Pokemon and YuGiOh print and reprint cards to "oblivion" but I have not seen those games diminishing in sales or popularity.
Serious question - do those games have a lot of players who have been playing for well over a decade, or are they primarily still popular because they’re turning on a new generation of players at least as fast as they’re losing players by attrition? It would explain the differences in reprint attitude if a substantial portion of the Magic player base is players who have been around for a decade or two and own a lot of older stuff they hope retains value, while the bulk of poke/yugi players are a newer younger generation less likely to have entrenched themselves in a decade of speculative value.
No idea, but I'm certainly not still in Magic after over 20 years because my collection has accumulated in value. If anything, the ridiculous prices on singles makes me frustrated and annoyed when I want to try new decks that I don't have cards for. My first Magic set was Fallen Empires and I've been playing off and on ever since. I stick with Magic because it's a brilliant game, not because of my """investment""" or collection's value. I'd be even happier if my collection was worthless and I could try out a new deck for less than a mortgage payment.
Yeah the prices are insane in this game. There is a good reason pauper took off: It's the only format that lets people try new decks and play consistently without spending too much money. It's painful when every single card you start needing costs 10 minimum and usually ends with at least 8 45-50+ dollar cards.

As someone who played Yugioh for 13 years, you don't want to compare MTG to that "game." Yugioh is a horrendous, abysmal, catastrophic trash heap of a game that Konami ran into oblivion. The game had potential, and I miss the old days. But it's been destroyed. With no kitchen table or supported casual formats, it's a dead game to me. And the way it insidiously rotates cards with a banlist and power creep make its reprint policy negligible, because once they've sold the reprint product, they're already on to selling its fools the next best thing.
Trust me, MTG is nothing to whine about relative to Yugioh.
This is an interesting take on why they reprint... I have always had the same feeling even way way back in 1996.. that the day they are willing to reprint to the ground is the day at least you know the company is giving up and cashing out... the game would likely still be around, legacy being proof of the resilience of entrenched players

Yes, they got more and more costly over the past 2 years. At this point, I don't think it will ever be reprinted (the effect is easy to explain, but hard to write on a card). To be honest, given how bad the presale prices are on the current masters 25 boxes are I'm almost certain they are going to do a shorter run of this than the last masters set. They basically have no choice if they even had to cut a standard set down a year early due to poor sales. Assuming the game survives this is going to be like the Lorwyn / Elwyn block all over again where if any of the cards actually see play the price is going to go up, except in this case the run was cut short rather than planned to be a shorter run to begin with.
They've already ended new print runs for Modern Masters and Eternal Masters so that'll be good for the LGS to make money off of and makes MTG Finance happy. Hour of Devastation went out of print a year early coinciding with Hasbro's 2% stock decline amid Toys R Us liquidating their assets. When the Toy Industry is in trouble you know that doesn't bode well with Hasbro. By cutting ties with WotC in 2021 they believe that table top gaming will become a thing of the past.

Konami markets yugioh to children who don't know better. They also have an anime and nostalgic following, for the time being.

There's cards well over that at common. They just aren't played a whole lot. I'd say the ones that spike the most are flagbarers and Deftblade Elite. That and Gorilla Shaman is used in a few decks as well. The most expensive cards in the format are Chainer's Edict, Gush, and I'd say Ash Barrens, but that was before it got reprinted.

So apparently on WotC's official reddit page and 4chan they're deleting posts/threads that link to Rudy's box openings of Masters 25 that he already pre-ordered. Each of the two boxes were nearly identical except for Jace, the Mind Sculptor in place of Mikokoro, Center of the Sea in the second box. My guess as to why they took the link to Rudy's video down was because they were afraid that nobody would buy Masters 25 If they found out that none of the boxes were randomized properly.

I'll be interested in this when it's more than anecdotal. It's a concern, sure. A higher incidence of this phenomenon over the coming days will be of far more interest than a single reported case, though.
Well either way this isn't going to stop me from buying singles for this set since I'm already aiming to pick up a few cards for Commander. I need to pick up a Protean Hulk for my friends' Reaper King deck unless he decides to go with one of the new Commanders in Dominaria. I've also been thinking about running Azusa, Lost but Seeking for Duel Commander yet I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for Crucible of Worlds which should've got a reprint in this set.

Given what is going on over at Reddit, it's not just Rudy's boxes. There are entire stores opening boxes right now and are finding the same results. This isn't even funny: Someone could literally just by hand pick out the packs that have the money cards in them, it's that bad. One of the posters also mentioned their store is doing a phone call to their distributor on the issue. Not sure what that does, but still.
Basically, you can't even trust the box you are getting on pre-order at this point and heaven help anyone foolish enough to pick up loose packs.

