I think this thread is getting close to complaining about the phrase that shall not be named.
I concur that this artwork was probably not commissioned for this card and two better artworks could have been utilized. That said, I'd never be disappointed with a free Vampiric Tutor.

Protection from reason (Decadent_Creed can't be blocked, targeted, dealt damage, or enchanted by reason.)
You know you spent too long deciding which card to search for when even your card art is staring impatiently at you
While I do agree that the art doesn't feel very "tutor-y" (we have distinct classification for maps-in-art since ramping is serious business in the game), I'm more forgiving on the Vampire aspect - he has the Badge of the Legion of Dusk. Sure, he may not look the the typical good-looking Vampire of modern expectations, but he's dressed in the way that speaks similarly - he holds as much pride as any "good-looking" Vampire would as well.
I think we're so used to the card being associated with "darker" art that this one seems comedic in comparison, but I don't think it's as bad. At least it gives variety to people who prefer "lighter" art. I already have an EMA foil and I'm biased towards Raymond Swanland regardless, so I won't be getting this for sure, but it's still solid from my perspective (in fact I like it better than the original that if the EMA one didn't exist, I would be getting this instead).
On another note, it's pretty darn obvious this is leftover art... and perhaps even an entire leftover Masterpiece from the plans they scrapped from Ixalan. I wonder how this would have looked like in the Masterpiece (now-flip-land) frame.
On Nin: They have not ever released a Judge Foil of a Commander-First-Print Card with alternate art yet and while its true that can change anytime, I'm inclined to think they won't for quite the future to save costs since the foiling of a non-foil card is already regarded as a pimp factor, especially when it comes to Commander Cards.
Same. Call me easy but I feel like the card art is fine. Feels very Ixalan and hes tutoring up some lands or treasures with his knowledge and maps. There might not be blood and fangs like those who crave the obvious have come to expect, but it works just fine. And even if it is leftover artwork... I mean it fits, right? As for his uhh... sexualness... or whatever... I mean he's an old vampire guy. Maybe some people are into that. Maybe not. Why does it matter? I'm all for good artwork but I'm not going to nitpick. Some people are hard to please I guess.
Honestly, I don't mind the art at all. It's a different style from what we've seen in recent years, but compared to the late nineties Magic's art has become very homogenized. I'm personally reminded of Cruel Tutor, with the crazy eyes. This card doesn't as obviously depict a teacher type character, but it's still someone with information. And he's a vampire. Who will suck a little bit of your blood in return for that information.
As for Nin, I guess it's just a matter of giving a foil printing to a legendary creature that previously did not have one. The list of creatures that fit those criteria without being on the reserve list has grown shorter and shorter. It's not the most powerful or iconic creature to give this treatment, but it's still a creature that's part of the original Commander supplement.

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
Of course, the number one reason why people choose to play MtG. The hot characters.
I think the tutor looks fine. If there's something to be disappointed in, it's Nin. Not even a new AW.
Actually, artwork is in general. There have been numerous complaints about this one, from various angles tbh And there is a disparity with how men and women are portrayed in the game.

The disparity is now that men are frequently sexualized but women no longer are. Ixalan was full of shirtless, muscular men but the women were more covered up than a Mormon at church.

The artwork was one of the main reasons why I started playing, but Magic still has plenty of good artwork today. People just focus on the things they don't get. Also, regarding disparity: Not anymore, like others already said.
not sure why we're all attacking his sexifulness or lack there of when we should be attacking that he doesn't evoke anything relating to paying life, or tutoring anyone. he's just a vampire who looks like your pedophile used car salesman uncle.
a lot of criticism for nin too, which i also don't get. i've wanted her foil for awhile, and one of the big reasons i never built her for edh was because she isn't foil. would titania have been better? sure! but ill take what i can get.

Some of the pirate girls are pretty cute, however.
They do still use "breast plates", which are almost as ridiculous as chainmail bikini and nowhere near as fanservicy.

