hrm...The Scarab God you have on the battlefield can eternalize a copy of The Scarab God you have in your graveyard so it would then trigger its own first ability during your upkeep. If you were being weird, that is.
And if you apparently have a copy of Mirror Gallery to get around the legend rule. Or didn't mind wasting a perfectly good creature to get a token that disappears when bounced.
To be fair, it can be a good use of your Scarab God when fighting another Scarab God, or if you've got one already dead. Exile theirs/yours with the return trigger on the stack, make a zombie token, let your real one die and go back to hand, and voila! You've got a token copy of the Scarab God and the real one waiting in the wings to come back out if they deal with it.
Insane. I literally dug through my collection for zombies when this was spoiled. On top of that obvious build, just stealing creatures in some random grindy EDH deck and getting to scry a little each turn is really good. On top of that, it is difficult to actually get rid of this. Love it.

The activated ability would be good with any small creatures with abilities that can scale based on power (or toughness). They would benefit from eternalize in the same way that Dreamstealer does.

The Scarab God. Honestly disappointed the way Wedge was hyping it up.
It's a great EDH card and will probably see play in Standard. Doubt it sees play in Modern or Eternal.
Wedge is the epitome of a shill so of course he was going to hype it up to hell and back, that's what he does.
He used to be better. I understand it's good to be positive about the card, but the combination of pure bombast combined with the sponsorship bit at the end by TCGPlayer just makes it feel like a hype train commercial for selling the next version of budweiser.

Let me put it this way: When it comes to EDH, the hype is unquestionably worthy. This will be an extraordinarily popular Commander and I think impacts UB zombies, an already very popular archetype. The problem is for anyone who doesn't care about EDH, eg. me, it's a card that may see play as a finisher in Standard and that's about it. The way he was hyping it up, it was gonna be something like the next Fatal Push, some sort of utility card that will see play everywhere and totally warp every format it's legal in. I mean the card is an uncommon and averaging about $9 a copy, which is absolutely ******* ridiculous. I was hoping for something like that This card is it for EDH, not it for anything else.
No doubt he's a shill, but I don't think he was overhyping it in the sense that it will have a huge impact on EDH. Just for those who don't care about EDH, the card's mostly meaningless. I do really like the card though and deserves the creature type of God.

The entire reason they gave The Scarab God to Wedge is because they know he hypes cards up all the time and there has been a push in general by the games industry to adopt more youtubers into their marketing campaigns. I think the only result we can look forward to is more and more positive youtube personalities suddenly having the tables flipped on them because of incorporating sponsorships and doing exactly what Wedge basically is doing now: hyping a card and then acting as a promotional tool for TCG Player. Heck, even Tolarian Community College has started to feel a bit too much like they are owned by Card Kingdom and the only place that still feels okay with the sponsorships is Loading Ready Run. In their case they sort of just name drop them like a radio talk show so it isn't like we have the logo and other details on the screen.
Wedge has gone a bit far though with basically advertising booster box sales at the sponsor site after reviewing the cards.

I still think they went too conservative on all these gods and should have priced them one cmc lower than this. That seems to be the running theme with a lot of cards in the set outside a few exceptions, such as the new counterspell (which is uncommon and actually is better in a lot of cases than Disallow).
It's not a running theme with cards from HOU, it's a running theme with a lot of cards from every set ever - if you read what people say on MTGS during spoiler season.
Why are people upset that people are getting sponsored, allowing them to continue making their content. It's what they have to do to keep going.
One, if the sponsor gets corrupt or has allegations the actions those who are being sponsored become political. Two, over advertising the sponsor is a big issue due making the channels involved appear like sellouts, Three, sponsorships, no matter how benign, give the sponsoring company leverage over the sponsored individuals content.

This one is pretty good. Dump a high costing creature with abilities to spit out a 4/4 token copy. Bring out a low costing weakling as a 4/4 token copy like Slither Blade.
I must have missed the sponsor part? vid seemed fine to me. Yes, he hyped it, but this is a legitimately insane commander. Probably the strongest UB commander in the GAME for casual-75% play. Maybe not as good as, say, oona for competitive play, but maybe it is, who knows. And UB is one of the strongest 2-color pairs, certainly within the top 3. So yes, this is a big deal. He didn't hype it for standard or any other boring formats, though I imagine it could be playable there too. Card is value incarnate.

The problem is for those of us who don't play EDH. I don't touch EDH, so when he goes insane on Twitter about how it's by far the best card he's ever gotten to preview, I'm expecting something that's constructed playable. Hell, if it were Nimble Obstructionist, I'd say the hype would be worth it. But this is just a Commander. Yes, there are a ton of EDH players, but I still felt let down.

Okay, so those only happen if the sponsor has far more control than the creator, which only happens if the creator signed a contract allowing it, and only if the sponsor starts to do shady things. If the deal between the two parties is nothing more than make sure you name drop and say you can find product there then what's the problem?

That's like getting angry that car commercials sell you on the ability to drive it in far rougher terrain then you ever have the need for. "Arg, darn them for focusing on something that isn't for me, that car company is a joke, and I hate them!" Just because you don't play EDH doesn't mean what he is saying is any less true.
Also, this is definitely a control finisher, it could easily see play in constructed, even along with Torrential Gearhulk.

EDH is a contructed format.
I understand there are other constructed formats, but I'm pretty sure no one actually enjoys them. I think they're more of a fringe thing.

I dunno, I see some potential for it in standard like in a bug or even burg deck. Some ramp, zombie tribal, kill spells mixed with counter spells and draw. But that is just a quick little brainstorm of mine.

This aint your girlfriends meta! This is a man's meta! TURBO META.
I think I'm changing my tune on this guy. He's better than he looks, but he doesn't fit into the kind of deck that I was expecting. Basically Demir control using him to flashback gearhulks. Having one or two of this fellow in the deck basically doubles the number of hulks you have and can let you replay just about any removal or draw spell that was used earlier. He might also work in zombies, but I'm not sure on that one.

Seems like Scarab provides the most value with zombie support. All your slack jaws have to do is block, and the scarab god kills them a little (or a lot) each turn while giving you filtering. I'd rather play the locust god as a control finisher. Pull from tomorrow, poke eyes repeatedly. I see the torrential gearhulk value as well though. The question is how well can the 5/5 stick in game 1? And does the recursion tax your opponent's hand enough while still staying alive?
I think the Scarab God takes advantage of zombies, but doesn't require them to actually be good. What makes it good is the ability to recur creatures from the yard to exploit ETB triggers late game. The scry ability is more like icing on the cake because it mostly just fixes future draws, which can be achieved through other means like Contingency plan. I also think it is a good answer for control decks that use gearhulks against artifact hate like Abrade, as it effectively lets the player just play the gearhulk again as a 4/4 and flash back again some other spell, or if someone chooses to use the Noxious Gearhulk, blow away another creature. So, I'm not yet convinced it's a mainboard card in standard, but it is definitely worth trying out in a few different builds.
I mean, it's tempting to say he is good with zombies, but honestly how much of an advantage is it going to be to scry 4 on your turn 6 or 7 upkeep in a zombie tribal standard deck?

If you scry 4 on turn 6, they lose 4 life and you've untapped so you'll be getting a zombie from either graveyard for 4 or casting another zombie to do 5 or 6 damage on turn 7. The most power is in what you can return but setting up all your draws and draining life every turn doesn't suck either.
