You know what, this isn't what I expected but its pretty damn good.
I think there is a piece of the puzzle missing, I think there will be a bit of a "Discovering lost / hidden knowledge" theme, Think the Dragon words from Skyrim and this look and feel
makes sense. Bolas has ruled here for eons and has stored powerful invocations in the secret places.
I still want to see how good they look foiled. (that was a big part of what made the inventions work) but I think it is overall a more consistent look then the Expedition lands.
It also makes me think that this won't just be a novelty they use to do a vague premium treatment of powerful cards. We could see them do anything / take risks etc.
I mean the biggest conversation point before this was lands check, artefacts check, I guess its instants, sorceries then creatures next.
If you bring a magnifying glass towards these MPs, I'm sure Wizards will say you're embracing the very nature of studying hieroglyphs.
C'mon folks... It's pretty legible. Plus, most of us are already familiar with iconic cards already.
It's a collectors' item. Nobody collects Masterpieces of Dead Ringers; why would Wizards ever choose a card like that? Collectors' items are usually nothing but historic cards.
But if anyone complains about the size of the art, sure, I'm on board with you.
Lastly, don't expect all MPs to look the same from different blocks. Where's the beauty in that?
For those who can't see why they're difficult to read. Here's a simulation of these cards in bad lighting, seeing them from a distance.
See if either of these is easier to read than the other.
Okay, I'm all in the camp of this being a terrible hard to read font, but your test is highly questionable unless you make sure beforehand you have equal quality scans of both cards - the resolution before blurring on the already released card is likely higher skewing the results of this test.
EDIT: On the other hand the title gets easier to read with the symbols not corresponding to letters being less visible... ^^

[thread=239793][Game] Level Up - Creature[/thread]
Wow, aren't these borders ugly. Am I really supposed to be hyped about premium rare pieces of cardboard that at first glance look nothing at all like Magic cards?
I just realized something. For all the moaning people are doing, the chance is high that they will rarely see them. I'm not sure what the big deal is. They aren't in all the packs or anything.
Depends, some players will seek out those cards because they may add character to their deck. I do think counterbalance and force of will are going to be hot hot hot!
Really the problem with the cards is that they're inelegant at best, ugly at worst. Legibility issues of hyper rare but very well known cards is not going to be a thing. I understand the look they were going for but they pushed it too far.
The frame should have been thinner, its colors less saturated and the pseudo-hieroglyphic should not have been a thing. The result would have still looked egyptian and nice and stood out without being an eyesore.
We are seeing the cards from a monitor perspective; I believe the cards are foil and that will effect the appearance of the physical card.
I kinda like them, it will add a bit of variety for my cube if I ever get my hands on one. Assuming they print the new Gods this way they could look great and flavourful. I like that wizards are happy to push the boat out for things like this; they aren't for everyone but the people who like them will adore them.

C'mon folks... It's pretty legible. Plus, most of us are already familiar with iconic cards already.
It's not easily legible though. The card name can be found in that string of wingdings, but it takes a good 5 seconds. The type line is an even bigger mess.
I may know what a certain card does, but I first need to know what the card is.
It would have been better to make textless full art cards.
or alternatively, names in english, and the text in hieroglyphics.

Nobody should care about the legibility for a highly-rare, highly-stylised promo. Consider it akin to the textless cards, it's there purely for bling value, nothing else.
It does sort of beg the question; why bother with rules text at all? Full art invocations would be better received, I think most people would agree on this?
But regardless, these have really grown on me over the course of the day, and glancing back at them a few times. First reaction was "huh!...." and no real emotional response either way. Subsequent reactions have grown to "man these are actually pretty cool".
Bravo for trying something new? They really went all out for style points this time.

You can easily distinguish the name of a textless card. You cannot easily distinguish the name of these cards. Aside from any other concerns I have with the aesthetics, this is my problem.
Basically these cards are saying memorize the card art if you want to easily know what this thing does.

Totally agree...
I'm always pleased when wizards reprint expensive staples and randomly insert them in booster packs - it sort of turns the magic booster packs into lotto tickets.
Everybody seemed to be *****ing about ugly face cards... But pay a 4 dollar booster pack and pull a +$100 Force of Will, the *****ing ends.
And I also believe the graphics on these cards are going to look different in physical form.

Or maybe the players in the game could, y'know, announce their spells and talk to each other like human beings?
And who doesn't play by recognising the art from their opponents' cards? If I want to read something word-by-word I ask to see the card. This is normal play, as far as I have seen from players worldwide since the beginning of magic. I've got great vision and thankfully can read upside-down just as fluently as normally oriented (it's part of my job haha), but I recognise that most people just remember what cards do, and evaluate board-states by processing cards in a generalised visual way, incorporating the art as part of the card's identity.
So I guess your qualm is based on an annoyance of having to remember a handful of extra cards, or ask to see cards belonging to your opponent during a game. Does this also mean you find a similar level of annoyance every time a new set comes out? I could be wrong, but that's what it appears to mean.

Except that you have them as pop-out image for years on every website when you link these !very popular! cards that aren't likely to get reprinted elsewhere soon because they are "too good for standard". I would guess you can't read anything on them when linked that way, since the image is even smaller. This will bug me the most. Want to link Dark Ritual? Boom, sh**** hieroglyphs. Consecrated Sphinx for EDH? Boom, ineligible text plus a nice artwork of a sphinx. Very helpful for new players who might not know these.
They're not even that hard to read. =/ I really don't see the problem.
People are telling you that they find them hard to read. I promise you they aren't lying to you.
So, I made the art larger (without making it full art) at the cost of the "3D effect" that I couldn't really feel from the images to begin with, giving me the impression of a bar of wasted space between name line and the art instead of a zooming in of the art.
I darkened the text that's supposed to be readable on the name and typeline and also colored the mana symbols using colors available in the art/frame.
Excuse the quality - there isn't much to expect from a 5 minute job on Paint (just visualize a better quality version mentally).
So, how would it have been to you had the Invocations looked liked this instead? Just interested in hearing opinions considering the actual prints are rather polarizing. Does this ruin the aesthetic too much, or does it feel like an acceptable solution to the problems people might face?

I agree with you. In fact, I don't understand why people are so up in arms by cards that they most likely will rarely if ever see, and on top of that, it's only 16 extra cards. Cards that aren't even new, on top of that. If you are a Magic player, you will have memorized many times that amount of cards before.
People are telling you that they find them hard to read. I promise you they aren't lying to you.
No, I believe them. I just don't see them not seeing it. *badumtsh*
I play mostly legacy. I will be seeing these cards all the time. There is a bit of frustration that I have regarding how frequently these cards will be seen. Considering how polarizing they are, there is a definitive psychological advantage to using them in tournaments.

You must have amazing sight or be ancient Egyptian. It's about the title and type bar btw, not the rules text.
That type line is extremely hard to read, unless you hold still and really focus.
Surrounding difficult to read letters with irrelevant glyphs makes these hard to read from a distance, upside down etc.

The fact that they are hated won't make them cheaper, they are still as rare as the other Masterpieces
But I do think the hate for the art/text is real. It's divisive for sure.
