Also, this is making me think the transformers pack that happened was a beta for this. I'm just glad I'm playing other games and am not stuck with MtG, because this is the worst rip off I've seen since the attempts of GW to raise their already expensive model prices.
You say that as if this wont 1, sell out, and 2, command massive numbers on the secondary market?
Unless they overprint it like crazy.
Oh, it will sell out. Personal distaste aside, I listed the issues earlier in a prior post on page six. The big problem is that it is going to sell out because wizards isn't very good at making websites and people have gamed companies like nintendo with their SNES Mini. There are bot programs that can completely clean out an inventory even with a 2 per person limit.
Then there is the question of finding out if people really want FTV Foil walkers and a bunch of standard booster packs for 250 dollars, which I think is pretty steep even with the walkers being included. I'm not so sure this is built correctly to address the audience that wants it. This should be a collectors item, but it's being sold as a masters set type of booster box for luxury draft. Imagine how much better this would sell if it had a Diorama of one of the established ravnica guild locations at 20mm scale, such as Duskmantle or Vitu Ghazi, and included the walkers in a nice organized display across the top with a magnetic closure: That would be the kind of box I would sell at 250 dollars.

2. (War of the Spark): Guys, I know what we need! We need a cycle of really idiotic flavor text victory cards! Jace's Triumph...

Years ago, people would have laughed/scoffed at an amateur's attempt to foil it that manner. Today, the same amateurs are hired to print this crap? C'mon now this process looks worse than FTV IMO...

It's not that they're terrible at making websites when they're not making as much money when online sellers on eBay and Amazon are profiting off of this more than themselves when they could add a small online sales tax that goes straight to Wizards of the Coast / Hasbro themselves while the online seller on eBay / Amazon is still making money off of their product.
An online sales tax would of course create a slippery slope of corporate greed unless the LGS takes advantage of e-commerce sales themselves which is what they've been doing to an extent. The online sales tax issue is still controversial in itself due to the difference in state and local taxes nationwide let alone the threat of burying the national market under a landslide of tax paperwork.

Of course secondary market sharks will buy all of them, they buy Didgeridoos. And in a slightly possitive turn of events, all that means is those people will not be as solvent if WotC releases an actually attractive product in december.
I mean, this mostly feels like a product people will get hyped for, then it will rot on ebay at 300+ per booster box.

1) Lack of added value. It has no specialty swag outside of the cards themselves that people can put on their shelves like books, models, night vision goggles, Collector pins, etc. Imagine if they had this set, but also each of the boxes has a 20mm scale reproduction of an iconic landmark or structure belonging to each guild. Duskmantle, Vitu Ghazi, etc. And I mean diorama quality production.
I think this is something WotC just does not understand. They tried to copy Pokemon with their Christmas product last year but instead of offering useful/popular/playable cards with variant art, they gave use foil lands with variant art...?
WotC does not really understand how to make an eye catching and exciting premium product. This new Planeswalker box just reinforces that. There is nothing of value in the box except 8 variant planeswalkers. Sure the 24 packs are nice but they are hardly interesting.

To be fair, the first time they did it they did it blind, where as this time I think they missed the D&D cross over potential with the Ravnica campaign book. Having prop structures, even just rooms themed after the major ravnica districts, would have made this far more attractive and justified the price. They are putting way too much value on this selling a pack cracking experience, which is dishonest by a fault as the packs that are marked supposedly have one of each of the walkers in them.
This is worse than a masters set like masters 25 or iconic, and they are deliberately attempting to stick a price to prevent the product from collapsing in value. Oh well, not our problem who gets stuck with the boxes. At least Hasbro gets to reap the whirlwind this time instead of distributors.

So DOMINARIA Doesnt get Masterpieces but RAVNICA does? SMFH.
Are these standard playable? Cause that would mean Teferi would be Standard Playable for like 2+ YEARS.
Yeah, shouldn’t Dominaria have this?
Why? The planeswalker card type wasn't featured on a set, um, set on Dominaria until, um, Dominaria. Dominaria should have a masterpiece set, but not one about planeswalkers. The broader legendary supertype would fit Dominaria better. Though Bolas, Ugin, Liliana, Jaya, Teferi, Venser, and Lord Windgrace are all native to Dominaria, so there's that. (By the same token, Ral, Vraska, and Domri are all native to Ravnica, and it is Jace's adopted home and the Gatewatch's headquarters.)
I like the lack of a card frame. The real problem with the Amonkhet frame was legibility, such as a certain lecherous goddess.
And no, masterpiece sets aren't Standard-legal. Could you imagine having some of the cards printed in masterpiece sets in Standard or Modern?

Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!
Is there a way a Mod can change the title of this thread? It is causing some confusion.
[GRN] Planeswalker Masterpieces is not correct, it should be something more like.....
[MED] Hasbro Alt Art Planeswalkers or [MED] Promo Masterpieces of Planeswalkers
Just for clarification purposes GRN should not be in the title
I reported the thread - hopefully someone changes it. It kind of is related to GRN though because it is branded GRN and has GRN boosters in it - but yes, for clarity I'd rather it be tagged MED (for Media - I presume?)
Why would you call it media? Are these promo cards released with a video game or novel? I don't think so. But I assume it's only you thinking of "Media". Considering the full title is Guilds of Ravnica Mythic Edition (or semi-full title, because the full title probably is "Magic the Gathering Guilds of Ravnica Mythic Edition" or something) my guess is, that MED is meant to be "Mythic Edition". But arguably that's still as much part of Guilds of Ravnica as e. g. the Guilds of Ravnica Planeswalker Decks (if they exist, because the product page doesn't mention them) - and hence entirely deserving of being tagged with "[GRN]" - though I would suggest replacing "Masterpieces" with "Mythic Edition" (while keeping GRN - after all it is announced on the GRN-themed announcement page and GRN is in the name) - the official announcement of this product does nothing to indicate any connection to Masterpiece-series. It's clearly "something new" they are trying, so the thread title is misleading to the detriment of both WotC and forum-visitors.

