To be pushed this have to have Hexproof Lol and probably any graveyard. But Dimir Fans are use to poor treatment so from that prospective I guess it is pushed.
As it is now it probably dies before its next turn. Dies to basically any modern removal...Bolt...Path....Push
Do NOT copy Death's Shadow unless you are under 13 life...
Also, I love that you can do this at instant speed; Swing with Lavaz with Tetsuko out, after blocks turn them into Phage.
Im not sure if I am misunderstanding the card or not. But Lazav, the Multifarious, keeps the name Lazav, the Multifarious and Death's Shadow text names Death's Shadow and not something like "this creature". So does the -X/-X even apply?

All cards that refer to their own name mean "this creature", unless they explicitly say "a card named <blah>".

Yes. Whenever a card refers to itself, it actually means "This card". So if you copy Death's Shadow, it will essentially say "Lavaz gets -X/-X ..."
However, Nyxathid should be fine because, even though it will technically be getting the -X/-X debuff, there was no player chosen (no ETB trigger to do so), X will be 0.
so i thought he is the one that can go undercover in other guilds... so shouldnt he be able to target opponents graveyards too ?
dont get me wrong, i like the card for its ability, but i think its a little flavor fail
Last time we saw Lazav he only copied out of opponent's graveyards. This was more on point thematically but it meant you couldn't build a strategy of your own.
Except milling them out and hoping you hit something dumb like Platinum Emperion. Multifarious is a lot more Jenny Friendly in its design, even if Vorthos takes a hit.
This doesn't even have the ole 'Only when you could cast a sorcery' rider. You can become something with vigilance, attack, then switch to something without vigilance but now happily attacking untapped. You can switch to something with hexproof in response to removal.
Might be a solid 1-2 of in Soulflayer modern? If you can't get the actual Flayer out, at least Lazav can imitate for awhile and grab what's needed.

I guess that's why there are no creatures played in all of Modern that don't die to those. /sarcasm.

You don't call "dying to removal" if the removal is more expensive in resources than the creature. If you have to spend BG (Abrupt Decay), or W + basic land (PtE) to remove a 1G, that is not "dying to removal". Strictly speaking Goyf dies to removal, but actually your removal is dying to Goyf.
1 mana turn Lazav into Asp and use asp ability to grant infect.
0 mana to turn into thopter to fly over blockers
1 mana to turn into Dreadnaught so you have a 12/12 infecter.

I can’t believe none of you guys are saying phage since it’s player deathtouch and you turn him into a unblockable then phage after blockers are declared 9 mana needed though

At first I was a little disappointed that he doesn't copy out of your opponents' graveyards. Then I read the card two more times and realized that he can clone at instant speed. That's phenomenal and possibly the coolest graveyard toolboxing I've ever seen.

He also can copy as soon as he comes in, no tapping needed.

Just, wow. A 1/3 for two mana that can do that? I mean, it can't copy ETB/morph triggers, and it's stuck on the day side of transform cards, but that's okay.

Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!
Going to have to disagree with the majority here, this is a terrible card.
It essentially has the same ability as The Scarab God, but redesigned for a 2 CMC shell. As a result, in a direct comparison new Lazav does not increase your board presence (The Scarab God produces tokens), has a scaling mana cost for the ability instead of a fixed mana cost, does not trigger ETBs, does not interact with your opponents GYs, does not cheat Commander tax, and does not have repeated lifegain/scry.
Do I expect a 2 CMC to compare to a 5 CMC? Of course not, but a direct comparison of just the GY ability shows just how inferior Lazav's ability is in comparison, a lot more inferior than a normal comparison between abilities on a 2 CMC and 5 CMC creature. IMO this has been massively scaled back, and I'm sad to say that Brawl is probably to blame.
If you're paying mana into Lazav's ability, that is mana that is not being used to increase your board presence, increase your card advantage, or influence the game state in almost any way. It's as if you've just swapped Lazav with a creature in your GY, and spent a lot of mana to do it. There are way more efficient ways to achieve the same thing.

As a matter of fact if you turn him into a unblockable and have 9 mana open you can easily take someone out
Oh I wonder what happens when you target the old lazav with this.
