I understand the price break downs of all of this and the arguments surrounding it, but my reservations are based on this fact: It still comes down to the fact that it's $170 US price tag is equivalent to the cost of...
- ~7 prerelease entry fees
- ~17 FNM entry fees
- A good chunk of most people's rent, car payment, etc.
- Several pairs of shoes and a bunch of clothes.
- A couple weeks of food for a family of 2-3.
I would love this. I would consider it a decent investment Magic-wise. The individual card representation is nuts. BUT, one-hundred-and-seventy dollars is ONE-HUNDRED-AND-SEVENTY DOLLARS!!!!
Considering this is a limited run and a single new commander deck is $35, why isn't this more like $120-$130 as a bulk product. That's still a lot, but puts it in a more tempting/acquirable range.
Or, why not sell these individually again as a second run for... say... $5-$10 more than when they were first printed? That way, they still get their inflated price point, but also make it easier to digest for players as they can just pick one or two they want or can afford. Which makes them more money in the process as it becomes more accessible and the demand goes up.
Yes, yes... I know the individual secondary market value of the cards. I also know that every product isn't meant for everyone. But, why price a product over the $150 mark when your game famously has the basis of being able to start playing for $10-$15? Many people have quit games and hobbies because their makers started concentrating on making more large, boxed products that sell at high prices, because that raises the price of each one-time investment into a game to "out-of-reach" levels. While not entirely applicable, the level of investment into the "official" products for a casual format like Commander/EDH is getting ridiculous.
Also, this is why I rarely buy sealed product anymore and only buy singles. I don't want to add fuel to the fire and give them huge chunks of my money, thus making them think its okay to keep offering stacks of cardboard for hundreds of dollars.
[Sigh]
I digress...
Here's to hoping some of us can get a few of the singles on the rebound at a decent trade value and/or price. CHEERS!

Yeah, $170 US is around $230-$250 CDN after taxes, so that's a big pass here. I'll just get singles when the things are cracked.

The secondary market has no effect on pricing if WotC is to be believed. The price point of this set seems to hint otherwise.
I have bridge to sell to anyone who believes that.

You still believe in that? If it was true, master sets woulnd be priced at 10 dollars a pack
I am a bit confused here... are these, basically, entire deck reprints? Or are they new deck designs? Also, no new Commander cards?
Is this really just a cash grab because of the whole "new Legendary borders" thing?
This is the same thing as the previous Commander Anthology that came out over a year ago. These are just plain reprints, although why the price on this is so high is anyone's guess.

The original MSRP of the Commander decks was $34.99 USD. Let's round this to $35. $35 x 4 = $144. Since the MSRP of Commander Anthology is $164.99, I presume the extra $20 is for the new packaging, deck cases, and life counters.
Wizards has always priced boxed sets slightly above the contents. The holiday boxes, for example, were always $5 above buying the packs in them individually.

So, basically, it's a money sink... guess it gives some a second chance at getting the decks.
This is not a good indicator of "value", because not only will they drop (as already mentioned), but because those values are inflated by a bunch of .15, .25, and .35 cent cards that in reality have no value.
Oh, of course they'll drop - I'm not for a moment expecting to get $500 worth of cards out of them (well, not unless I hang onto them for ten years, at the rate the Magic economy is moving, anyway)...
... but pointing out that this thing is utterly loaded with value for its price point. Not often that we see a reprint product that is priced at roughly a third of what the singles are worth before printing. Not even the Challenge Decks were this level of ridiculous.
There's still value to be had without doubt, esp when the retail price per deck is about $42, but no one is getting $500 worth of singles. It's more like $340, with ~50 valuable cards, four of which are the Sol Rings (and using $2 to define "valuable" is setting a pretty low bar; defining a valuable card as $3 or more eliminates 11 cards from the list). The rest is 350 pieces of bulk you'd be hard pressed to give away.
When the reprints inevitably undercut their price tags, you'll probably be looking at $250 or less, in a $165 product (still fair, and still a good product/good value if you need the cards). This is absolutely worth the $165, but lets not fool ourselves into thinking you can buy it and crack $500 in singles.
Yup, that bit. Right there. Entirely possible for people to buy this, keep the stuff they want, and then sell or buylist half the stuff they don't to get most, if not all, of their money back.
