It would be interesting if there were different modes rather than different amount of 1/1 flyers.
Imagine if:
afterlife 1 was one 1/1 spirit
afterlife 2 was a 2/2 knight
afterlife 3 was a 3/3 centaur
etc.
So, you die, and then you haunt the living as a generic knight or a completely different species?
Also I suspect that simic will have populate as a mechanic as it plays nicely with tokens...
It would not make a lot of sense to give a mechanic that used to be for one guild to another, and moreover Simic doesn't share any colors with Orzhov. They'll get a counter mechanic, as usual, because that's their overarching theme.
Wonder if the "Afterlife 1" keyword means it pops out only 1 token, or a 1/1 token?... So would "Afterlife 2" mean you get two 1/1 tokens or one 2/2 token?
I have a feeling Afterlife 2 means two 1/1 tokens, but am still looking for clarity.
For the sole reason that they want to print token cards , it would be a hell of s surprise if they end up as growing tokens.
If they wanted to go that way, they probably would have made them 0/0 with +1/+1 counters equal to Afterlife, which they didnt.
So its as good as guaranteed that it makes more tokens.
Having more smaller tokens also works better with Convoke, better with Mentor, so it just all speaks to it.
But i also think we will see not too many >1 Afterlife, outside of rares or mythics.
Yeah, mechanically it makes sense... but then to get an Afterlife X where "X" is greater than one would need to be more than one creature in the name and/or artwork. Maybe be like a roaming gang of thugs a trio of soldiers, since I doubt it would be insinuated that more than one spirit resides in a body (unless a body is killed while possessed by a spirit, heh....). All of the sudden the Afterlife keyword sounds like it would fit better into Innistrad instead of Ravnica.
Funny choice for a mechanic after Kaya has taken over
Not too odd.
Haunt was always misplayed and kinda weak.
Extort violated the color pie by being simply a B (or possibly RW, not(R/W)) mechanic.
So now we're going with ghosts.
Anyway, this hatebear hates so much, after he's done hating you, he goes after your family. Which is very Orzhov.

Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!
Nonbo with Rest In Peace. Also Nonbo with the new Lavinia. Doesn't do anything for humans.
I guess Devoted Druid decks when they combo off?
This still works with new Lavinia. Even if your opponents gos to cast a spell on your turn with CMC equal to the spell their casting they need and extra 1. Forcing your opponents to have to only do things on their turn while being able to still do things on their turn is a big tempo advantage.
On another note, with Afterlife being a mechanic expect a reprint of Phantom General in the set.

I mean the second ability of the new Lavinia is negated, since Tithe Taker forces the player to pay 1 mana for a 0 mana spell. This is important because it also means Lavinia cannot stop suspend spells.

Tithe Taker taxs your opponents during your turn. Your opponents suspend triggers go off on their upkeep i.e-not on your turn 😉.

My kingdom for an Anger of the Gods. This mechanic seems pretty powerful. It could be a nightmare to break through ground stalls in standard.
In Standard only? Afterlife dorks will make so many Limited games a total stall. Just imagine if there still were mixed drafts, and someone loaded up on Selesnya token producers and then hoarded all afterlife critters from the RNA pack, and of course the enchantment that gives all your creatures Afterlife 1 (sounds plausible to me, maybe at 3WB or something like that.
With that being said, I agree we'd need Anger of the Gods or a similar exiling sweeper if Afterlife shows up in a lot of cheap and playable creatures.
seen quite a bit of insane hype around this card, but most of it was from people who read the card incorrectly? (in fact I think this might be the single most misread card in a spoiler season i've come across in years....which is weird... can anyone think of another more misinterpreted card in recent memory?)
defense grid is a fairly close analogue, i guess (not in quantity but in effect). not thalia, guardian of thraben (i.e. a static all-the-time ability) which seemed to be the most common interpretation.
there must be something about the way it's worded that tricks people into assuming it works a different way to what it says on the card.
I do like how it almost doubles up as a weird leonin arbiter (aka cat jesus) for fetchlands. that's kinda nice although you'd need aether vial to really take advantage of its taxing effect. Not necessarily a problem, as most decks that want this will be playing aether vial, but worthwhile to point it out.
Orzhov suddenly feels like the go-to guild or at least splash in limited. Your removal now has to work double time. Even if the tokens are flying spirits (which makes flavour sense given afterlife...duh), your opponents now have to content with flying threats. If they have no way of dealing with that then the game is yours more or less.

Not even in supplemental products like Commander Pre-cons? I thought they did, but now I can't think of an example off the top of my head.
Retroactive, reprint-less application of a non-evergreen keyword or ability word has occurred precisely once in the game's history, which was when Domain ended up on a bunch of Invasion-block cards when Conflux released ten years ago. There is no substantive precedent for such an action. Somehow, people still go around acting like slapping exert on every tap-and-can't-untap-next-untap-step card is a natural thing to do, for some reason. The reverse, in which people think that random one-off cards that resemble a pre-existing keyword or ability word should have it, such as people demanding that Inventors' Fair's abilities be preceded by metalcraft in spite of such a thing going against the entire point of ability words, also crops up without any kind of precedent whatsoever.

The only exception I can think of is the Domain mechanic from Conflux, which was added to a few cards retroactively from the Invasion/Planeshift era.
Afterlife seems like it'd be welcome in Orzhov Commander decks.
