Well, now I know what to beg money for.
Obviously I can't get to San Diego to obtain these - what do you think they'll retail for after the fact? Or do you think they'll even be sold by the artist herself?
Wow, I never liked their previous promos, I thought the "black on black" thing was weird, and I didn't like the undead or the hieroglyphic ones, but these are great. Kinda wish they went with some different planeswalkers (I guess they always have to do the gatewatch?), but I can't complain too much.
I am saddened they chose Cunning Castaway for the Jace one (I know they choose the most current versions), because I love the art for the original as well... choosing between two amazing art cards is difficult. I hate having the competition between two equally compelling artworks. That said, the Gideon is absolutely gorgeous and I refused to play that version due to the drunken uncle art of the original. Now we have a handsome and gorgeous version with Serra themed stained glass art - COUNT ME IN!
I have no choice but to get the Jace for collection purposes, but I sorely wish it had been Jace, Unraveler of Secrets instead, which desperately needed better art. Even the SDCC promo version of that one is horrible, let alone the SOI version. Ah, well.
EDIT: What am I complaining about? I am a Commander player. My playgroup KNOWS I am obsessed with Jace and even house rules allows me to play Gifts Ungiven because Jace art. They'll no doubt let me play two Cunning Castaways, one of each art. YAY HOUSE RULES!
But what is with Gideon? Looks like he's on a heroin trip. Not sure what to think.

Benjamin Franklin: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
Martin Luther King Jr.: "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!? I want that Urza piece, but without Jace! What's going on? What is this supposed to mean! Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!?
Bro, what you don't want is the FTV foiling process they'll inevitably use to ruin the Terese Nielsen art. At least SS: Jace didn't have this awfulness. Wish they'd just be regular foils.
is paired with Serra. He strives to live his life according to the ideals of justice as she did. He will always be a fighter, though, and his face shows his doubts; did Serra do enough to directly face evil?

is next to Freyalise. Freyalise was ruthless in her defense of elvenkind and the natural world. Nissa used to feel the same way, but has come to realize interconnections are more valuable than ferocity, and that nurturing connections will preserve harmony.

stands in front of Nicol Bolas. She is a ruthless heroine, and though his influence looms large, her hands are alight with her own power. Liliana desires the control his overlapping figure refuses to secede.

stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the stained glass image of her mentor, Jaya Ballard. Theirs is easily the friendliest relationship, as they know each other personally. There's nothing but loving companionship in Chandra's stance in this piece.
Quote from Jace »
doesn't know much about Urza, but he know that he saved the world by manipulating thousands and sacrificing millions. To Jace, Urza is a cautionary tale. His back is facing Urza in this piece; an active rejection of all that Urza stood for.
These pieces aren't set in any one particular time and place. They're intended as a contrast between the past and the present, and how one affects the view of the other. The art director for this series was Mark Winters, and the artist Terese Nielsen.
They are put up for sale on Hasbro's website in limited quantities after SDCC a few weeks/month later
Provided they aren't too extortive in price, I'll be there with bells on to order one.
Depends what you consider extortive I guess. Last year's SDCC was $165.99 on the Hasbro website, plus $9.95 shipping, then tax on top of that. For me it was $186.50 delivered. Last year's set did come with 6 cards instead of 5, and also an exclusive poster of Bolas.
EDIT: just clicked the link in OP's post, says these are convention priced at $99. IIRC they're always a little more expensive online (not just shiping costs, but the base price itself), perhaps to make the Con-goers feel like they're getting a better deal. Just a guess, but I'd estimate these go for $110-$12o on Hasbro.com, plus shipping and tax on top of that.
Going to be at SDCC and I was holding off on deciding if I wanted to wait in line for the promo. No question that I'm willing to wait for this set. These are gorgeous.

By the way, having Serra represented on a card kinda confirms her for c18? I mean we can't have little kid holding this Gideon card and not being able to know who is depicted on the back except by exhuming old lore, right? Think about the kids!
If nothing else it looks like they have a "modern design" for her since none of the card art of her shows her in that outfit.

These look great. Now if we could get a few more artists who actually have an individual voice, we could get cool art like this all the time. But that's just me on my old soapbox again, touting the value of stylistic individuality over homogeneity. Nothing new.
Just posted a few minutes ago.
The Artwork, from Terese Nielsen, looks beautiful.
I never hope to see Urza and Jace on the same card again..
