Nice. Seems like a fun option for a mono blue commander. Not as oppressive as azami, and more spelltacular than talrand. I might give this a try as a commander soon.
Baral did not disappoint, and I'm surprised that he's a two drop with great abilities.
Aether Revolt keeps hitting the mark with great card designs and decent rarities for them.
When you have this card in play and you cast remand, countering a spell, do you draw from remand and then decide if you loot, or decide if you want to loot then draw from remand, or do you get to decide which order to do them in?
I believe you will draw from Remand first since that draw happens when Remand resolves and counters a spell, which then triggers Baral's loot ability.
Goblin Electromancer was just a few years ago, this really pushes the envelope. Looting is great, being mono-U is better. It means he can go nutty in any color control shells like UW instead of just the restrictive izzet combinations, and when theres some relevant control spells with colorless mana to spare like declaration in stone, it has a chance. But on the other hand, wizards have pushed this standard environment to be spells-on-sticks like spell queller, reflector mage, etc, and there still pushed removal ala stasis snare this doesn't work on.
So you can play 8 electromancers now? That's worth looking into.
You could have 8 in your deck, but keep in mind this guy is Legendary - you can't have 2 of these in play at the same time.
It's more of the added consistency Baral brings to the Storm deck; 8 copies of a two drop with a reduction ability has a greater chance to show up in your opening hand.
As a comparison, ppl are already testing Sram, Senior Edificer in the Puresteel Paladin decks and are reporting that Sram's addition is putting up good results, even with Sram's legendary status. The main issue was landing a two drop on turn one(Mox Opal)/two. All they needed was another two drop similar to the Paladin to greatly increase consistency.
I think the right play is to go with 4 copies of this guy in a modern shell.
You want him out early, and out consistently, if he gets removed, you want another one, and if you don't need more, you can loot them away from your hand or just Think Twice extremely cheaply and carry on.
I dislike playing against blue but recognize it's bad that blue control players don't have real representation in modern, and that it boosts extremely linear decks, making it more of a sideboard format.
This may be really healthy.
However it may also be one of those cards that provide too much power for the already powerful linear decks.
I like the possible interaction with Jace but is there enough room for 8 bodies in something that needs to end up looking like Deliver or Young Pyro builds? And maybe more like10-12 bodies with a wince beyond Basal and Jace
@Spehon: I'm pretty sure this card isn't going to break modern control. Maybe it will spawn an overpowered combo-deck, but that probably won't happen either.
Break modern control? You mean break into modern control, right?
I wouldn't have pegged him as a monoblue. He seemed too petty and sadistic not to be part black or red. But then again being blue doesn't make you an emotionless robot.
The background has a neat FFVII Mako Reactor vibe going on. Now we need a blonde spiky-haired Mercenary with a big sword, a Rebel with a cannon on his arm, and a busty Monk.
MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.

I mean, if silence makes a sound, as Disturbed suggests in their song
This makes me want to cry.
You know they didn't write that song, yes?
Wow, how did I **** that up? In my defense, I don't listen to much Simon & Garfunkel or Disturbed, and it has been ages since I last listened to either version; I just linked to the first thing Youtube showed me. Still, though. I am ashamed. Fixing my post, now.

The true mind can weather all the lies and illusions without being lost. The true heart can tough the poison of hatred without being harmed. Since beginning-less time, darkness thrives in the void but always yields to purifying light.
I invision a future where one is not mighty when he can silence a crowd with brutality,
but when he leaves them speechless with wisdom.
So I've been camping the SCG single page for the card, seeing occassional 4's being bought until it got to 27 remaining and then boom - either someone bought them all out, or SCG pulled the stock to withhold for hype.
Most of the interest so far seems to just be for modern storm where it replaces Goblin Electromancer/gets run as copies #4-8
You don't call "dying to removal" if the removal is more expensive in resources than the creature. If you have to spend BG (Abrupt Decay), or W + basic land (PtE) to remove a 1G, that is not "dying to removal". Strictly speaking Goyf dies to removal, but actually your removal is dying to Goyf.
Preordering cards? I used to preorder cards but then I decided that if I want to gamble with my money I will go to a casino. At least at the casino I can also get a double scotch, neat, while I throw my money away.

Also, his cost reduction effect turns Disallow into a Counterspell with free added Stifle.

I'm liking this card. Probable will get a copy for my EDH. Been looking for a mono-blue legendary like this for awhile. Plus a wizard to boot.

Keep in mind, a big part of the value of Jace's looting is how his backside can use the discarded cards later.
That said, Baral is still a very strong card.
