I get the impression they intentionally made it kind of ugly
to make people want the Masterpiece version more.
Meanwhile I think this is the best art on any card in a few years =)
To be fair, I do really like the scene/background,
I just feel like the Ornithopter itself looks flat and cartoonish by comparison.
It also looks oddly floppy, but maybe that was intentional?
Think "kite".
Notice how the individual in the back is looking down at the child? The dude in the foreground appears to be dodging the thopter? And lastly, the child is holding a string that appears to loop back to the thopter? This a toy. A whimsical play thing probably built "floppy" to avoid harm ( though any society that looks at a runaway train in an almost casual manner probably doesn't give a flip about safety) or as cheaply made or, more likely, made using the lightest materials possible. This keeps it in line with the 0/1 P/T. Perfectly harmless and only worthy of a casual glance... or in the case of the bearded dude, dodging out of its way.
All it needs now is a tree filled with these things and a sad bald headed kid looking up at them.
This might actually be my favorite art of all Ornithopters out there, simply because of the background. All the other ones don't depict it in "common use" (well the original blueprint one might infer that, but it could have the other way by inference as well). The guy who looks surprised dodging probably wasn't paying attention while walking until the last second and (to me, at least) is telling us that walking head-on into 1 is still going to hurt (just not really injure you), if we assume that guy is 1/1 in stats. The wings do look floppy (and Floppy is now this version's nickname for me), but at least there's a metal/etherium core and that hitting your face isn't going to be pleasant.
Much better than the Masterpiece one, which looks like Tezzeret's prized pet dragonfly in some isolated hallway that no one dares intrude upon (because Tezzeret has a lousy temper).
