So "Azra" is Magic's Tiefling... Might have gone with Tiefling here as well, there should be no legal issue with that.
Try to imagine all life as you know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light. Total protonic reversal.
Also, I love the way they're doing the POV on these card arts, but I hate that everyone's going to be calling him "Virus the Veiled" by mistake until it becomes a meme. Oh ***** I just started it, didn't I?

Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!

I thought his name was Virus, but was reading it on my phone. Kind of surprised he's named "Virtue" though.
Azra refers to the Virgin Mary in Arabic. What are they thinking?
If we start getting into the etymology of everything, we are going to run into a lot of words that just don't fit without our Earth's very specific history. There's tons of words, names, and phrases that only exist because of religions, people, or events that don't exist or never happened in the MtG-verse. Like, why would anyone on Dominaria call something a "Voltaic" Key? Alessandro Volta never visited Dominaria, to my knowledge.
It's better to just not worry about it.
I mean, if Kiora loses her last name over this sort of thing...

There's a difference between "This is literally our word for Gods," and "This is a name that we use as metonymy for The Virgin Mary, who is important, but also not our God. "

Except she's the equivalent to the goddess of Catholicism, so I'd be weary of making such claims, especially since you're clearly unfamiliar with Catholicism in the Middle East.

I'll admit that I don't know the specifics of Catholicism in the Middle East, but I'm familiar with the general state of Catholicism and know Mary's importance. But to not get bogged down in Theology, Azra is a name, in several languages. It is used as metonymy, in the faith, but it isn't the only use of that word. It means Virgin in one. It's Pure in Hebrew. It's been used as a normal name. It's been a band name.

Not offending people is fairly easy. I doubt this will offend the majority, but if it did that would be a mistake on WotC.
On a more related subject I’m still not sure I get this pairs theme as much as the others. It just doesn’t feel quite as clashing as the rest, barring the GU one.

Personally, I get sick and tired of everything being offensive to someone. Considering that the Azra clearly don't have anything to do with Mary, I say if someone doesn't like the name, tough. Words mean different things in different cultures. In Battlebond's world, "Azra" means "horned humanoid", not "mythological matriarchial figure". They can change the name in Arabic printings, much like how they censor Skeletons in Chinese printings.
Anyway, Virtus and Gorm here clearly have a "little leader, big follower" dynamic, as evidenced by Gang Up. I wonder if we'll get stories for the various duos explaining how they met up and decided to work together?
MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.

I mean, I doubt it’ll offend the majority, which is really the concern. I’m not offended by Heliod after all, I can separate him from Apollon.
And they do have big/little, but so does Blue/Red, to even more of an extreme. It just doesn’t seem like they have the same... oomph as the other pairs.
I’m looking forward to the information we get though on the pairs. Most of them probably have interesting stories I hope.
To be fair, Regna/Krav and Khorvath/Sylvia both are based on opposing concepts. Pir/Toothy is the odd one out, barring one being real and the other allegedly imaginary.

Blue/Red (I’m horrible with names) has the little smart guy and big strong guy thing going too. Greens pairs really feel less overt. I could see Gorm and Virtus as “strong direct guy and sneaky guy” I suppose. Green and Blue’s is super not an opposite though. Shame too, I like the opposites work together theme of the other three.
Given this is Sports Entertainment, the plane. Both Gorn/Virtus and Zndrsplt/Okaun both seem to be playing aesthetically off of big guy small guy tag teams. (Although Zndrsplt and Okaun could also be labeled as big dumb monster/clever fast talking promoter.) For Gorn and Virtus this would be the big wrestler wears the opponent out, and the smaller wrestler lands a super cool top turnbuckle move to seal the deal. In any case, both of those teams are 'I will cover your weaknesses' in both mechanical and storytelling terms.
Gorn is big and sturdy and you're not getting past him, but he doesn't seem too capable at crushing his enemies. Virtus, however, can't really win any fair fights... so he chooses not to fight in those, and just stab people who aren't looking at him.
The biggest difference I see between Virtus/Gorm and Zndrsplt/Okaun is that the role of offense changes from smaller partner to bigger partner. Virtus sticks a sickle in you while Gorm tanks your offense, and Okaun smashes face while Zndrsplt covers him from spellcraft.

A new creature type. Looks like a race. Looks like a Tiefling/Devilkin with a new name derived from the term "Asura".
Yeah I got that after seeing the other one in the other thread. When I saw Virtu the first time I saw the horns and that's what I thought but he looks nothing like the others.
I know they don't like to cross the streams but I think they should have gone with Tiefling. It would have been immediately resonant a pretty substantial portion of their audience and be no less of a barrier to those who aren't D&D players.
Agreed.
One of the reasons to not use the word Tiefling is that is limits the species to those with Infernal (Devil) heritage, rather than a new race, which could expand on the concept to include Abyssal (Demon) heritage, as well as other "evil" parentages.
But on the whole, I find the use of the word Azra rather than Tiefling most perplexing.
Maybe it was a space issue. Azra is a lot shorter than Tiefling. Maybe Tiefling was just deemed to be too long in a set that paired the race up with classes like Warrior and Assassin.
Now I get it! Virtus and Gorm are an assassin and a bodyguard respectively! Thus preserving the theme of opposites.

It isn't comparable to Atua.
Way to mess up the alliteration, Gorm. Why aren't you a Giant Golem or a Wurm Warrior? Wall... Warrior?
