With this (probably) the last mono green card in the set, can we do a number crunch to guess how much card are in the set of each color?
I wouldn't expect this to be the last one. Past Ravnica plane sets had 6 monogreen cards that would have been alphabetically later than this. Things that start with "Wasteland", "Wild", "Worldspine", or "Wurm" would all come later.
I feel it likely there's one later one. #150. Making an even 30 per color.
The Saruli seems to be some kind of wildlife reserve (Saruli Gatekeepers). Looking forward to the map that'll come with the D&D thing, it'll be interesting to see how the plane looks from above and where all these parts of the city we've heard and read about are located in relation to each other (inb4 it's just the 10th district).
So we have entire herds of exotic animals in a city-plane?
Sometimes i wonder what get inside creatives' minds.
Agree.
You know, if you think about it it makes no sense for Ravnica to be a city-plane.
I had a impossible time selling Ravnica as a setting for D&D people... The place is suppose to cover the whole planet but the Gruul are wild barbarians. The Boros is a standing army that never expect to go to war because Ravnica is the sole political unit in the world. There's a bunch of giant wurms running around while usually cities would not allow for even medium animals like wolves to survive.
Explaining Ravnica to other people is essentially "It's a city-world but don't worry it has everything non-city places have like forests, savages and giant monsters".

1) Has ravnica been described as a planet? genuine question, I've always thought of it as a flat plane.
2) Boros are police, and ravnica is far from a cohesive political unit.
3) Ravnica is far from a usual city, and wolves (or bigger creatures) might be more prevalent in a city with a militant druid faction.

Referring to the parts I put in bold. Yep, agreed on those.
Maybe the Selesnya has something similar to a wildlife reserve in their territories.
And also interested in the vast underground seas or ocean discovered by the Simic.
Ravnica is amazing, I have no problems with WoTC coming back here every now and then.

even mundane human cities in real life have pretty diverse settings, including parks and nature reserves.
imagine if ravnica was a planet 2 or even 3 times the size of earth (i have no idea if ravnica is this big), then consider a city covering the entirety of it. once you think on that scale it isnt hard to imagine such a motley collection of strange stuff to be going on. guild sectors could be the size of countries, or even continents. then add building upwards or underground.

"It's a city-world but don't worry it has everything non-city places have like forests, savages and giant monsters".
That's the cool thing about it though. It's the "usual stuff" viewed through a different lens. The barbarians here don't live in the literal mountains, they squat among rubble of huge swathes of ruined parts of the city. The forests are the results of massive nature reclamation/preservation projects, carried out by different guilds in different fashions (mostly Selesnya and Simic, but to a certain extent also Gruul and Golgari). The equivalent of the usual swamps is the undercity, where all the waste and refuse gathers etc. It's not just "houses everywhere". Also, as others have already said, Ravnica as a whole is not the only political unit - with the guilds and the gateless, there are at least eleven.
Why is this an antelope? The okapi is most closely related to the giraffe...
Right, the card itself. Not terribly exciting, but a 3/2 vigilance for 3 should be good enough in Limited. As for the flavor text, I wonder how much more in-depth we'll get with regards to the Saruli.

Yeah, this is something I like about Ravnica. It's not like Coruscant or something like that, in that it's just top to bottom buildings and skyscrapers. There is greenspace and areas of varying population density, like an actual city.
There are more Tigers in Texas than there are in the wild.
I doubt that more than 50% of Texas is made of building.
And i doubt that there are packs of tigers free to roam.
Not mentioning the fact the ravnica is supposed to be slavic-ish, so the weather is kinda chilly.
It will be interesting to see how they built the world for the D&D manual. first ravnica did a great job imho.
rtr failed a little with a lot of unexplained animals... and this set is looking the same right now
As others have said there are multiple reasons for normal and exotic animals to be on Ravnica:
- They are hidden in the undercity (most of the giant insects and wurms, with emergences to the surface probably being akin to natural catastrophes for the ravnican people).
- They are used by the guilds (dragons by Izzet, insects by Golgari, wurms by Gruul and Selesneya)
- They occupy parks and huge nature reserves.
- They roam and expand the ruined parts of the city (it has been established all the way back in City of Guilds that the Gruul, anti-city as they are, use wurm callers to create bigger spaces in which they can thrive for example).
- Some, like the giant floating animals (forgotten their names) are also used for public transportation.
None of the above take away from the point of a planet-spanning city. It just makes it less sterile in a sense than for example Trantor or Coruscant.

1) It could be a flat planet lol
2) I thought the Azorius were the police, with all it's detention spheres, restraining spells and arrester minions and such. The boros is a legion and has war leaders, it's spells are big flashy fireballs and nukes. They don't make much sense either as police or army.
About political unit, the whole premise of the guildpact is that each guild will play some role in the city administration. Even through they conspire against each other and even openly fight, I always thought these were more akin to internal conflict. If Ravnica isn't a political unit then calling it as a city-plane is wrong, which was my point.
3) Fair point but I still have a hard time accepting something like worldspine wurm living in a big city.

Both Boros and Azorius contribute to the police force. Boros contributed more to the S.W.A.T. and riot police aspects (though they have also investigators, but Azorius seem to have an investigative wing as well - there are probably a lot of issues of Azorius pulling jurisdiction over Boros). I always imagined that Boros were originally an army against an outside threat and grew into an internal police force as the city grew to contain all major population centers that matter and "external threat" started to cease being a viable concept and all terrorism became domestic - but you don't throw away your terrorism experts just because of that. In that sense the terms that you would associate with an army to encouner external threats never gave up the historic terms "legion" and "war leader" and it's just that the definition of "war" has changed in the transformation to a city plane to include "repression of undesirables also within city limts, because there is nothing not within city limits".
I think the story about Vraska's origin shows well how the Boros act with military deadly force against rioters, because Ravnica is not utopian, quite possible the opposite and even if the government of ravnica is presented as the "sole political unit", I suppose people like Stormscale Anarch disagree with this commonly held worldview.
There are probably people studying Ravnican history in-universe and consider the Eighth District of Ravnica to not be conform with plane-wide laws and claim to be the true government of the occupied territories of the ancient nation of Viashi. They might or might not be smoking Erstwhile spores while discussing their quest for autonomy.
And strictly speaking we know of the Ravnican (City of Ravnica) government encountering a forgotten civilization on their own plane recently which might have needed to be encountered as an external threat if they hadn't decided to integrate (mostly into the Simic, taking them over actually): The Merfolk of the misplaced ocean beneath the city. What were they before they joined the city?
Ravnica is not monolithic. Some flavor sources even talk about the edges or borders of the city, so "City Plane" might be less absolute than the name implies. But if I can see the sky scrypers from any spot I'm standing even if I am not technically standing on an artificial building myself, I'd still call the world a city plane.
