Cool. Now when will the Arena Mac client be released? No mention of MTGO which doesn't bode well for its future IMO. This is a very significant change for WotC to throw millions behind Arena for real tournaments.

MTGO is awful for the e-sports community.
It's obvious that Arena is tailored made for this type of tournament.
Additionally, it's no secret that MTGO will eventually be phased out. I think it's going to happen more quickly than what most people think.
I'm curious to know how they gauge who the 32 top players will be for both paper and MTGA. Will these be the same players? Or two separate groups? Will it be based on ratings or whatever?

That's a good question. I struggle with the idea of "Pro Leagues" because of players like Mike Long or Andrey Yanyuk and their overall behavior. That is all on top of WotC's lackadaisical attitude towards these players.
Going pure digital removes this aspect of the game unless they pull some Counter Strike level bullocks. To put it simply, WotC simply doesn't have to deal with cheaters as they can simply point towards Arena to handle it for them.

Until WotC has a way for people to play vintage, legacy, modern, pauper and commander on arena (which will likely be years if ever) MTGO will exist. The amount of people might only be a small percentage of the playerbase but the negative PR if they abandoned those formats online would hurt far more than the cost of just keeping MTGO online.
So is Arena more of a priority than paper Magic now?
Seems likely, far cheaper to do digital than paper, especially when there's no way to actually cash out once you've put money into arena. Wizards are the only winners every time someone buys off there.
"Screw the other formats, Standard or bust!" this will end great when Standard turns to crap in 2 years when Ravnica rotates out and the mana base goes south again.
Seems likely, far cheaper to do digital than paper, especially when there's no way to actually cash out once you've put money into arena. Wizards are the only winners every time someone buys off there.
That is the number one limitation in the game, imo
I have put $25 into it - that I got when I sold out of MTGO - and I have no desire to put more into Arena because it feels so much more wasteful
Seems likely, far cheaper to do digital than paper, especially when there's no way to actually cash out once you've put money into arena. Wizards are the only winners every time someone buys off there.
So like every other digital game. :]
I'm sure this is a 'feature' to Wizards, not a bug.
Well the thing is because paper magic cards have significant value and MTGO cards have (or at least used to have) similar significant value and could be redeemed from digital to paper the online user base have come to expect that their digital items have real money worth and can be traded and cashed out whenever they like.
If arena was a brand new game and no one knew any better they'd obviously think far less of the fact their collections are worth nothing.
So you play Arena or get ****ed. Because with no Nationals, no MWC, no Pro Club, no Team Series. Rebranded RPTQs and PTQs with undisclosed means of qualification that can only be run by "hand picked WPN members". If you don't live near a big store in a big city, you're already ****ed.
Wouldn't even be surprised if the 32 MPL members have already been chosen anyway.
I'm sure this won't bite them in the ass next time they make Standard ***** and the safety net of people playing other formats at MTGO and the LGS isn't there to save them.

