It's not bad but I'll miss the iconic magic logo. Hope this doesn't make it's way onto card backs one day.
From the article:
There is no current or future plan to change printed card backs, or to take away your ability to collect and shuffle up cards from all sets and eras.
I don't think even Hasbro would pull a New Coke caliber stunt like that.
Now... back to the logo....
I really don't care for it. Like that annoying new Pepsi logo.
Prior logo iterations still had that "rough around the edges" look even as they "polished" it up. More at tune with... well... Wizards.
This one really looks like someone sat down with a vector editing program and said, " hey boss, this old logo is too hard to scale to new products. It gets old creating new raster files all the time. How about if I make a whole new logo as a vector SVG file? Then we don't have to hire an artist to redo the logo every time. We just grab this here file and voila!"
I think I've learned to treat Magic cards like baseball cards: keep 'em in a binder in numerical order, don't play with 'em, try to finish the set and just keep my head down.
Meh? I hate to be the "back in my day" guy, but the old logo had character that this lacks. You could tell it was the MtG logo just by the font. This looks too generic; like I could just download this font myself from any old font store. It's not awful, just bland.

The card back has been a flawed, outdated relic from almost the moment of its creation. If changing it (in a more permanent fashion than DFCs) were on the table, it would have already happened a long time ago, possibly even with the printing of Arabian Nights.

And we would all be stuck playing nothing but blocks. No Vintage/Legacy/Modern/Standard that we all love and hate. Opaque sleeves wasn't even a thing when Garfield thought it was a good idea to change Ice Age's card back before someone pointed out the error of his ways.
I mean, i dont want or expect anything over the top but this looks like a kid rushing to finish a project in his graphic design class. Its cheap, forgettable, boring.
Rebranding is generally a sign that the suits in charge don't understand the brand.
Welcome to the New Coke era of Magic, let's hope they find as soon as TCCC that taking away what people likes about your product is not a winning strategy and don't go the way of Pepsi Co. instead, floundering forever jumping behind trends way past their prime.
That logo was really bothering me. So I took a harder look. I just realized why I dislike this logo so much. That's the freaking Planeswalker logo!
Really WotC?
I thought my issue was the new vector friendly font and colors but now I realize that WotC/Hasbro decided to just blatantly toss their old logo and make the whole thing all about the Planeswalkers!
I hate the Planeswalkers. Not the card, what they represent. Magic is supposed to be about you, not 30 some-odd Planeswalkers derping it across the Planes. This new logo doesn't strengthen Magic's identity as Magic, it weakens players role in the game.

But according to Magic, you are a planeswalker derping it across the planes. You can summon creatures and spells from various planes to fight your battle. You draw mana from a connection to lands found across the planes. And when you recruit another planeswalker to aid you, they only join with a limited amount of loyalty to your cause, which can be increased or exhausted, depending on how you use them. You are a planeswalker - the concept, not the card type.
When they updated to the modern card frame, the ones with the "Beleren" font, i hated it too. Now if possible, I play "new border cards" as much as possible.
Maybe it sucks now but it might be nicer eventually

MtG is where you can hate white players or black players, and still not be racist.

You're correct. I just don't actually think that's actually how WotC sees it anymore. Yes, I know what it says in the introductions. But, I believe WotC's actions don't quite jive with it.
If the central focus of the game is you then why bother with Planeswalkers at all? Need to pair up with another Planeswalker? That's what multiplayer was for.
Remember 1996 World Champion? WotC made the game about you and they drove that point home with Champion. Now we've got Planeswalker cards. It's not about you anymore, it's about them.
I m ok with it, sure, it is as uninspired as it could be, but i will only see it in sealed product boxes and on boosters, if i really don't like it i can easily skip fatpacks/bundles and be done.
There is an old trend of companies simplifying their logos. MTG is just following suit.
This is partly because complex logos with fine details do not appear too good in small devices.
The old magic logo evokes a feel of ancient-ness to it. Metallic and shiny stuff makes this feel modern.
This reminds me of the logo for Lost.
The title one in the show, not the on the DVDs.
I'll give it this: I don't hate the font. Sure I like the old "M" better, but the "g" is pretty sweet.
I am also on the boat of "Why in the nine spheres of Phyrexia is this shiny silver? Why the **** do you ****ing ****ers ****ing hate brown? Is it because it ****ing reminds you of how you are big ****ing piles of ****ing ****? (brown is the color of chocolate, how can you hate chocolate?) Because guess what, I STILL hate what they did to artifacts back in 2008 as far as formatting. Too light grey, too new looking. "The Archaic Arcane" was the feel that Magic had. Did you see the Sorcerer's Apprentice? Did he learn from Ipads and websites? No they had ancient rings and tomes. Yes, I did bring that up because MtG advertised for the movie back in the day. DID YOU LOOK AT WHAT YOU ENDORSED? Further more Hasbro, did you see Doctor Strange? How many bright silver shinies where there in that movie, outside of medical instruments?
There worst part of this is the purple background. I actually don't hate it. It is trying it's best to keep the magic-y vibe going with the Terminator silver all front and center, but guess what? That background is going to be GONE when they but it on box and booster art.
AT LEAST INSCRIBE THE-FRIDGE-OF-TODAY-COLORED LETTERS WITH RUNES! If not that, EVERY product with this logo has to be foiled where this lettering is. You want shiny, you better deliver shiny. Own it, and I will respect you for it. Like Ke$ha and her glitter. She owns her glitter obsession and I am all for it, more power to her.
The saddest part to me is that I knew I wouldn't like it, I saw the thread title and went "oh boy, this won't be good". Since, you know, they don't really get anything right these days except from the core game itself.
Edit: I mean it doesn´t look terrible, it´s just that the old one is such a distinguished classic, I think they gave up on a valuable asset by chnging into something more streamlined and bland. Oh well, I guess we´ll always have the card back.
A cleaned up recolored (blue color scheme to yellow color scheme) version of the games name as seen on the cardback.
See attachment. It's seen once very large and also on the box in the top left corner.
I liked the old logo for being colorful and fanciful due to having a border and pattern. I would racognize the M alone and they are surrendering their brand identifiability with this. I cannot imagine the marketing reasoning behind this. They made good use of the recognizable M e. g. in their M15 logo.
If I was in their place I would distinguish between the planeswalker logo and the Magic logo, but then that might be why I'm not getting paid the big bucks for this kind of decisions.
This on the other hand is just the name in a different font. Though it is in line stylistically with the planeswalker logo. It's a low impact change, but I think they make a mistake whenever they turn their backs on the "book aesthetic" that the card back still shares. It is something that distinguished Magic but they prefer to fall in line.

yea, surprising that they didn't just rename the entire game.
