Margaret Thatcher: “The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.”
Benjamin Franklin: "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
Martin Luther King Jr.: "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."
Ob Nixilis Reignited is a fair planeswalker with decent effects, but the problem with him is that he's very "boring". This criticism was leveled at the card long before now. His first two effects are just generic black things that just tick the checkboxes for what a "good" planeswalker card is supposed to do (give you advantage and protect itself), and those are what you'd expect to use him for 99% of the time. His ultimate is a bit more interesting though.
Interesting, thank you. I wasn't following things when that card came out, I never knew it was considered boring. I use it a bunch for budget utility and he serves that role well,I guess I just never thought about how exciting the card is. Hmm.
One thing to consider here is that planeswalker characters need to have their cards do things that differentiate themselves from the others, or they'll eventually look too similar to tell apart.
Liliana, outside of one card, does necromancer things. Sorin usually has drain effects or creates Vampire tokens, because he's a vampire. Vraska routinely kills things because she's a Gorgon assassin.
Ob Nixilis Reignited was so generic that it didn't really establish what his cards are supposed to do as a rule of thumb.
I dunno, isn't his thing that he hates everyone/everything and spite drives him more often than not? I kinda see how that feeds everything he does. He punishes people for asking him for help, he slaughters, and he hurts opponents for trying to gain the upper hand. And he enjoys that suffering. It's loose, sure, but I got a sense for who Ob was from that card when I didn't really know much about him as a character. All four of his cards have that theme running through them.
I won't argue that Reignited is an exciting card, but I think it does give a good sense of who he is even if none of the abilities are particularly iconic.

At least Tezzeret's back to looking cool again. I mean, I guess Tezzeret the Schemer looked kinda cool, but this is much closer to the cyborg Lobo we saw in Mirrodin Besieged. Although, his left arm here almost looks like he's wearing a T-shirt.
Interesting that Tezzeret's ultimate basically manifests any number of cards from your hand, only as 5/5 artifact creatures. Since Liliana's deck will already be black, assuming they aren't both just monocolored, maybe Tezzeret's will be UR?
MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
If anything other than black, red would be his secondary color, but I think monocolor is likely. (Although: U/B Tezz, W/B Lili, G/W Ajani, R/G Vivien, U/R Chandra?)

So. A face down card is not necessarily automatically a 2/2 any longer? I wonder if this is something they might want to pursue with other types of mechanics..
And can you unmorph morphs put into play this way? Based on the ruling for manifest, that you can unmorph manifested morp-cards as normal, I guess it's the same here.
I would assume they're 2/2 unless otherwise stated. Just as my island isn't a 0/0 creature until I awaken it. (And of course I put N +1/+1 counters on it, making it usually N/N, before next state-based action.)

Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!

The default state of a face-down permanent is a colorless, nameless 2/2 creature with no types or abilities. Effects that put permanents onto the battlefield can override those defaults. The fuzzier part is whether those overridden characteristics also apply to the permanent when it's turned face-up. I suggested it'd still be a 5/5 artifact creature when turned face-up, but actually that probably isn't the case since 707.8 states that the copiable values of the permanent would revert to the ones it would have while face-up.

Lapsed DCI Rules Advisor - Retired from playing but still hanging around
Since you have to announce targets when abilities go onto the stack, you can't actually get the creatures you destroy back with Liliana. Unless having it be two separate sentences overrules everything I thought I understand about Magic. But it kind of reads that way and I'm sure beginners will always play it like that.

If they didn't suck, they would get bought out quickly by enfranchised players, and thus would not be available for new players.
Unless they printed more so everyone could buy and appreciate them. I'm not talking about Lily of the Veil, JTMS or Karn level here either. Just something better than trash.
Realistically they could lop off 1 cmc off most all of these Planeswalker Deck walkers and it still wouldn't push them into the competitive players field of attention.

Indeed there are very few walkers that are 5+ that see any play. Especially if you ignore Ugin and Karn cause they might as well cost 4 or 5 in Tron.
Beyond that standard is 3 and 4 with a few exceptions at 5 or 6 with Teferi being the major one of late.
But honestly, I look at most cards and think yeah you could shave 1 or 2 cmc of this sucker if not for their casting cost then their active abilities cost.

Liliana, the Necromancer. Wow. I am agog. I would have NEVER thought of a name that good.
I'm going to try, though. Here's some of my suggestions for future Liliana versions:
Liliana, the Purple One.
Liliana, Zombie BFF.
Liliana 'I Didn't Read the Small Print' Vess.
Liliana 'My Brother is DEADDDDDDD' Vess.
Liliana, the Dark.
Liliana, the Spoopy.
Liliana, Hot Topic Salesperson.
