Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.

The Giant, the Patrol and the Cyclops look great, thinking about it Bolster vs Mentor are interesting differences, although I think Mentor can't always choose something, while Bolster can.
I've been really digging the Undergrowth mechanic (pun not intended) especially in an EDH light. With surveil I think there can e a lot of interplay between Dimir and Golgori.

I think you'll want Connive // Concoct in that slot. Sure it can only pull from your own grave, but the triple surveil first gives you nicer selection and undergrowth support, better controls your next draw, it's not dead against Silent Gravestone (doesn't target a card in graveyard), and in a pinch it can be a tiny Control Magic instead.

With the drain spell that casts for free if milled, the Lotleth Giant may see in play in standard in UB surveil. Reanimate him with Concoct and easily kill an enemy.

StaffI assume you're looking for a 4 cmc card? I've been playing Sultai Reanimator for months, using Liliana, Death's Majesty, Yawgmoth's Vile Offering, Journey to Eternity, and have replace Liliana with Rise from the Grave since she's rotating.

I think you'll want Connive // Concoct in that slot.
