Many of the high-priced cards, like mana drain, are played in narrow competitive formats or only EDH. Their current price is held up by scarcity. Mana drain is not a 200$ card in IM booster. It's a 50$ card. You'll be opening boosters, look at "all that value" but realize the value was in how hard to get they were, not due to real competitive demand.
I think you just made the case against yourself.
Yeah, this will likely take Mana Drain from a $200 card to a $50 card. Which, while it does mean that people who crack one aren't really opening a $200 bill (and most are under no delusion that they are), the real benefit and reason people are excited, despite your attempt to urinate on others' excitement, is because the fact that these will be $50 cards means that if they want to buy or trade for one, now they'll be able to for one fourth the outlay of what they would have had to offer yesterday. People who considered it a card out of reach for their budget or trade stock now will have it within reach. And that's a reason for excitement.
A lot of people keep saying Drain is $200 but I don't think it has been for a long time. Sure, I guess that's the SCG price or something?
Hell, when I was at Gencon last month you could buy English ones from $110 EX to $130 LP from different dealers all day every day.
$150 for NM ones, $150 for foils. It's just not a $200 card anymore. I believe this is mostly because they kept releasing the judge foils.
This new one arguably has better art than the judge foil and will be more readily available.
I'm hoping it settles in the $60-70 realm as THEY WILL COME IN JAPANESE and I need like 2 or 3 more Drains for EDH.
Other than avacyn and Thune, what other "iconic" angels? Seems like a lot of overpriced instant and sorceries and legfendary cycles. All good things, mind. But where are the iconic iconics other than dragons

Serra Angel is pretty iconic, so I'd expect her at uncommon or something. You might also see stuff like Giant Growth, Lightning Bolt (or Shock or Lightning Strike) or Swords to Plowshares/Path to Exile. There is a ton of room out there to print stuff that is popular, decent in limited and won't break people's collections.

The "Crazy One", playing casual magic and occasionally dipping his toes into regular play since 1994.
Currently focusing on Pre-Modern (Mono-Black Discard Control) and Modern (Azorious Control, Temur Rhinos).
Find me at the Wizard's Tower in Ottawa every second Saturday afternoons.

Sure, feel free to spawn your unrelated narrative as you wish. I say the card prices and scarcity will not be what people obviously assume, you talk about people not buying booster but rather buying more available cards at a reduced price. We can also discuss card stock quality, foil process and art if you wish.
I also see that iconic pretty much stops at rare. There's been multiple shot of whole boosters and so far I've seen *extremely* few common and uncommon that I would qualify as iconic: lightning helix, wall of root, what else? They could not even be bothered to print lightning bolt, path to exile, inquisition of kozilek, serum vision. Heck, not even giant growth as far as I can see.
So, it's the usual game of printing some exciting mythics (many not), some exciting valuable rares (mixed with a high doze of worthlessness) to hype people until they actually open boosters and realize their true odds.
But this is no standard set, so anyone who is not on the hype train gets clubbed. Normal sets you get clubbed for not thinking it's homeland 2.
This likely means we've seen the best of what Ixalan has to offer and nothing is left there worth getting excited about.
To be fair, given that almost all the rare & mythics are spoiled, this is almost a given if you care about non-limited formats.
Idk, Opt is lower rarity. Honestly, look at the last 20 or so cards that have made a Modern impact, probably half have been lower rarity. I am holding out hope, if there is Counterspell proper, or good removal it may very well be uncommon

Project Booster Fun makes it less fun to open a booster.
You sir are a gentleman and a scholar. I can't wait till I can play my bicycle land out, thus making me heckbent, while I have Nessie on the field. You know, so I can attack with my Pervert.
I really like that green merfolk. Either draws you a card or you get a 3/2 for 2, which might be bigger with whatever merfolk lord(s) there are.
Iconic Masters is giving me hope this might be the first really good Masters set since the 1st one, but Masters sets usually disappoint at the end and it has a $10 price tag to contend with.
Mythic slots are bad. Praetors that are worth nothing, except for Elesh. Cards like Channel, who literally, LITERALLY, don't see play in ANY FORMAT (except for... vintage cube? lol).
Rare slots are mixed. Some amazing cards like Cryptic Command and visions and some terrible like Malfegor and sphinx of uthunn.
Uncommon slots. Most seem terrible. Yes, we have bauble. Then we also have Topan Freeblade (oh yeah, the iconic Topan Freeblade, practically the face of MTG), Palladium Myr, Guttersnipe, Sandstone Oracle.
The commons seem mostly terrible too. Aside from wall of roots, you have what? Festering newt? Overgrown battlements? Blergh.
It seems like the rare slot is the only relevant slot in this product, and even this one is a coinflip. Yeah, thanks, but no thanks.

Complaining about a Mana Drain reprint. Wow, just wow.

More like MM17 2.0 plus Mana Drain, plus ChannelFireball wins.
