I don't mind the spoilers on third party sites and the slowness of spoilers. What I mind (and always had) is the fact that Wizards reveal the last 100 or so cards in one day, creating this huge info dump.
This is the part that annoys me most as well. There are exactly half the set that is left unknown until literally a week before the prerelease. Often the cards I care about are in the 100 unrevealed cards. I much MUCH prefer the days when there were enough unofficial leaks that we know the whole set two-three weeks out (even before Wizards releases the full spoiler)
I would rather them release more cards each week so that all 100 are previewed before the official spoiler goes up. Combine cards so you preview a bunch in an article (that's what they used to do) I would love it if every single day I saw at least 1 card that made me intrigued with the set - rather than one every 3 days (and the rest I don't care about)
And, most of all, I want to see the commons and uncommons in a set before I see the rares. I remember the first few days all we were seeing were the rares and mythic rares. IOW - cards I am very unlikely to see in the Prerelease and don't get me excited since I probably won't be able to afford them on my budget.

I too wish Wizards would spoil more commons and uncommons to give a more accurate picture of what the limited format will look like - they can spoil them in article alongside the other cards to give more of a taste of the flavor of the world so the art and flavor they put so much work into doesn't get swallowed up when scrolling through dozens of cards.
Ditto on the weekend thing - I understand that the editors need rest, but would it really be that hard three or four times a year to post an article or two on the weekend? If nothing else they can outsource it to other websites that would be excited to get some sweet spoilers.

It has little or nothing to do with rest. I guarantee you those articles are written a week in advance and slated to be posted on a timer. You'll note articles still came up on July 4th (Independance Day) 100% guarntee that's a stat holiday and Wizards was closed. Even MaRo didn't miss his 'Making Magic' Monday.
No reason they can't have writers write articles for the weekend on spoiler seasons (Other than it'd cost money to hire them.)

It's spelled "discussion". What is with people on this site not knowing how to spell? I've seen a lot of people misspell "delirium" as "delerium". When you post, make sure you google it so it can tell you the correct spelling if you're not sure how to spell it.
I've been coming here for a long, long time, since the previous site. Been an age since I posted. Used to actually write for the magazines back in the day. Perhaps I'm missing something or ignorant, but is there a reason one of the most highly trafficked websites about MTG, MTG Salvation, doesn't get a preview card? I thought it did once or twice, and its been a long time since RE had the issue, so I'm just wondering why this site doesn't get that love?
I just wanted to say that this was the most beautiful thing Ive read on spoilers.

I am trying to get better at making decks. I have had trouble creating more competitive decks as I only really build with the cards I have. I dont have that many value cards, in function or expense. I (almost) never play at FNM type events so its not like im playing against $2k decks. If I do usally play at one, Its a draft or limited game. Any advice on building decks is greatly supported! The RE thing is still an issue, I suppose. And it was just the stick they had found to beat us. A lot of the unofficial spoilers came through here. And we never really cooperated to reveil our sources. Fair enough, they have gotten a lot better in what they are doing. Unofficial spoilers are hardly a thing anymore. We've never had an official one, I think.
I agree that getting a giant dump of half of the set at one sucks but I like that the set finishes being spoiled close to the prerelease date. Couldn't they just give each spoiler article one or two more cards? They may still have to do a small dump (10-20 cards?) on the final day depending on how the numbers all shake out. But it would be possible to spread the info out a little more.

I think the reasoning behind this is that they want to tease out cards in order to build hype. The more cards released at once, the less focus around individual cards, which is important for WotC in order to highlight the big cards of the set.
Honestly, what I am happy about is that there are less and less truely spoiled cards. NDAs actually seem to be working now.

I got a feeling it's less to do with NDAs and more due to how weak the market is on modern and standard. People can pick up singles right now for dirt cheap when it comes to those formats on top of the really low costs on the stuff that just rotated. I was totally expecting the marketing to go full on out for the next set as after X-mas things get really hard to move. I can't imagine people getting hyped enough to buy booster boxes off of what has been shown so far, but maybe WoTC feels the same way so they are just doing this really slow trickle thing?

Sometimes wizards just want to spoil products to see people reaction to that. It is very hard to plan everything 3 years in front of you. I do not believe in leaks. They are all made by wizards.
If everything is planned out in advance why did WOTC sue the pants off Rancored Elf?
Answer it isn't planned out in advance and there are some things that WOTC would dearly like to keep secret and unfortunately assorted people like the aforementioned Elf have managed to get hold of them and disseminated them on various sites, historically this one. And in the case of the Elf and a couple of others they have paid the price in a number of ways in the form of lawsuits and atleast 1 spoiler hunter has had his DCI number suspended for life due to his actions.

Wizards spoiler policy, as of now, appears to be this:
Release a handful of cards four weeks out from release
Spoiler articles on Mothership and spoiler cards on partner sites three weeks and two weeks out from release
Full spoiler released two Fridays before release
Unofficial spoilers are terrible, awful, no good, very bad
I like how it used to be:
MTGN (and later for a short time, MTGS) posts the entire spoiler 6 weeks before the release, after about 2 months of slowly discovering new cards, piecing together hints, and trying to figure out if "leaks" are legit or fakes. A lot of hype built up and the community was huge and strong.

