So blue is getting almost-Isamaru at common now? That kinda surprised me...
Blue has a few 2 power one drops, usually with a hoop to go through or a drawback, like Phantasmal Bear and Faerie Impostor.
Yeah, but the bear's drawback is pretty significant and the faerie is practically impossible to play t1, making it more of an etb/cast trigger enabler than efficient early creature.
Anyone else weirded out by the artifact matters cards? Don't get me wrong- I love artifacts and Mirrodin is one of my favorite sets. I just sort of expected to see more of a classic fantasy vibe like M10 and seeing robots on the cards kind of throws it off.

Since I highly expect to go to New Phyrexia again soon, and since Kaladesh had popular flavor, I'm not too surprised. It's usually good to have a subtheme that sets up the upcoming Standard.

Wouldn't it be odd to have an artifact block so soon after another artifact block rotated out? Not that I would complain about it.
Is Rustwing Falcon power-creep? I can't remember seeing a 1-drop flyer before that was bigger than 1/1.
There are bigger one drop fliers but they come with drawbacks such as Glint Hawk. Yeah, it certainly looks like the small number of French vanilla one drops have been effectively replaced by Rustwing Falcon.

It would play very well with Historic, I can see it as a big possibility.

Although Kaladesh was an artifact block, I thin kit was vastly more defined by Energy than anything else.
Plus, artifacts have a lot of value right now, given Brawl is taking off, and Historic is a big theme in Dominaria.

Isn't the only card with an robot in the art Gearsmith Prodigy so far? And you can have an artifact theme without robots, you can always fill the artifact slot with swords, shields, rings, golems, spellbooks and simple clockwork constructs if you want to go for the "classic fantasy" vibe.

Robots and other technological marvels have been a part of Magic since very early on. More recently, M15's Aeronaut Tinkerer had a very futuristic-looking ship in the art, and it still seemed appropriate for the MTG universe.
Speaking of M15, the set also had this wackiness which doesn't seemingly fall into either the "robots" or "classic fantasy" category:

Ensoul Artifact is CLASSIC fantasy! It harks back to the Sorcerer's Apprentice - imbuing inanimate objects with sentience so they can do the labor for you. I loved that card.
It's generally true that artifacts have changed a lot since the early days when they used to be fairly simple objects: goblets, tablets, candelabras... In fact the term "artifact" used to be much more descriptive of what the card was: an ancient relic unearthed by archeologists at some point, with mysterious power. I'm not entirely sure when the change happened, but the card type now also references devices built in present-day of Magic that happen to be lifeless and inanimate.
Not that core sets strictly "take place" anywhere, because most of them don't have a story as such. (Origins had five unconnected mini-stories for its, well, planeswalker origins, but we won't be getting anything more narratively developed than that.)
To all the talk about artifacts indicating an artifact block in fall, here’s my opinion.
As said the artifacts fits well with historic so it would make sense for wizards to put an Artifact in. I think the artifacts may hint at a Artifact plan (new phyrexia) but keep in mind they can hint at other things. For example, if we go to a Norse inspired or even a plane that’s medieval (just hypothetically) artifacts would hint at armor and swords or Norse style artifacts for that particular plane (similar to how enchantments worked in theros). Not saying this will happen but keeping options open.
Even so with sets now too, we can also see core sets predicting (that’s if wizards is even using core sets to predict anymore) for 3 potential future blocks so lots more to look at and it’s not like the last core set which had about a one year long block (3 sets) to predict for.
Off topic edit: I noticed the numbering on Trumphet blast was 167/250. Interesting because it seems to leave room to some artifacts or multicolored cards. I am curious as to whether we will get multicolored cards in this set (besides an obvious cycle of dual lands....obvious in my opinion anyway).

Yup, Glint Hawk, War Falcon, Loyal Pegasus, Oona's Gatewarden, Spindrift Drake, and Uktabi Drake are all 2/1s but have drawbacks. There are some 0/2 flyers for 1cmc, but it looks like Rustwing Falcon is the first 1cmc creature with flying and distributed p/t of 3, with no drawbacks!
