the stack. Frilled Mystic doesn't have to for the counter target spell is optional.

This card does so much simply by creature type.