I think this worked better when it was harder to make good looking fake cards and "mtg finance"/"investors" didn't have such a choke hold on the game. There's such a potential loss of money to someone somewhere now over leaks and rumors because of the rise in popularity of the game that leaked info is more of a liability, now. I remember Gold Mage and Topher being some of the most notorious fakers that threw the community into an uproar. When people found out Topher's poster was a fake, it was a real let down and punch in the gut to a lot of people, and the nature of the rumor mill/season made it really easy to be those people. Then we had the real rumored cards that got miscommunicated at times like when we were told Moonlight Bargain was 2BB rather than it's real cost of 3BB. People spend money or invest off of early information because everyone wants an edge or they get hyped, and even though the Rumor Mill always came with the caveat that you should take everything with a grain of salt, there was a certain level of reliability for so long that everyone started to assume they were safe. But with how people play the market now, players suffer if good cards are spoiled early. Up until preview season we were able to preorder Modern Masters 2017 for $180 USD. By the time the first week of previews were done, preorder prices were jumping up to $230-250 to MSRP or above. If we had Snapcaster or Liliana of the Veil leak 2 months early, investors and the market would have began speculating on the rest of the set and started jacking up prices super early and the buyouts on cards like Karn Liberated would've began even earlier (after the full set was spoiled he wasn't in it, he jumped from $30 to 65-70 over night because of buyouts). I miss the days of coming to the Rumor Mill and there actually being Rumors or bits and pieces of information to be hyped up on, but I think that information can be used against regular players these days. I don't like it, but it is what it is. Having limited scope official preview windows are the closest thing we have to fairness in the market, now, because speculators have as little info as we do until Wizards informs us all at the same time.
What irks me above all else is the fact that they spoil mythics and rares. Then, once the season starts going, you know you're left with the jank and pile and the rank and file. All the bombs have been spoiled and everything that follows is just major meh.
I understand why wizards does it. I just don't like that they do it that way.
I'd be okay with them spoiling the mythics and rares first if the uncommons weren't 99% garbage. That said, AER had more than 1 playable uncommon so there's hope in that regard.
I don't mind the spoilers on third party sites and the slowness of spoilers. What I mind (and always had) is the fact that Wizards reveal the last 100 or so cards in one day, creating this huge info dump.
The thing that drives me up the wall with the set spoilers is that the short stories are often completely spoiled by them. I can not for the life of me understand why they don't start the stories in a way that the final 2 could spoil the huge plot relevant cards..which could then lead into the proper spoiler season.

yeah, this confuses me, too. it's not like it's a two-way street: i can tell what happens in the story from a card, but i'm probably not going to figure out a card from the story
As a Standard and Limited player I can honestly say I like spoilers. More spoilers good. The week before having the full set is satisfactory.
As for who they give the spoilers to? Let them reward the people who throw adulation their way, whatever. They make it to Salvation and mythicspoiler where I consume them so what... ever.
What is obnoxious is that marketing thinks they're doing ANYTHING AT ALL. They get mad their PLAN is foiled when there's an unauthorized leak. BooHoo. Their plan is usually just weak and if it's story related I really don't care. They are not story tellers, I pay ZERO attention to their banal plots. I want to know what the next Standard format is going to be warped by (though lately I'm caring less and less about they're broken Standard).
Make good cards. Balance the game. Release spoilers 3-4 weeks ahead in a trickle so I can consume them and we can yell at each other about them.
Do not assume marketing is earning their keep. They are not.
The core dump one week out, meh... I thought it was crappy when we had to pick our color or guild. Picking based on zero info at signup was total crap.
Now that they've removed that from the equation, meh... frankly an hour is long enough to absorb the common/uncommon trash dump after we've seen all the mechanics and the good cards.
What irks me above all else is the fact that they spoil mythics and rares. Then, once the season starts going, you know you're left with the jank and pile and the rank and file. All the bombs have been spoiled and everything that follows is just major meh.

A lot of people complained about that during recent spoiler seasons and it seems to have had an effect! Right now (ignoring basic lands and pw-deck cards, which are two commons and 1.9 mythics) 40% of cards spoiled so far are commons, 30% are uncommons. And almost half of the eleven rares are just a single land cycle which barely qualifies as five separate pieces of information.
This should make fans of lower rarity spoilers quite happy. Don't take me wrong, I expect a lot of rares/mythic rares during the first week (six planeswalkers and Gods to go), but they will be mixed in with common spoilers as it seems.

This spoiler season (AKH) is so mad slow I'm basically already bored of it, which sucks given the vast hype i have for Egypt Block :/
Apparently there are just no third party spoilers this season? One Wizards Twitter dropped a card in the last like 18 hours, and that's it. Where are the Japanese/Chinese/Korean/Russian previews we all clamour to translate in the morning??
Despite the "slowness" of this spoiler season, we got all of the rares and mythics ahead of the full spoiler release. So it seems they just rebalanced a little.