Planar Chaos was not a mistake neither was it random. You might want to look at it again.
[thread=239793][Game] Level Up - Creature[/thread]
Short video on wizards' twitter, showing the shiny cards.
It looks like FTV foiling, which is a super huge bummer. You could see the slight bend in the card as the person twirled it around.
Unfortunate, this makes them a little less desirable.
Don't think it's the FTV foiling. It looks like the Kaladesh Inventions foiling process.

The cards themselves say "Masterpiece" on the bottom of them. Wizards is clearly considering these to be part of the Masterpiece series so having "Masterpiece" in the title is still applicable.
Booster box is $100 or so, right? So that's 8 planeswalkers spread over $150, or about $18.75 per planeswalker.
Actual prices on TCGplayer "market value":
Elspeth, Knight-Errant: $15.50
Teferi, Hero of Dominaria: $44.50
Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker: $4.50
Daretti, Ingenious Iconoclast: $9.00
Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas: $20.00
Liliana, the Last Hope: $34.50
Ral, Izzet Viceroy: ?
Plus one more unknown
Total: $128.00
So Ral and the other unknown planeswalker would only need to total $22 to make it break even. This ignores that these are special versions that are likely worth more than the normal versions.

So it seems like a financially good deal to me.
You can't really say that it's a good value by basing it off of the individual costs of the planeswalker cards and then adding them up. First off, these alternate art walkers look like something torn out of a deviant art page. Liliana's looks particularly atrocious and I got no idea what the heck Tezzeret is doing in his artwork with that extreme foreshortening and angle. The best of the lot is probably Elspeth and if I were going to take a guess, that one is the one people are going to be buying the most if these ever get broken open.
Also, as I said before the booster packs are basically zero value to most people who would even pick this up. Plus, because it can only be purchased online at Hasbro's website many people are going to have to pay sales tax, which puts this product at a price of 280 dollars roughly for anyone buying and it is region locked. Masters boxes people could at least skirt around the sales tax and regional issues.
Yeesh, to think we are at the point where the companies internal risk assessment actually makes this sound like a good idea for making back profits lost last year from the masters catastrophe. On the upside, there is at least some level of consumer protection going with this set price strategy. The price may not drop like with masters 25 and iconic, but it wont go up either. It also cuts out risk for the distributors who got stuck having to do a fire sale on Iconic and Masters 25. Also, if they do a fairly small run of these, than there likely isn't even going to be a problem because there's always at least a handful of people that are into buying these things.
Always unfortunate to be reminded that pretty much the dirty little secret of all big businesses is that everything is a cash grab, though.

That's the painful part about this. If the risk assessment says that they will still make more money doing this even with some of the player base being upset, they'll do it anyway. They know that people will buy them out and try to resell them for scalper prices, and once they have the money it is no longer their problem.

Thank you for posting the clear image of the cards!
Elspeth looks stunning. I love the Greek hero behind her, the mask and the torches from Rescue from the Underworld. Now we have another Theros themed Elspeth! Beautiful art.
Ral's art on this promo is excellent. I love both this promo and his standard card art. They both looks great!
I'm happy they did this unique take on planeswalkers. The alternate arts alone are cool.
No Green because they probably don't want to spoil the new Vraska yet.
True enough although I don't really have a problem with them selling Premium Products like this personally.
What I don't get looking at these Price Points is why these Walkers.
Vraska and Ral Zarek fine its a Ravnica Set. They got New Cards...granted you think they would have pushed Ral maybe they pushed Vraska.
Lili, Tezz and Teferi no complaints there as relevant in Modern and they are story relevant on Ravnica.
Bolas, relevant to Ravnica.
Elspeth is the odd girl out though not super valuable but the art is great she is my favorite Neo Walker. Daretti is the Odd man out.
So the 'masterpiece' series has been revealed... which means that the poster (collage of planeswalkers) will have future 'planeswalker masterpiece' art spoilt already?
Being two big sets (One huge block) and 8 planeswalkers for this Guilds of Ravnica, can we deduce that the next set: Ravnica Allegiance will have another 8 more walkers?
Hopefully the last unkown is big Karn. That would help to jack up the value a bit
Nah. Most likely Vraska. We got 2 artworks for her, the booster pack one holding that pet bug which will be the in set one and the insane Magali Villeneuve art that's most likely the masterpiece one.
There was a new Karn, Tamiyo and Jace artwork from that planeswalker poster revealed a while ago, so they might end up as masterpieces for the next set. But I have my doubts for one reason. All other masterpiece series, the card numbers carried over to the second set, expeditions are XX/45, inventions and invocations are XX/54 but these are only X/8.
We have two Ravnica Sets. What doesn't make sense is Karn quite frankly cannot see why he get another walker card in Ravnica. Unless its Planeswalker Decks.
