MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
Exactly...everything has been downhill. It makes ZERO sense to "overpower" "sooome" creatures and cards, but not others. Maybe if everything was on the same power level, it would make for a more diverse and interesting format, that MIGHT actually bring in more players back to the game!

It's not better or worse, it's different. The tokens of the new card are bigger and have vigilance and the first ability is way cheaper than the first guildmage. Maybe the first guildmage by average will win you more limited games, but the new guildmage isn't bad.
Just last return we could make a 3/3 for the same amount of mana without having to tap the creature, then make more of the same for 4 mana as long as the token was still there. Granted, it was more color-intensive, but this is the set with plenty of CCCC costs apparently...
Is it me, or this time around guildmage design suck? See, original ones had hybrid manacost (X/Y)(X/Y) and their abilities each required only one color (either X or Y), and it made sense, because you could play them even in the deck with only one corresponding color. In RTR their manacost included two colors, as their ablilites' cost did. Which also made sense, because if you already paid XY for the creature, you are probably able to pay XY for the ability. These new ones have multicolored cost, but their abilities require only single color and are weaker (compare Conclave Guildmage, which makes 2/2 tokens for 6 mana, with Vitu-Ghazi Guildmage, which for essentially the same cost makes 3/3s (yes, I know, vigilance, but I'd rather trade it for +1 p/t). Making abilities cost only single color would maybe be justifiable if you could use them multiple times in a turn, but the tap requirement doesn't allow that! I am not complaining that the new guildmages are bad cards, they will be used in limited, as they always were. It's just that their design is... less explainable, I would say.

Hmm, the hybrid costs obviously were much better, and 6 mana and tapping isn't happening in any format, except limited.
I mean they showed us the goods, and now they've taken them away. Nobody like their toys taken away from them.
Requiring them to tap AND also overcosting the abilities on top of that... I would have been less sad if there wasn't a new cycle, instead of such a disappointing one. Also, why no saprolings? The tribal in Dominaria made me hopeful we would get a little more support from Golgari and Selesnya like in the previous two Ravnicas, but instead we got Insect and Soldiers as the 1/1 tokens for the set.
A guildmage from a token-focused guild granting trample of all things is pretty weird. But I guess it helps with the big mana convoke creatures like Arboretum Elemental.
Vitu-Ghazi Guildmage was better, but they can't all be hits. And I swear people are overreacting about the fact that you have to tap these. Old Guildmage abilities were repeatable, but how often did you really spend 10 mana to make a Centaur token + populate or 8 mana to make two Saprolings/anthem your team twice in the same turn?
And it's a good placce for it. Elf Knights very well represent wolfriders like Tolsimir Wolfblood (despite him being a Warrior) and the creature types represent the colors green and white coming together - with vigilance being the shared keyword ability. Plus the Knight type actually is mechanically relevant from Dominaria and the Core Set.
Everything about that token is neat. Let's focus on the token over the card. There's much more positive to be said about it - I bet it even has cool artwork.

Planar Chaos was not a mistake neither was it random. You might want to look at it again.

I wonder if there some agenda behind Elf Knigts. Sure, knight tribal is a thing with all Dominaria stuff, but the only card that has synergy with elves in Standard is Marwyn. More to come in upcoming sets? Next two sets are Ravnica too so it seems unlikely.

requiring tapping also means they cant be activated the turn they come into play; meaning their potential as a lategame topdeck goes down quite a bit.

Most likely answer- the token is green and white, elf is a green creature type and knite is a white creature type. In the same way vigilance is an ability found in green and white and both colors get efficient 2/2s often.
I'm not sure if this is really the worst of all three Selesnya GMs. Outside of Limited (where this card is worse than Vitu-Ghazi, but still very much playable), this card will most likely see play in commander, if at all. In a token deck, you'd play Selesnya Guildmage pretty much only for the token generation; the anthem ability won't often be relevant. And there already are other cards (like Jade Mage) that generate tokens more efficiently. Meanwhile, Conclave Guildmage's first ability can help pumped up token hordes (Beastmaster Ascension, Cathar's Crusade) and big creatures with convoke get through. His token-producing capabilities are weaker than Vitu-Gazi Guildmage, but as long as you run Conclave GM as an evasiom enabler with the added benefit of token production, it doesn't seem all too shabby.

I think we've already seen the AW. They showed a picture of a wolf rider at PAX with token "aspect ratio". It looled pretty cool!
The past two iterations of the G/W Guildmage were a bit OP relative to the other guilds, so it makes sense that this one is a bit scaled back. I wouldn't read too much into this as a sign of the overall power of this cycle, especially considering the other two guildmages we've seen are arguably better than past versions.
Geez, people, calm down. I said "if at all". Yes, this card may very well be unplayable outside of Limited and I'm not trying to deny that. That being said, I've recently been trying to look at things in a positive light, even if that means overvaluing cards and making myself look "dumb" in the process from time to time. Of course you're free to critisize cards and and my responses to them, but personally I'm just sick of all the negativity during spoiler season.

Some were maybe a little too good.
