When Dream Eater enters the battlefield, surveil 4. When you do, you may return target nonland permanent an opponent controls to its owner's hand.

Sure, there is a chance of spending $4 on a booster and getting the Mythic Rare $30 super card. There is also a chance of surviving putting your tongue in a light socket.
That has to be one of the cooler creature type combinations in recent memory. Card seems good! Only 3 toughness, but that's bearable as it has an ETB effect.
I wonder if this is the card with the highest Surveil number. There's always a chance for Surveil X.
Great card, awful design. I mean, I already expected the Theros School of Card Design with Surveil Commons/Uncommons, but a Mythic that does absolutely nothing to showcase the mechanic? Bleh.
Either way, art + type line is cool, and it's obviously a powerful card... just not a very exciting one.
Why is bouncing something contingent on surveiling? Shouldn't it just be "Suveil 4, then bounce the thing"?
This way, you Surveil 4, then you decide what to bounce. As you worded it, you would have to choose your target when the ability goes on the stack, before you actually get to Surveil.
Card is awesome. Never expected a Sphinx to be so Dimir. I know 3 toughness isn't great but the abilities are really good.
Card is okay, but doesn't feel incredibly Mythic to me. But the tempo swings could be real with this card... Bounce an attacker, deal 4 damage to another attacker, dig 4 deep for answers... Or bounce a blocker, add 4 flying power to the board, look for reach or more threats...
Sounds like an extremely universal card in its applications!
6 mana is too much. 3 toughness is too small. Artwork is too cool.
I mean you're getting your mana's worth at least...
- I'd say "Surveil 4" at instant speed is worth around 1.5-2 mana.
- "return target nonland permanent" at instant speed is worth 1.5-2 mana.
- A 4/3 Flying Flash would normally go for 4-5 mana.
So being generous, you'd expect to pay 7 for this, but instead you get all three of these things stapled together for the low, low price of six mana!
I don't know if it'll do much in any format outside Standard, of course, since 3 toughness means even with instant board impact it dies to every removal spell under the sun and in Standard it can replace Torrential Gearhulk and come in under Nezahal, while in Modern it is still facing off against Fatcaster Robot. But it is a good rate for all the effects you get.

Dunharrow makes a good point about knowing what cards you looked at before deciding what to bounce. Potentially more importantly though is that the current wording allows this to be played on an empty board and still getting to Surveil. I know it is kind of unlikely because of the high mana cost, but if the wording were "Surveil 4, then bounce target" the trigger wouldn't even make it to the stack if the opponent didn't have anything to target. This was you get to Surveil no matter what the opponent has (or doesn't have). Also worth noting is that this way the target cannot be removed in response to prevent the player from Surveiling.
As the card itself, it seems like it has some reasonable applications and I can see it being decent. I don't play limited much (though I will likely do the pre-release) but this does seem like it could be good there. End of opponent's turn, flash this in, bounce their big dude, surveil to get another card, and swing in with a 4 power flyer. I don't think it is a powerhouse by any means, but there are certainly applications for its ability.
How long before someone has this altered with a Pokemon using the move of the same name?
Honestly, I'm not too impressed by this for constructed purposes (seems way too frail and the effect isn't that huge even with the surprise factor), but the whole package would probably be a nightmare in Limited (effectively surprise blocker with bounce and card sifting), won't be surprised if this was one of those "janky rares" pushed to Mythic for Limited purposes.

It's Mythic. Mythics are not really made with limited in mind.
Not sure how constructed playable it is. If there is any good reanimation it could be amazing. If the graveyard synergies are good, this could be a good top-end card.

Oh....good call. I understand that it may not have been built with limited in mind; just that it could be used there. I also thought it was rare, not mythic. So, my "limited" comment doesn't really apply
