It's okay if you don't like the art for a given card. It's okay to say you don't like the art for a given card. It's not okay to ignore all context to justify your thorough lack of objectivity. I mean, there's some pretty obvious precedent for tutor artwork, but it seems as though everyone slept through class while their teacher was showing them how to cite evidence. Has anyone here even played this game for more than a year? A quick history lesson:
1) Beardo here is waxing contemplative over what appears to be a prune. He's gonna teach you about the local wildlife.
2) Sparkles?!? Enchantment! This happy, wizened gal just wants to show you how to party. Rowwwr.
3) Nothing screams 'arcane arts' like a couple of dense tomes and a single, menacing skull. The look in her eyes says 'I can show you things'; the look on her lips says 'somebody hand me that prune.'
Which brings us to contestant #4, our new friend from Ixalan. I get that some people like things on the nose - like, right on the nose, it seems - which must make anything more cerebral than a Deadpool film awfully hard to follow, but come on. It's pretty obvious that he's a pasty conquistador, which tells you everything you need to know about his outlook on [un]life. So what do all four cards have in common? Random duders surrounded by the tools of their trade, all the trappings that prove them to be subject matter experts in their respective fields. If the newest addition to this cycle doesn't qualify as a tutor, then I don't know what does. Pretending that you can't tell he's a vampire smacks of willful obstinance, but who am I to judge? I spend my free time gnawing through wood.
MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
The fact that he's clearly a vampire, but only if you know about ixalan seems like a contradddiction to me.
He coul just be a ale dude
Do you have a problem with Ixalan vampires in general? Because a lot of them justlooklikepaledudes. I stand by my statement: Not everything has to be super obvious. There's high-context art and low-context art and Wizards uses both. Other examples for relatively high-context art would be the BFZ version of Sylvan Scrying (there's no forest although the card has "sylvan" in its name) or Pernicious Deed (what's so pernicious about a women with an eyepatch opening some metal egg or whatever) - if you don't know the context, the art makes no sense.
Nah, he's in a room you'd imagine a cartographer to be in
[...]
Otherwise, does veteran explorer looks like a tutor to you? Because they are the same art, except one is a Jamuraan and the other is an Ixalan vampire
Actually, I could see both Veteran Explorer artworks as Worldly Tutor variants. You're right that recent "tutor" AWs tend to show two people or a hand taking something, while the older tutors were often just dudes holding something and looking at the viewer (a book, a gem or whatever Enlightened Tutor is holding in the old art). In a way, this new Vampiric Tutor goes against the trend. Maybe that's why it looks like they used leftover art to you. But I really don't think it's that hard to see him as a tutor. A tutor is a someone that teaches you things, and this guy has a lot of maps and can probably tell you where you need to go in order to get the "treasure" you're looking for.
Thank you Flossed Beaver. Also your last phrase made me chuckle x)
I do like the take on Vampiric Tutor myself. It's obvious he's a vampire from Ixalan, and since the beginning I've been a real fan of the Legion of Dusk vampire style. This pale figure, the groomed mustache, the pale eyes, they leave no doubt.
I like when they reinterpret old cards in different settings.

Man the Vamp Tutor art is trash, Nin seems like an odd choice for judge rewards, I think they should do cards that don't have foils for yet. Definitely a pass on either of these when they come through my shops...
