This makes me ask so many questions that the only thing I can really say to it is "why"?
I think my biggest question is why it's black. Like, I get that black can exile stuff, but...
A) White is traditionally a hoser color
B) White traditionally runs these one mana exile effects
C) White could also actually use the help to be more of a solid Modern color.
but maybe I'm thinking about it too much.
I can answer the B one at least: MaRo often says that while White is allowed to exile creatures, the 1 mana exile spells are considered a mistake, at least color pie wise. Black is supposed to be the best color in creature removal and it is quite hard to top Sword to Plowshares or Path to Exile. So at least in Standard they are avoiding making White removals better than Black removals
Even then, it feels so awkward to see it actually printed and to see it shoved so hard. getting rid of their creature for one mana isn't bad enough, you're also gaining a bunch of life too.
Then again, I have a feeling this won't actually stop Tron decks.
WOTC clearly hating on Tron lately with this and Damping Sphere. Maybe they're trying to ensure the mistake that was Oath of the Gatewatch can always be kept in check in Modern.
Who is the Demon? Guess we'll see him as a legendary in this set.
My first thought was Ob Nixilus. Reignited has the wings and the horns.
The quote makes sense for it to be Ob Nixilis, as well.
It really doesn't. Ob Nixilis wanted to destroy Zendikar, not conquer it, remember? He didn't fight the eldrazi, he fought the Gatewatch to try and sabotage their attempts to stop the eldrazi.
Not to mention that this guy looks nothing like Ob, even taking into account differences caused by different artists. This guy lacks Ob's distinctive chest markings. The horns are thin compared to Ob's thick horns, and their placement is all wrong. Ob Nixilis doesn't have visible ears, while this guy does. This demon isn't even the right size; I doubt even a spawn would be that small compared to Nixilis.
We know there were some nameless demons who fought the eldrazi; this guy is just another rando.

That wasn't always his intention. He was a conqueror of planes, and used the Chain Veil at one point, cursing him to his demon state. He went to Zendikar to try and cleanse the curse. The reason he wants to destroy Zendikar is because he was thwarted in his efforts to return his spark not once, but twice, by planeswalkers from Zendikar--Nissa and Nahiri. In the story he does torture some of the Gatewatch, and getting revenge could very well include torturing the people of Zendikar. Also, at times in the past some core sets have had cards with seemingly no currency in regards to their relevance to the current stories in the game. I'm not saying I have any idea who the card is supposed to represent, but I stand by my comment that the quote could very well come from Ob Nixilis. So I'll just disregard your contrarianism because you don't have any proof either, way, it's just conjecture the same as ours.
Well this has interesting implications about future standard threats. I doubt this was made just to hose Kaladesh, or any other preexisting threat in standard. Even if it was, why would they print hosers to sets that will rotate in 3 months anyway?.
It's possible this was designed just to address threats within M19 limited, but putting a limited answer at rare seems odd. It's also possible that this is an answer to something in Ixalan block or Dominaria, but neither of those has any real colorless threats (aside from maybe Karn, I guess, but you'd think his tokens would warrent some other form of hatecard than one-shot spot removal).
It seems more likely that this is aimed at something coming in future sets.
The only problem there is that we'll be on Ravnica for the next 3 sets, and then another core set, followed by another rotation. That means that the threats this card is designed for would likely have to be in one of these Ravnica sets, a world not known for its colorless cards.
We do know that the third Ravnica set doesn't focus on the Guilds, so it's possible it could have a colorless theme for some reason, but that strikes me as odd too.
Overall, this is just a bizarre card to see in this meta.
I agree with every word, but remember one thing they said on Announcement Day: "we're spending a third set on Ravnica as well—but we're not quite ready to talk about it yet. Just know that while the setting will be Ravnica, the focus will be on the culmination of the story and not the guilds". The potential threat could very well be in that set
But wait, there's more, use it to put a stop to illegal drag races, also gets rid of ravaging robots and more, grab 'em while they're hot, really.
Unspeakable cosmic abominations? Surely you don't mean the queen mama that can't be targeted by colored spells, right?
Just saying you could've hyperlinked almost any other colorless creature, but you had to link literally the one colorless creature this spell can't touch lol. Can't think of any others besides OG Emmy.
I do agree with a previous poster that this seems more of a card for Tron, Eldrazi, and Affinity (maybe even Hollow One) in Modern than something that is going to see a lot of play in Standard. Maybe we will see some big, nasty colorless creature in M19 or the next Ravnica set, but I don't expect there to be too many targets for it.

HIs goal wasn't actually to prevent the Gatewatch from stopping the Eldrazi; he just fought them because they interfered with his attempt to reignite his spark with the Khalni Heart. And he was actually planning on fighting against the Eldrazi just because he needed to save Zendikar to save himself, until he stumbled across the hedron network and realized he could use that to repower himself instead. https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/magic-story/any-cost-2015-11-25
That said, I do think that the quote fits with the previous text of pestilence demon more than it does Ob Nixilis.
A colorless theme is possible in the third set if they play up the artifact nature of Bolas' Eternal army. They were black zombies in HoD, but they really feel quite like artifact creatures, being made of stone and all...
This does hit artifact creatures and morphs as well. Okay we probably won't have morphs, but still...
If black is supposed to have the best removal, then 'splain Reality Shift? Blue's supposed to have the worst removal.

Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!

I don't even think reality shift was played in the standard it was in. I never recall it making a big splash at least. People in places like edhg love to complain about blue removal but I think they underestimate giving your opponent a 2/2 (that might be something better) or 3/3 token for free.

In EDH reality shift is a strong removal because a free 2/2 means nothing
I know, I run it in a few of my decks even. But it's stronger in EDH compared to regular magic where it's pretty balanced. And there's always a chance you give them something you don't want anyways.
Something like this happened to me once where I chaos warped two of my opponent's permanents and got him two huge dragons he proceeded to take over the game with. Oops.
Way too narrow to be played in modern. Why slot this in over the sphere? Doesn't hit noncreature permanents. You'll still die to Chalice of the Void, Karn Liberated, and Cranial Plating when playing this.

I'm not trying to prove anything, this is not a logic studies course, its fun, baseless speculation on a card and in the end it really doesn't matter. You are trying to make some sort of self-gratifying argument about a simple one line comment I made. Clearly, you have too much time on your hands, so the burden is really on you to stop trying to make mountains out of molehills. I will not respond to you, again, on this or any thread.

Those sure are some wild assumptions you're making about my stake in this, buddy.
Now they need a card depicting a giant Angel squeezing a Demon in her hand.

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
Even then, it feels so awkward to see it actually printed and to see it shoved so hard. getting rid of their creature for one mana isn't bad enough, you're also gaining a bunch of life too.
Then again, I have a feeling this won't actually stop Tron decks.
I imagine this will exist in core sets to keep any Vehicle Shenanagins somewhat under control.

I wouldn´t look too deep for this card´s implications in upcoming Standard sets, I´m pretty sure this is tailored as a failsafe for Modern.
Stay reasonable, be mindful of your expectations and don't feed the trolls.

And thanks to this card now you too can ruin Tron's day with one paltry mana, kill those mechanical wurms and unspeakable cosmic abominations without breaking a sweat.