I really wouldn't mind if the company did reprint the higher cost cards in products that actually would drop the price, I'm just sort of wondering if the price of the cards is because of the amount of cards or the product they got reprinted in. For example, if Tarmogoyf holds it's price primarily due to masters costing 240 usd a box and there's actually a lot of copies, what happens when they reprint it in a 30 dollar precon product and do a 50,000 box run?
I know pokemon prints a lot of copies, but I think it really is how they reprint it that keeps the prices down on the tournament cards later on.
Epic Dumpsters 2.0 continues to impress with its fail.
you would need WAY WAY more then 50K box's to impact price. Also at some level you have to admire their dedication to failure at all levels. bad set, bad value, bad art, bad price point, bad potental to hold long term value, now bad randomization, If this was deliberate they REALLY paid attention to detail.

Played the lottery with approx 24 boxes today to get singles for our customers on friday. The variance in this set, at least with those boxes in terms of mythics, was INSANE. 10 master of the wild hunt and 2 prossh stick out the most.
I also took another picture of the three foil mythics these boxes packed, as a little bonus. This might be a very good occasion to show some of you why I might come across as negative or pessimistic sometimes, or why hate I garbage mythics in such products with such a passion... because it's ME who opens this **** all the god damn time!
(Apologies for the bad quality, I forgot to correct a setting for my cam as I took the pics.)

Ouch, although you have a stack of Imperial Recruiter there.
Did you notice any tracking in the boxes? Were you getting the same rares over and over and in the same order? With 10 MotWH, 9 Clique and 8 Armageddon, it almost appears as if you may have. Or it could just be "variance" I suppose.

Yes, those recruiters have to mitigate quite some damage.
Well, we paid close attention to the first few boxes, but they seemed alright so we didn't observe as closely for the others. And yet, if you want my opinion on this, there is/was an issue with at least one print track here. I'm no expert, but there seemed to be a group of rares, among them coalition relic, izzet chemister and courser of kruphix, which felt far rarer than a pattern of rares around hells caretaker, which I felt that it was the most common rare in the set. Also, if I remember correctly, the (assumed) rarer track with coalition relic and the others had either bridge, chalice or prosh as mythics between them, which would explain their scarcity in this run.
That said, 24 boxes isn't a huge volume to judge things, but incredible variance is already obvious just from the mythics I photographed. Ixalan and Rivals of Ixalan also had quite the obvious tracks of printing. It's hard to describe and might not be a 100% accurate, but if you ever opened a rivals box with either kumena, the phoenix or immortal sun in it, chances are unusually high to get all of them in the same box.

Yeah the prices are insane in this game. There is a good reason pauper took off: It's the only format that lets people try new decks and play consistently without spending too much money. It's painful when every single card you start needing costs 10 minimum and usually ends with at least 8 45-50+ dollar cards.

I don't know the answer to that, since I don't work for either Konami or the Pokemon company. Based on what I have read about Pokemon, the Pokemon brand appeals not only to new players but also long-time fans of Pokemon. I believe it's part of the reason why Pokemon Go did so well, and it did have an effect on increased sales of Pokemon Sun and Moon released shortly after Pokemon Go. I presume some of those fans play the TCG and keep it going. Another part of Pokemon TCG is its art. There are kids who buy cards just for the art and collecting and don't even play.
I have no idea what drives YuGiOh, but it seems to be selling well enough for Konami to produce new sets/products every year.
Yet, Konami still releases product every year with no obvious shrinkage. So, Konami is making enough money to keep it going. I get that you are fed up with YuGiOh, but somebody is buying their stuff to keep the game going.

1. (Ravnica Allegiance): You can't keep a good esper control deck down... Or Wilderness Reclamation... or Gates...
2. (War of the Spark): Guys, I know what we need! We need a cycle of really idiotic flavor text victory cards! Jace's Triumph...
3. (War of the Spark): Lets make the format with control have even more control!

Basically, you can't even trust the box you are getting on pre-order at this point and heaven help anyone foolish enough to pick up loose packs.

Man, this is dumb and terrible.
I know pokemon prints a lot of copies, but I think it really is how they reprint it that keeps the prices down on the tournament cards later on.
you would need WAY WAY more then 50K box's to impact price. Also at some level you have to admire their dedication to failure at all levels. bad set, bad value, bad art, bad price point, bad potental to hold long term value, now bad randomization, If this was deliberate they REALLY paid attention to detail.
Some cards that are super exspensive back then are no more
Iconic master did the same thing
And no they will not make the run smaller than iconic masters.
I say we will spot the packs in Walmart/target is almost impossible to not spot one.
Well the next reprint set is battlebond hopefully we will see great reprints in that set
(Besides nearly all the surge cards from OGW.)

The thought in the thread when I read it earlier was that it was auto-deleted by bots.
I also took another picture of the three foil mythics these boxes packed, as a little bonus. This might be a very good occasion to show some of you why I might come across as negative or pessimistic sometimes, or why hate I garbage mythics in such products with such a passion... because it's ME who opens this **** all the god damn time!
(Apologies for the bad quality, I forgot to correct a setting for my cam as I took the pics.)
edit: approx 24 boxes, thank you raptor
