That is the possibly the blandest art in the multiverse. It could be a 1/1 soldier and it wouldn't look out of place, there is nothing tieing it thematically to the old art; where is the helmet, the skull armor or the badass sword?
Not a fan of the art, but having a token for it is always nice. I'd love if they'd create tokens for all the cards that don't have it. I'd probably buy a booster filled with brand new tokens for $4 than buy this set for $10.
On board with all about the art... is he squinting??? If I met him in real life, I would politely ask him and his twin to put the helmet back, he'sscaring the children. Well, it's nice to see Stangg back in black border, but for these older ancient sets, the original artwork with a black border would have been prefered (to me). Wonder if reprinting the old art would hurt prices of the original printing since one of the original complaints of Chronicles (outside of the main complaint, of over-printing & monetary value destruction) was seeing the unsightly white border... oh how we howled and stomped about how the white borders made the cards look juvenile and not as bad ass.
This is a cool addition to the game, so thanks to Wizards on this.
That said, I'll just be using two Stanggs from Chronicles for the foreseeable future, cos they're dirt cheap and look cool.

Cool Stangg reprint, nice art but terrible art direction. Did they not mention to the artist that Stangg has black and gold armor covered in spikes and skulls and his helmet is kind of iconic?
This would be like them commissioning new art for Arcanis the Omnipotent and showing a normal mage sitting at a desk reading a book.
Ha, once again, I find this art much much better than the old one. Truly people, the old art looks like it was drawn by my five-year-old cousin.
The old art has:
- no background
- no sense of perspective or depth
- a weirdly placed arm, whose forearm is to thin when in constrast with the torso
- a completely unrealistic helmet
- random little skulls (?) What is that? Paintings? Or did he kill the ant-people?
- poorly designed sword
The new one has:
- background
- depth, perspective
- a realistic warrior in a nice posture
- a very belieavable armor
- a mother******* sam l. jackson with a badass red beard that is about to cut you in half if you look at him wrong
- the cool and neat detail that the twin token mirrors the original art, but the light comes from the same side and details different aspects of the drawing, such as a scar in the twin's head or the twin's earring, while the art from the actual card better reveals the etching in the armor.
I think this new art is superior by virtually every metric you could choose, and people like the old one SOLELY for nostalgia reasons. Here is the thing: most magic players today probably didn't get into the game when Stangg was being played. This art is certainly an improvement.

You know what else is completely unrealistic? A black ginger.
Or maybe... you know... he may have dyed his beard, like this cheery old gentleman here:

I would agree if this wasn't supposed to be a nostalgia set.
That being said, I love the new Ihsan's Shade art so much I'm getting a foil just because I want it. It's not that new art is bad. It's also not that I disagree with it being superior. I just don't think this was the place to do it. This was the place to pull up the Time Spiral timeshifted sheet.
