It's showing a red mage trying to hit something at the castle, and a blue mage defending that something. Neat. Granted, the flavour text kinda already explains what's going on.
I wonder how viable UR Wizards will be after Dominaria comes out.
Retort's art seem more like a protection spell than a counterspell. Other than that, neat mirror in art and flavor text, plus shows a little bit of nostalgis on Magic's origin.
I wonder how viable UR Wizards will be after Dominaria comes out.
With wizard basally being the default magic "class" and all the support the set has offered already Id say pretty good.

"You can tell how dumb someone is by how they use Mary Sue"
I wonder...how many people are still going to complain about the cost of Wizard's Retort even though it will be trivial to have it cost the same as Counterspell?
Zooming in on the digital brushstrokes does this art a disservice, I reckon. I expect they will look really nice at card-size, and I like the little story they tell.
Not feeling this digital art direction or the concept here. I want to see Wizards, not something that looks like a Land. Or better yet, a Screen Capture of a video game of a land.
I am guessing there will not be any 0-cost Wizards so you can just play this turn 1 as a Bolt, but perhaps a 1-cost Wizard so you can bolt turn 2?

A lot, as unless you have a 1-cmc Wizard by Turn 2, you can't cast Wizard's Retort on Turn 2.

I hope UR Wizards will be sick. I have really high hopes for that deck. Not sure how competitive it will be though, but I'm thinking it's got potential. Grixis Wizards could be sick too.

This would actually be riotously funny as a common legendary, but unfortunately can't exist in this exact form as hybrid mana's not in the set. Alas...
Well whaddya know, a conditional Lightning Bolt with an easy hoop. And folks were bellyaching about Open Fire. Now see, had Open Fire cost less, this wouldn't likely be seeing play in upcoming Standard. But now, I think it definitely will.

MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.

Whether the cards will be played will be decided by how many Wizards with CMC<2 there are.

Not sure that pushes them (or more accurately - the counterspell) across the threshold in modern, but it's conceivable.
They wanted to highlight the return to the "any target" wording

So start off with Siren Stormtamer or Soul-Scar Mage, then--shouldn't be a problem much of the time; the Stormtamer also lets you use Lookout's Dispersal on turn 2. I normally wouldn't expect to be using Wizard's Retort before turn 3, anyway, but I suppose we will have to see what develops.
