I mean, if silence makes a sound, as Disturbed suggests in their song
This makes me want to cry.
You know they didn't write that song, yes?
Wow, how did I **** that up? In my defense, I don't listen to much Simon & Garfunkel or Disturbed, and it has been ages since I last listened to either version; I just linked to the first thing Youtube showed me. Still, though. I am ashamed. Fixing my post, now.
lol this thread is frickin hilarious quality content, pure quality
You wanna know the dumbest thing? I should be more familiar with the Simon & Garfunkel version. My dad has it on CD, and I must have heard it about a million times in my youth. But nooooo, I was in such a hurry to make my oh-so-witty comment that I, apparently, went braindead.
Turning those Cancels into strictly better Counterspells. NICE!
And turning Counterspell into a cantrip as well. In Commander, he basically turns your Dismiss into a Cancel that's also a Divination.
My only issue is that this becomes one of those "state-based actions and Archive Trap aren't the same as countering". Because I remember Cobra Trap and explaining "Tribute to the Wild/Revoke Existence doesn't destroy." many times.

Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!
Preordering cards? I used to preorder cards but then I decided that if I want to gamble with my money I will go to a casino. At least at the casino I can also get a double scotch, neat, while I throw my money away.
You're assuming people pre-order in order to try and use Magic like the stock market. I pre-order cards that I want for my decks that may not be available later or may rise to a price that is out of my budget.

You don't call "dying to removal" if the removal is more expensive in resources than the creature. If you have to spend BG (Abrupt Decay), or W + basic land (PtE) to remove a 1G, that is not "dying to removal". Strictly speaking Goyf dies to removal, but actually your removal is dying to Goyf.

As long as Baral isn't being priced like Chandra was at pre-order I may pick him up. Otherwise waiting for release is a better plan since the price will dip some before the promotional tour. You can sometimes get lucky if you shotgun things during pre-order season and it's a set with completely untested mechanics like Kaladesh was, though.
Right now it's probably better to be focusing on getting the cards that are already released. There's good prices on kaladesh right now and tons of cards from older sets like Kahns are starting to climb. Pre-order cards have no direction to go but down, really, except for maybe 5 or 6 of them.

No, I was merely being tongue-in-cheek about it. I preorder cards from time to time when there are some that I think I should get right away or when the general consensus from many different voices is that a card is going to run away with a format. I preordered Liliana and won that lottery; I also preordered Kozilek's Return and lost. *shrug*

Yes, but at the casino they generally require one to wear pants. Unacceptable!
This guy seems pretty good, will he create a revival for blue control in Modern?
I almost feel like this is the Snapcaster Mage in this set, not just in Mana cost, but maybe in popularity too
I think Wizards are confident it wouldn't mess up Standard. Spell cost reduction only messes up when Storm is involved. Otherwise I don't think it's even a big issue. Besides, he's legendary. Safe as a condom.
Holy crap, you're right U: bounce a spell and get a FREE Catalog This guy deserves a try in a Jeskai Tesla Coil deck. The 3 toughness really helps this card, it won't die to the first Galvanic Bombardment and it's also Shockproof. The potential is there.

The problem is: Remand is only playable in Modern. And in Modern there is Lightning Bolt. So Shockproof might not be that relevant. But if you play this, you just need to leave one U open and the craziness can happen. Also lowers the cost of Disallow. Or Mana Leak.
And that's why I mentioned Bombardment and Shock after the Jeskai Dynavolt Tower decks in Standard. I wasn't talking about Modern as there's Bolt there, and as far as I know there are no straight-up permission decks in Modern, maybe Baral can give them a chance but I don't know.
The only thing I got to say about Baral is that his second ability to loot is not the reason someone should play him. If someone plays him, they should be aiming for that discount on sorceries and instants in general. Also, his ability requires an actual counterspell, so things like Spell Queller, which exile cards don't trigger his loot ability.
My guess is that right now the stores are pricing him high on pre-order because they are speccing on UW flash or something picking up the card. If anything the most powerful card out of the group looks to be Sram, Senior Edificer. With all the 0 cost equipment he basically lets you dump your hand turn 2 and refill on equip targets. Not to mention that equipment doesn't care if it's tapped or not, meaning things like Herald of Anguish are much better than they look. You basically have plan B for winning in an equipment based deck right there. I've been toying with the deck and in playtesting it's really not that hard to cast it for 3 or 4.
Baral feels like he is great in a tempo deck, especially with his expertise card. I'm just not sure what deck to fit him into despite how cool he is. In a lot of ways he is reminding me of Chandra, torch of defiance during her pre-order season, albeit way better priced at least. Still don't see him going above 5 usd unless he is the next Smuggler's Copter.

Double-check the card. "Whenever a spell or ability you control counters a spell, you may draw a card. If you do, discard a card." Your Spell Queller's ability will trigger Baral's loot ability but.

Spell queller doesn't counter spells. It exiles. That's why it can get rid of a pesky abrupt decay whereas spell snare can't.
So queller doesn't trigger the loot ability I'm afraid.

I was half-asleep in bed last night when I realized my error--it exiles, not counters. *laugh* *shrug* It isn't the first time I have been wrong and it certainly won't be the last. Oh, well. I stand corrected--no worries.
