I would like the Pillageing part, but sadly WoTC does not like 3 cmc land destruction spells.. so the chance of reprint into standard is small.
And at this time last year the same could be said about 1CMC mana dorks.
Not saying they *will* reverse... but that they've been known to. It's not unheard of for them to return to print something they'd spent years describing as too good for standard.
Pillage likely faces the double-whammy of being against-current-standard-practice and, likely more damning, mentioning regeneration though.
I can not believe this is still open. Are forum standards on the decline?
Under what standard do you think it should be closed? I'll happily disclose my source privately if a moderator wants to message me, but I won't openly out him on a public forum, potentially costing him the gig.

I feel like a Rumor Mill thread should be based on some degree of evidence, something more than "my friend says", to be open and worth discussing. That's my perceived standard. If a mod on here comes out and says that your info seems legit, I'll believe that.

-I do wonder if Viking will be an official creature type rather than using barbarian/warrior. I would not be for this, like how they made naga an actual type rather than just using snake.
Maro said that in his pinion is better to make them a new creature type
That would be wonderful, taking a new creature type template onto one that would already fit.
Not too long ago somebody asked Maro on his tumbler blog if a hypothetical Norse set would have snow lands, and his reply was along the lines of “is that really something you all would expect from a Norse set?” Something about the tone of his question made me think that they were in the early stages of planning one but did not have snow-covered lands in the set. Most of the people that responded were in favor of them, so here’s hoping they can get them in.
Well guy WotC has horrible memory problems. Followed by stunned confusion. Followed by promises to do better, which is really just hollow and hide their annoyance the we don’t just shut up and buy their garbage.
Vikings will replace barbarians despite being only a good fit for a Norse themed set, Samurais and Ninjas all over again. Despite WotC getting flack for adding Nagas in stead of having them being Snakes 4 years ago. (If the Norse set is next fall.)
And we’ll get cards putting frost counters and stuff text that does stuff based on frost counters thus being a parasitic mechanic because they didn’t want to be restrained by the past and try something new, despite Arcane from Kamigawa being parasitc. Which they forgot about, no matter how much they swear they didn’t, when they made Energy a parasitic mechanic in Kaladesh.

How about you think more recently, Pirates and Dinosaurs are awful in every format, there was no reason to make them an independent creature type when Beast and Rogue would have fit just fine.
Also, will they make them discover America? That would be a great controversial story arc choice.
*Looks at his pile of snow lands in the corner.
I think snow is a given for the set as they haven't brought the power level up to current day MtG standards yet, meaning they got a lot of room to work with it.

Pirates and Dinosaurs already existed in the game prior to Ixalan. Sure they weren’t great as tribes, but adding more is only a benefit. Naga not being snakes is a detriment becuase it adds a new tribe that didn’t need to exist at all when an existing one was already available, in the wedge colors nagas where introduced in at that. Hell its stupid that viashino aren’t lizards despite being lizard people. Yet avens and leonin are fine being their types because their bird and cat people respectively.

NPC’s really ruin this game. It a fantasy game, its not a game about realistic culture display. Fantasy vikings wearing horned helmets doesn’t change our world. And most importantly this isn’t an educational game.
Schools and parents should be teaching their kids about that, not a non-educational fantasy hobby game.

No one plays this game becuase it accurate to reality. We play it because it a ******* fantansy hobby game. We play it to get a break from reality, not to reinforce it.

thankfully, the mtg-verse isn't related in any way to the actual-for-realsies-verse we live in - it's an artistic creation, occasionally inspired by the more exciting or interesting bits of our own cultures or whatever. accuracy isn't a thing
norse mythology and cultures are a bit of a goldmine. let's see if any of this rumour turns out to be true, and how, if at all, they use the vikings as an interesting nucleation point for fantasy shenanigans.

You want expand on that? I mean I do wonder if they will hire a cultural consultant or just mine Marvel Cinematic Universe Thor, Elder Scrolls Skyrim, and Game of Thrones. Norse Stuff has properly never been more popular in the States, well we might be a bit past the peak. What precise political correctness are you talking about? And please dont say too many women and not white people.
I was actually thinking about this yesterday and believe my friend may have been contacted for that reason. One of the potential challenges of making cards that are based on the Norse gods is that they are still followed modernly, unlike the Greco-Roman pantheon or Egyptian pantheon (save a few fringe "mystics"). Maybe Wizards worries about offending/angering the Asatru?
The Asatru are such reduced, niche, unrelated to MTG and its player base, and not worth caring about religious minority that you just might be right.
I think I've learned to treat Magic cards like baseball cards: keep 'em in a binder in numerical order, don't play with 'em, try to finish the set and just keep my head down.
You mean like Krakens in Theros?
It's about resonance, not accuracy.
Or about using MTG's influence and reach to battle misconceptions and stereotypes. They do it with other cultures all the time.
Without horns, they'll look like any old Barbarian or Warrior. The horned helmets are something popular imagination has come to associate with Vikings specifically. Most Ninja didn't historically wear dark cloth either, but without the characteristic ninja gi, they would just be plain old Rogues in MTG.
@Haccy_z: I got news for you, there weren't too many three-headed T-Rexes running around in the prehistoric, nor very many Incan knights using Dinosaurs as mounts. In the case of Ixalan's Dinosaurs, the feathers were chosen because it looked cooler and allowed for greater stylization.
MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
I remember when I took a trip to Greece and Heliod went up to me and asked if I'd like to be his champion. I asked him if he was going to stab me at any point during my career in his service and he said "Possibly". Yeah Magic is kinda getting too real for me.
I wouldn't mind a trip to viking land. It means we'll probably get a lightning dragon, which means dragon that's really good
May I ask from where the dwarf ideas come from when it comes to cold nothern countries?
It should be the opposite since nothern people are taller than any other part of the world.
I understand games, fantasy and Wizards of the Coast should not follow real world realism but I still have to ask: From where does the idea of dwarves are from the north comes from?
Dwarfs are prominent in norse mythology.
