IMHO if they were going to do this, they wouldn't have printed Opt in sets that will overlap with this in Standard for a year. I don't think they want standard decks running 8 U-trips. I'd find this a lot more plausible if they had put Opt in Kaladesh-Amonkhet year, left it out of Ixalan-Dominaria-M19 year, and then had SurveilOpt printed right as Classic Opt was rotating out.
Nothing too exciting yet. Oh well, it's first day of previews. I hope that's not average power level of jump-start, because these are quite bad.
Status // Statue is pretty good, but I've seen some people saying "it'll lead to absolute blowouts". Not really, since you can only cast one half. Both 1 mana deathtouch pump and universal removal are very good in limited, and it's auto-include in any Golgari limited deck, but I think some people overestimate it.
Okay, earlier I only saw the first post and was thinking that I like Barging Sergeant because his name almost rhymes if you squint and don't know how to pronounce words very well, and that Status // Statue was pretty good since both halves are decently priced.
Then I saw the second post and bust out laughing at Radical Idea. That art is so beautifully dumb. (Also Direct Current is kind of a letdown like every repeatable burn spell they've printed lately but whatever)
Well, the murmuring mystic is a true build-around-me uncommon. That will be fun in draft, as you repeatedly draw two off some divination, get a flying bird token and then get a bird and a flying table from your rage quitting opponent.

An Opt variant with surveil would likely have to cost more than one mana. Surveil provides much more of an advantage than scry does.

There's an amazing card in the Selesnya video that makes 1/1 blue bird tokens every time you cast an instant or sorcery. 3U for a 1/5, I think.
EDIT: Added image.
This is awful. We have Young Pyromancer and monastery mentor and also the 4 mana 2/2 merfolk that makes 2/2 flying drakes for the same trigger.
Not in Standard we don't. If UR Wizards becomes a thing--which is debatable, but not right now--this could help protect against more aggressive decks by providing chump-blockers. No other similar effect exists in Standard at this time (The Locust God and Nest of Scarabs come close but you probably won't see those outside Commander or Brawl). Guttersnipe would probably be better, but I guess we'll just have to see.

And they all die to Shock. A 1/5 creature serves a substantially different purpose than a 2/1 creature.
Also not really fair to compare the upper 2% of creatures available in Modern, to any newly printed set's cards when the new sets' cards are most likely aimed at limited play with an outside shot at standard and brawl. The overwhelming majority of things printed to new sets are leagues below Pyromancer and Mentor. If that's your measuring stick of expectation on any new card...

I do like the split cards in that they encourage splashing one of the colors. E.g., a Dimir deck could grab Status // Statue purely for the hybrid side (Status), but if it gets its splashed forest (or, heck, a Golgari Guildgate), then it seriously upgrades. Very interesting design.
If there's a 2/1 with Haste and Mentor, that bird is going to be going places.
I think Radical Idea is much different than Think Twice. Think is real card advantage while Idea is only filtering. I would compare Idea to Opt more than I would compare it to Think.
Opt and Idea are both card neutral, instant speed, and "dig" 2 deep. Opt does all this for U, while Idea does the same for 2UU. Idea's advantage is that it puts more in your yard, will always dig 2, and will always filter more. Opt may just take the top scry digging and filtering less, but if you take the top card didn't you come out ahead? And if you don't take the top card, don't you dig/filter just as much? All for 2U less.
I guess the only reason I can see to take Idea over Opt is if you value the graveyard more or really like to pitch dead cards. Both are valid, in my opinion. Anyone seeing this comparison differently?

Glad to see that the Jump Start cards are all over costed garbage played way too safe; as predicted. I'm almost surprised the Think Twice variant isn't a sorcery speed so that it's completely outclassed by it's predecessor.
The nice thing about the bird token maker is that his huge butt means he can act like a wall in limited too, while also hopefully supplying you a stream of evasive attackers if you run enough instants/sorcery spell. Might be worth trying to make spells an archtype in limited after all.
The direct damage card seems pretty garbage. I mean the sorcery speed and cost are super prohibitive. It doesn't even make the cut in RDW even with the jump start ability.

...or it's a Think Twice that swaps one generic mana in its flashback cost for a discard.

Yeah, this card is so innocent that it flew under people's radar,
but it's arguably the strongest card here.