You know...I would actually love to see the numbers for these formats. Wish WOTC was more transparent with that.
Excluding modern, I would actually think that the number of players for the other eternal formats is actually relatively small. And the majority of these players already play paper magic anyways. No one can complain about the price entry of pauper you know.
I don't think WOTC cares at all whatsoever about Vintage or Legacy. These are not formats it supports (or they are on life support). It's a healthy community that organizes their own tournaments.
Additionally, WotC doesn't see a penny from the secondary market and thus, have even less reason to support it - let's not forget that these are NOT the people that are putting money into the game anyways.
From a purely business perspective, WotC has all the reasons to continue to focus on both e-sports via arena and standard. That's their cash cow.
Porting older formats might be in the plans only because it will allow them to take in even more money for all the wild cards you'll need to put together to get a deck. The economy of mtga might actually have to shift in order to support these formats.
I've had this opinion for a while now, but I think WotC absolutely wants to kill paper magic. Mtga is way more profitable for them. And the logistics, don't get me started.
I predict that paper magic is no longer supported within 10 years, based on how things are moving currently.
MTGA will move to mobile and you'll get "fire gatherings" like hearthstone to play in.
Magic is getting turned into a video game. The end of days of the TCG are near us my fellow friends.
I think this sounds okay. Arena is the future, MTGO already feels like it's on life support and the Modern format will only get worse with time, so it's not going to be around forever.
For the last ten years, they have shifted their focus away from high level competitive play with their core audience being wannabe pros (not meant as derogatory, I am one myself) to more casual players who shy away from overly spiky environments, which is a smart move for them from a financial standpoint since the latter group is far larger. This is them showing some love to the spikes, the aspiring high level players, the competitors. We don't know the details yet, so it's still tough to say how this will pan out, but I like that competitive play is something that they choose to pay attention to.
All that aside... For the last few years they have shown themselves completely unable to not give their new things horribly lame names. Mythic Championship? About as cringeworthy as MagicFest. Ultimate Masters? GRN Mythic Edition? I will be biting my nails until the day they announce their new Arena-friendly non-rotating format in fear that they give it some super lame name that we will have to use to refer to our new favourite constructed format for the next 15 years. The Guildpact format, anyone? Planeswalker? Multiverse? Mythic format? Or maybe something confusing like Eternal, or Arena (so that we will constantly be asking "Arena the format or Arena the client?").
Edit: I don't see anything in that newsletter that I think seems threatening to paper Magic, where are you picking that up? If anything's under the axe here, it's the Modern format.
Yeah they clearly want the game that spawned an economy of it's own an a handful of community-created formats dead in favor of absolute control.
Who the **** wants to play Commander, Pauper, Penny Dreadful or Tribal Wars? Play Standard or die.
So much hyperbole, I'm literally laughing out loud here. They will not break into your house at night and rip your cards up. When did Rumor Mill become RudyLand?
I'm thoroughly unsatisfied with this announcement.
The small things first: the new naming convention just seems terrible, I'm beginning to think by design. That way it's much easier to gaslight us and ram through these changes which might have caused street riots if they were presented in layman's terms.
The meat of the announcement seems to boil down to promises of more programs for a game that is still in open beta stage of development while simultaneously gutting the entire tabletop organized play system as we know it. They did manage to give us a redeemable code for the 5th copies of cards we already have on MTGA so that makes it alright in their book I'm guessing?

In my dream, the world had suffered a terrible disaster. A black haze shut out the sun, and the darkness was alive with the moans and screams of wounded people. Suddenly, a small light glowed. A candle flickered into life, symbol of hope for millions. A single tiny candle, shining in the ugly dark. I laughed and blew it out.
Many thanks to HotP Studios. Special thanks to DNC for this great sig.
I absolutely hate that they're killing Nationals and WMC. Nationals was the #1 event I aimed for because it was very high level, yet I didn't need to travel for it. I hope there will be something similar.
Also, one of their usual bite sized info style pages here:
Not much to see there, but note how they are hammering it home: "MTG Arena and tabletop Magic" over and over, they have no plans to kill paper. No reason to believe that. People are predicting the death of paper magic here and on Twitter, but they have no reason to.
magic as esports ?
meh... i think there are many better titles, that are not only more entertaining, but also require more skill of the players.
in my eyes a strategic mistake, i guess its just something they want to happen but will not happen... but what do i know
Eh... You do know that Magic has been played at highly competitive levels for a while, and that it's wideky popular as it is, right? The game's suitedness for high level play can be discussed, but nothing about it changes now, except its vessel, and even that only for a portion of events.

Stay reasonable, be mindful of your expectations and don't feed the trolls.
So how do they get to 32 if the Top 10 of each is the same people? How will they split odd numbers of overlaps etc. If these two versions of the game (digital(MTGA)/paper) were mutually exclusive "16 each" might be an applicable answer, but as it is that guess is at least still incomplete.
