If you go to https://wpn.wizards.com/en/products/iconic-masters you get not authorized. If you type in anything that's not an actual product you get sent to the list page, so there is definitely something by name coming out.
I'm guessing this is the new name for From The Vault as opposed to a Modern Masters type set.
Anything with Masters at the end of it is free money with little to no effort on behalf of WOTC so it makes sense to me that they would keep shelling out this garbage.
The name having the Masters branding should lead us to believe this isn't a re-branded "From the Vault" set, but instead will be a Modern Masters/Eternal Masters type set, right?
Yeah, "Masters" has long indicated a draftable set. The first Masters Edition online came out in 2007, and since then, it's had 3 direct sequels, plus Vintage Masters and Tempest Remastered, and that's just online. Paper has had three Modern Masters editions plus Eternal Masters. It's possible this is a replacement product for the FTV line, which has been flagging for years, but I don't believe it could be just a rebranding of FTV.
The big question to me is not "is this a draftable set?", but rather "What makes 'Iconic' different from 'Eternal'?" "Iconic" is used as a term frequently by MaRo, to indicate the distinctive large creature types of each color - Angels, Demons, Dragons, Sphinxes, and Hydras. But it'd be extremely difficult to build a set around just those types, so that's probably the wrong line of thinking. There's also the classic definition of Iconic, but that implies to me a lot of stuff like Power Nine and Duals which are on the Reserved List and ergo ineligible for reprint, barring a major and unexpected change.

seems pretty interesting, I'm excited to see what they'll include. I'm also interested to see what will make it different from eternal masters and modern masters sets
my guess would be that iconic masters is a set where you can draft archetypes of iconic decks from the past/recent or older. maybe you can draft burn, and they include cards like lightning bolt, eidolon of the great revel, or vexing devil as examples. then throw in some of the best decks froms standards and moderns past. Right now they really just put chase modern cards in with fodder to make a deck. Maybe this is more specific to top tier decks of the past, and they put in all the cards from those decks. There is bound to be overlap cards between decks, so it wouldn't be overly clogged, and could be a normal sized set. Not sure they would ever do this, but it would be kinda neat
Ugh, enough with the Masters sets. Modern Masters 2017 had some much needed reprints, but this sounds like it'll be WAY closer to Eternal Masters, which is like throwing your money away unless you find a few major cash cards.

I didn't think anyone could be more cynical about Wizards/Hasbro than me but even I think it's a tiny bit premature to make a judgment about how this is going to suck based on just the name. Iconic Masters could mean almost anything, the only thing we can safely deduce is that it will probably contain reprints of some kind.
I'm assuming this is an "Eternal Masters" set that did not want to be forced to reprint high-value cards. Modern Masters and Eternal Masters can't be printed unless they offer the chance for $100 mythics or $60 rares, so in order to make a draft set utilizing classic cards that is designed for fun or flavor and wants to ignore price, they need a new name for it. With any luck (not that it will ever happen), Iconic Masters will also allow printing new cards, so we can get cards for the iconic heroes of old that never got them and maybe even remakes of the ones who did. I would love a Gerrard that had the right color identity to play the rest of the Weatherlight crew (just as an example).
codenamejd asked: Could we ever see a Commander focused set designed for draft? My friends and I exclusively play Commander and limited, so something like this would be our favourite set ever
I guess I could ask.
Are you are interested in a Commander product geared towards draft?

I feel like you hit the nail on the head there. It's all making sense now why this year's MM release was moved from its typical Summer release to March this year.
honestly, when i think of iconic i don't really think of enough cards to make a competently draftable set. iconic tends to be a few things, not a great many things. so as for speculation, i'm betting its not going to be a draftable set and more of something not quite like ftv but similar.
I know it has Masters in the title, but the release date, if correct (November), tells me that this might not be a draftable set. Instead, this could be the return of the gold-bordered signed card decks they made for the world champion deck series. In this respect, the iconic masters would be the World Champions themselves plus some well known cards they played in their decks.
If this was a masters set like the ones before, this could as well be just eternal masters 2 - wouldn't make much sense to get expectations up by labeling it 'iconic', just to do another draft-focussed set with some gems in it.
So, if it's really iconic cards only, would it make sense to do this as booster-based product? Prices might get absolutely ridiculous.
Seems plausible to expect a new FTV-like product, probably with some added extra.
I'm SO SICK of the "too strong for Standard" argument. It's the new "Dies to removal". We can have a two mana 4/4 with a zillion abilities, but we can't just have Accumulated Knowledge. Makes sense.
The most probable explanation for not naming it Eternal Masters is that Eternal Masters only contained non modern-legal cards and this could have legal cards from any expansion without restrictions.

Lol, this doesn't make any sense. Eternal had some Modern cards (non-banned) as well.

But eternal masters *had* modern legal cards. Wrath of God, Isochron Scepter, Call the Skybreaker, Eight-and-a-Half Tails...
I wonder if this might be WoTC's attempt to get around the reserved list to breather life into Legacy. What if it had close versions of reserved cards like Snow dual lands. Something like a Snow Taiga that said it couldn't be played in the same deck as a taiga. That way it would get around the reserved list but would be only legacy legal and players would get access to cards that were needed to be able to keep legacy alive.
