Sam Stoddard's article...needs an editor in a hurry. "Horde" for "hoard" several times, "devign" for "design". Makes it nearly unreadble. Glad to see Wind Drake is back for Limited though.
Horde would be a typo, but Devign is a Wizards R&D term for the period where Design and Development are working on the set at the same time.
Interesting that Indestructible is been more prominent on black. I guess sicne regerate is practically dead black needs something more defensive to fit the ccolor of master over death after all.
Is it just me, or Night Market Lookout is one of the most pushed one-drop commons we had in years? 1/1 that drains 1 whenever it swings? It's pretty much a Thornbow Archer that lacks the mirror match drawback and drains instead of just dealing, at the cost of a single point of toughness. And that card was really not bad at all in Origins. Not to mention the massive Vehicle synergy.
Veteran Motorist also seems pretty solid. 3/1 for WR with a scry 2 stapled on is already gravy, but the bonus on Vehicle crewing just pushes it over the top. Seems Standard playable if Vehicles become a thing.
Also note the lack of Regeneration in Kaladesh. In fact, Black just got a card that gives creatures Indestructible, which seems like a huge color pie shift. Is Regeneration officially out of evergreen territory?
Overall, plenty of cool stuff. I'm likin' it a lot.
Gotta say, this set has me the least excited since I started playing (RTR). I guess the mechanics don't appeal to me.
Fabricate should always be for creature tokens, if you use it for counters it's probably since you are already in trouble, also the cards seem balanced around the tokens, not the counters. Crew reminds me of Outlast, at least it is stronger than that. Energy is very cool and the most enticing for me to build a deck, yet most cards only produce enough energy for 1-2 uses of their own, trying to use the energy from one card on another makes the first one useless. The best way to produce energy seems landfall/token, both of which are kinda slow and force you in your deck building quite a bit. Will need quite a bit of goldfishing to find an energy deck I like.
That said, I'll be making a R/W commander deck out of this.
I love the art of Harsh Scrutiny, mostly because of that giant eyeball thing.
Nature's Way is rather strong for limited. When was the last time a green instant/sorcery gave vigilance?
Self-Assembler is looking like we are getting some assembly-worker love in the next set. Not to mention last time we saw an assembly-worker was Time Spiral, and then nothing before that without it being a manland or a token made form a land. Maybe we'll finally get that 2/2 Assembly-Worker token we've been missing, since forever.
Veteran Motorist also seems pretty solid. 3/1 for WR with a scry 2 stapled on is already gravy, but the bonus on Vehicle crewing just pushes it over the top. Seems Standard playable if Vehicles become a thing.
Not to mention how well it synergizes with Depala, Pilot Exemplar. My RW vehicle aggro deck is looking better and better.
Will probably have more lengthy thoughts later, but for now, I’m just amused by the mechanical/flavor interaction between Built to Last and Abrupt Decay.

Hazardous Conditions is interesting the way it is worded--"creatures with no counters on them get -2/-2 until end of turn". Creatures which already have a -1/-1 counter on them from wither or infect will not get the -2/-2 effect.
I really like this set. It's powerlevel is well balanced. It has some goods for eternal and for standard and Commander. I also love the art direction. Great to see they ditched the super high res photoshop look of BFZ. The art feels fresh and vibrant.
Gearseeker Serpent might be my favorite card from the set. Great art, puny flavor text and also a rather good card. It might also be the first serpent with only upsides.

I will be sitting this one out. I haven't actively disliked a set since Lorwyn, but enough is far too much. Veteran Motorist is now a Magic card. What's next, Bored Traffic Cop? Angry Drunk Driver? A set called Magic: the New Yorkening? New, playable cards are always wonderful, but for me, the flavor in this set is a huge fail.

Artifact plane-Artifacts on plane? Check.
Central story is inventors fair-artificers? Check.
Now, put the two together, artifact-inventions(new, never seen before, Billy Mays-esque "But wait, there's more!")-Vehicles, gear hulks, constructs. Check and double check.
I'm not sure if it was spoiled before, but Consul's Shieldguard is awesome. 4 mana for a 3/4 is already decent in Limited and a 3/4 that makes other attackers indestructible is definitely going to be a high pick.
I agree. Michael Pena approves of that card. I immediately thought it looked like him when I saw the art. Love it!

To each their own, I guess. I prefer it when Magic switches things up, and isn't just all Tolkien all the time.

Well, I'm gonna go "meh" on this one. It's not that the set is bad, it most definitely isn't. I just don't enjoy the aesthetics of vehicles and pilots and all that jazz. Not to mention energy counters. Mechanic is just fine, but the new pictures on cards? Not my cup of tea. There are quite a few cards for my casual cube in the making and commander decks, though. I'm just happy for all of you who actually like the set as a whole.
One more thing: Revolutionary Rebuff. You all seem to like it. Why? I started playing back when Counterspell was a thing. Mana Leal is a perfectly fine common for both limited and constructed. Was it really necessary to nerf it this much?

Also... they're article about what notable cards were rotating was pretty amusing

How is this even remotely close to a flavor fail?
I agree. Michael Pena approves of that card. I immediately thought it looked like him when I saw the art. Love it!
But I will help get a Emrakul though.
