I'm not entirely sold on it myself, as the spell is limited to creature damage. If this had been the new Lightning Strike I would have been a lot more pumped. Creature damage is good mind you, when you have a Gearhulk barreling down on you, but as a Burn player this spell falls flat.
While true, I think that Harnessed Lightning is actually closer to Skred than anything else. Higher floor, lower ceiling, but that's its job. Not burn per se.
I like Harnessed Lighting 'as a card,' but for constructed right now I would rather have a spell that hits players. I'm hoping that Searing Spear will be the "signature common" in Chandra's Planeswalker Deck
I'm hoping control gets some love in the final spoilers of pack. So far all controlling cards are very lackluster: 1) live fast seems a worse divination since no good control energy spells have been spoiled (and, mind you, divination is a fringe playable in constructed), 2) die young suffers alot from being a sorcery 3) morbid curiousity could be a big draw spell, but it suffers from being a sorcery again. Control looses quite a bit with the rotation of VP Jace, languish, I'll even miss clash of wills as a way to keep above water Turns 2-4.
I want 3 things form this set: 1) A big, efficient, instant speed card drawer (look, 'm not asking for sphinx's revelation, but something better than scour the laboratory has to exist) 2) a 4 mana conditional wrath a-la languish (an unconditional wrath would be better, but we know it won't happen) 3) some efficient counterspells (or, at least, as efficient as can be expected in the 2000s...). Ceremonious rejection is very meh, as it seems too prone to be stranded in hand. So far, I'm hoping for better...
I like that searing spear is 'too good' now. Like, seriously WotC? Anything other than creatures can be too good, and even 1 mana mana dorks are 'too good'. When does it end?

Shh! We don't know that yet! I'm trying not to get my hopes up over here, quit making it more difficult!
Must be the time-zone difference then. Because I had already seen it on stream

Metallurgic sumons makesme happy a certain command is rotating out! Not sure if it'll be good enough (5 mana sorcery speed spell that does nothing ETB is very risky), but the upside is great: just sit back behind a wall of counters and removal, and get an x/x. Then, regrow 6 spells (at instant speed). Seems like it'll have to be at least tested.

Harnessed Lightning is not worse than Searing Spear. Even if you have no other cards that use energy, they still synergize with each other. If you kill a 1 or -toughness creature with the first Harnessed Lightning, you can use the energy counters for the next one to take out a larger creature.
Well, yeah burning the face is actually crucial to red's playstyle. They're at 3 or less life? Oops killed you with a 2 mana spell. THAT'S powerful as hell, winning the game for 2 mana. Topdeck this when they're at 3 or less? Well, we can't kill your biggest threat due to lack of energy because a lot of stuff uses energy, but we can take out your little dork. Neat. Yes, the card is playable and will see play. But better? Usually spear will be better because it's more consistent and can just kill people.

Morbid Curiosity would be insane as an instant, probably making it into modern(sac response to trying to path Tasigur!!!). Even at sorcery, the nice thing is tho the sacrifice is part of the cost so the Opp can't just kill it in response. Seams good in a Control type deck or if they print a really good artifact with limited uses.
Only really helpful if you have something like Warstorm Surge or something that triggers when a creature ETBs.
In Modern there are pretty cheap enablers like Altar of the Brood and Impact Tremors that even work through Hexproof effects like Leyline of Sanctity and are just as good in multi-player, effecting all opponents at once.
Once Kaladesh is out and Origins/Dragons rotates there is a grand total of two cards from BFZ and SOI block that can go infinite with this combo in Standard, you can use Pious Evangel for as much life as you want, or Sanctifier of Souls for as big of a creature you could want (unfortunately it has no evasion).
So far the only Kaladesh card that this goes infinite with is Panharmonicon, which gives you infinite creature flickering to abuse ETB effects.
The problem with defining this format by what is "fun" is that everyone seems to define fun as what they don't lose to. If you keep losing to easily answered cards, that means you should improve your deck. If you don't want to improve your deck, then you should come to peace with the idea that you are going to lose because you chose to not interact with better strategies.
Arborback Stomper makes me think that red or black will have some sort of punisher card for all the lifegain going around. I love the card itself though, sideboard against aggro decks in stompy.
Preview cards were sweet but man was this hard to watch. The MTA girls are straight annoying and the cheat gimmick was stupid. Just let them play magic with surprise preview cards.

The Closing ceremony spoilers are being covered in another thread, which is why they aren't being posted here.
Standard - Some kind of control
Modern - UB Mill (casual)
EDH - Meren's Grave Shenanigans

I think the flexibility/synergy pushes it past searing spear, but some people just want to see target player burn.
Feel free to tell me yours!