Sure, but they're still totally de-sexed, whereas the men in the same roles in the same setting are sexualized. It's obviously a conscious effort on WotC's part.
They do still use "breast plates", which are almost as ridiculous as chainmail bikini and nowhere near as fanservicy.
That's pretty rare now though. Women in card art are conspicuously un-sexy and pretty much defeminized. I suspect, like others, that this is a misguided effort at inclusion through virtue signaling.
Well, Daring Saboteurdoes have a cute butt, but this isn't the topic for discussing how Magic is handling sexualization of men and women in card art. Bottom line is, some people wish the vampire was a sexy sparkle boi with a whip, others are fine with the deranged middle-aged conquistador. No card is ever going to please everybody, so let's please move on, folks.

Der comin' fer our oversexualized female Magic art!
Virtue is a good thing. Inclusion isn't something to complain about. I don't know why so many random discussions always come back around to this.
I think inclusion is a great goal, I just think WotC is going about it the wrong way. It's not actually virtuous to just flip a double standard around, it's virtuous to end double standards. If they feel women in the card art are oversexualized(they aren't, but whatever) the answer isn't to defeminize them and then oversexualize the men. That's just objectively dumb. A little sexuality is fine, from both genders.
But the real question to ask on this subject is who does the new art direction actually attract to the game? Are formerly-disinterested female and LGBT consumers suddenly looking at MTG and saying "Wow, I love how the men are all buff and shirtless while the women are dressed like total prudes! This is what I was waiting for!"? It doesn't happen.
But back on topic, the vampire should have been gritting his fangs and doing some sort of blood ceremony with a bowl of blood and a dead body on the floor to actually evoke what the heck the card is.
Bottom line is, some people wish the vampire was a sexy sparkle boi with a whip, others are fine with the deranged middle-aged conquistador.
They printed Kazarov, sengir pureblood recently and no one complained.
The problem with this card's art are not with the attractiveness of the vampire.
Why everyone must always talk about LGBT, SJW and other things that don't matter because there are clearly other reasons.
This card doesn't suck because it doesn't appeal gays enough.
This card sucks because it's clearly out place, leftover art
Kazaov is also an ugly card, but it didn't have the trend Ixalan vampires showed, with their immortality/agelessness when blood feasting etc. It's also not an exclusive promo like this is supposed to be. This is the second judge promo (Merchant Scroll was the other) making men appear abhorrent. They don't always have to appear old, dirty, savage, angry/threatening etc.
But back on topic, the vampire should have been gritting his fangs and doing some sort of blood ceremony with a bowl of blood and a dead body on the floor to actually evoke what the heck the card is.

I don't know, the people saying this is leftover art just sound like they're trging to justify their dislike of the picture to me. It's clearly a vampire (if you know the first thing about Ixalan), and he's in a room you'd imagine a "tutor" to be in. In a sense, I appreciate that the artwork doesn't show a (sexy) vampire showing his fangs with lots of blood, because that would be the expected, stereotypical thing to depict. Of course, it could be a great artwork regardless. But a big draw of altrnative card art for me personally is the difference between the interpretation of the subject matter. This AW isn't something I'd put a frame on, but it offers another viewpoint on what a "Vampiric Tutor" can be. The recent promo planeswalker AWs are interesting too because they contrast the neowalkers with older characters of the past, but artwork-wise, they are a bit too over the top for me (I won't deny that they certainly are a lot more "frameable" than this Vampiric Tutor).
Bingo we have a winner. Now excuse me so I can ogle Vampire's Bite and Nin's rack.

It's a pity they seemed to have stopped doing Masterpieces altogether. Cradle of Vitality, Coastal Piracy, Exquisite Blood, Exploration, Imperiosaur, Door of Destinies, Well of Lost Dreams...those all would have been great Ixalan Masterpieces. Not to mention we would probably have gotten masterpieces of Jace, Vraska, Huatli, Admiral Beckett Brass, Gishath, Vona, Tishana, Angrath, Elenda, Kumena, Zacama, Azor, and The Immortal Sun.
