I'm usually not one to complain about sets, but man, I just have zero excitement about this one. There are a couple of cool cards that I'll buy singles of, but it's not just the power level of the cards. The cards themselves don't really feel that exciting. There's almost nothing in the set that is making me want to brew..
The lifegain makes it better in the decks that are strictly Grixis and have no use for access to white or green mana.
But what deck wants to stoop so low that they are willing to run unknown shores? And how come you don't have any use for white or green? Even if your main board doesn't have white or green cards doesn't mean you can't still run white and green cards in your side board.
Chaos Maw is a good card for limited. Hitting all the things for 3 and being a big 6/6 body is acceptable late game play. It sucks the Etenarlized zombies are 4 toughnss, but thems the breaks.
The point I was making is that they all have a spot tthey can fit in. Feel free to show me how they can or can't be played. Discussion is why we're here!
Apocalypse Demon is bad in that you need to jump through two major hoops. Having enough cards in your graveyard to make the P/T worth it, and sacrificing a creature if you wanted to attack or block for the next turn. Yes one feeds into the other, but I have played many a game with less than 6 cards in the graveyard, and no way I could conceivably pay the cost.
This card could have worked in Delirium charged world of SOI/EMN where filling your graveyard and making tokens was super easy.
What a dissapointment. Kaladesh seemed like such a strong set. I liked so many cards from that set and that says a lot because I hate artifacts in general....
So how does the following set all about Bolas have such a lower power level?
I mean they didn't even make a good counterspell with Bolas flavor. Isn't he in GRIXIS??? I need a new Bolas counterspell...
We were about to get through without a single bad rare unplayable in all formats, and then, Apocalypse Demon.
ehhh Apocalypse Demon isn't totally unplayable in a commander deck like Jarad that likes to sacrifice big monsters.
I won't be playing it in Jarad. There are so many better options that don't fold to a Bojuka Bog, Angel of Finality, etc. Jarad has no shortage of big, efficient creatures with better abilities.

Uh, I wasn't saying it was viable, I was just saying it was not *universally* worse than Unknown Shores. If one was (for some reason) inclined to play Unknown Shores in a Grixis-colors Commander deck, for instance, they're likely be better off playing this, because they can't actually have any white or green mana symbols on cards in their deck.
You know, having Samut featured in a few cards, and without mention of her becoming a planeswalker in any of the text, makes for a confusing outside-in look at the set and seeing that she's a creature in one set and a PW in the next with zero explanation in art or flavor.
Do you also, in my opinion, make the mistake of relating the word casual to the power level of a deck? http://www.gatheringmagic.com/edgrabianowski-06232017-the-command-score/
Look at this silly person thinking 'casual' meant low power level.
Casual refers to Rules Enforcement Level, atmosphere of the players, acceptance of proxies/alters/non-normally legal cards.

Casual in jamming big monsters that synergies with graveyard. A type of deck was thinking in making. Don't take my comment too seriouslly, chill.
"Raghhr! Set is awful!! Foam at mouth!! It's like if Homelands and a dead hamster had a baby! Wizards is comprised of brain damaged puppy people!"
The usual reviews.
The power level seems pretty normal for a small set. Nothing particularly surprising here. Magus of the Crucible is a huge win for the world, and there are several other cards to latch onto. My only real complaint is the lack of off-color cycling lands. Eternalize probably could have been handled better, but all in all, it looks to be a satisfactory set, even if it doesn't contain as many constructed plants as everyone thinks they want.
This is the first time I've ever had gripes with a set. Maybe I'm spoiled but I've been playing since the end of the Scars block and I've never had anything bad to say about a set.

A casual Jarad deck. A very casual one.
The demon is weak, but being mono-black allows it to go into grave decks outside of strict BG, and Rite of Consumption and Essence Harvest can always use another target.

I think the Theros-block small sets, and Dragon's Maze, had many of the same issues this set has. It's been a bit of a recurring problem with small sets, even if the past few have been not-bad.

You didn't think Chaos Maw already burned that bridge?
I don't think there's a real home for Hazoret's Undying Fury, either, with there being no way to actually predict and control it short of Doomsday.

Or at least reprint Soul Manipulation or Countersquall for flavor at least? Why is Countersquall worth $7?
