People say that ths Thing in the Ice is bad because is bad if you top deck it late game.Im not very familair with a more competitive setting but isn't Young Pyromance also a bad top deck?
Sure YP isn't the best ever either if you have nothing but a 2/1 is at least something compared to the stone blank TitI. Pyromancer also snowballs much harder if you start drawing some gas.
A 0/4 defender is not a blank card. A 2/1 is normally slightly better, but even then not by much. Pyromancer notably dies to basically anything, whereas TitI is resilient (Lightning Bolt, Gut Shot, Darkblast, Pyroclasm, Anger of the Gods and more all kill Pyro but not TitI).
This and evolving wilds are in completely different boats. Strictly worse doesn't describe it. Wilds doesn't even tap for mana. These lands have vastly different jobs in different decks.
Didn't you get the memo? On MTGS "strictly worse" means "there exist possible situations where it's worse."

And, for the record, I am definitely NOT in that boat when it comes to "strictly worse". Strictly worse means "objectively worse in all conceivable situations involving existing cards", not "subjectively worse when used in a similar deck or strategy". I simply misread the card.

I once got into a "discussion" here as to whether Shivan Dragon was strictly worse than Thundermaw Hellkite. He said it was strictly worse, while I said no. Sure, Hellkite is a better card, but there are many places where Shivan Dragon will win you the game and Thundermaw Hellkite won't.
I think nobody mentioned it, so here it goes: people, do not forget Spellskite IS a horror creature, which could be more than relevant when talking about Thing in the Ice. I mean, I see people mention Abrupt Decay and other creature removal, and Spellskite could be a must include in decks with our new Kraken Lord, ; )
By the way, how do you feel with the name of any deck based on this THING being "Thing in the Deck"? Come on, don't tell me it's not sweet!!

Playing Horror tribal is looking more and more attractive, though. Kinda makes me want to try it with tons of cantrips and Chasm Skulker. Maybe add a couple of Revokers too.
Phyrexian Obliterator is waaay too slow, requires extreme mono color investment and, as Nicol Bolas said, you can't curve with horrors every turn or you'll never flip The Thing. It's not like we need a 5/5 Trampler either when we have a 7/8 in an empty board.

Young Pyro at least leaves some friends behind when removed. In theory TitI looks like a golden ticket, but in practice the deck may end up looking like a one-trick pony.
Ojutai's Command is probably better than Cryptic Command since you're playing tricolor. Reanimating The Thing with it while cantripping sounds too good not to try anyway.
I agree. Fortunately I have a playset, so I will try it and see how it goes. I was also thinking that, maybe even better than Celestial Colonnade, you could try the new UR manland from OGW. After all, it hits for 4, and it costs 1 less. Or maybe a mix?
Personally, I'd go for a more U/W/r Control strategy, so Colonnade would be my choice. Then maybe add Jace or something.

You wouldn't have to worry about that in the first place. When the equipped creature deals combat damage in the first strike step, Elbrus triggers and flips, and thus is no longer attached when the creature deals damage in the regular combat step.

You wouldn't have to worry about that in the first place. When the equipped creature deals combat damage in the first strike step, Elbrus triggers and flips, and thus is no longer attached when the creature deals damage in the regular combat step.

It definitely makes more sense this way. After all, you're not exactly transforming Bloodline Keeper if the card face on the battlefield is Lord of Lineage.

How is that mean? If I'm correct, you cast affinity, goes on the stack, thing triggers & transforms, returns everything, then affinity resolves. Or does the combo involve you casting affinity, then other stuff until thing transforms?
You'd cast Affinity as the third spell, let it resolve, and then cast another spell to trigger the flip. Bye-bye lands (now, if you wanted to be really mean, the fourth spell would be Day's Undoing).

Since you're on green at that point, throw in a Root Maze so any lands they draw off of Day's Undoing do nothing for a whole turn, and fetches do nothing for two whole turns.
Heck, even without Day's Undoing, Root Maze stalls them a turn.

Yep, the deck I talk about is a common+uncommon deck that combined a bunch of R burn spells with U creatures that drew you cards whenever hey hit the opponent (Like Thieving Magpie for example), it wasn't the strongest deck, but once it got rolling, man, it was really difficult to stop, mostly because you ended drawing 4-5 cards a turn, and from those, at least 3 were more creatures or more burn, the deck was pretty fun to play.
So, one or two of these Krakens would do a fine job cleaning part of the table, as letting loose 4 instants is pretty easy on that deck.
In what universe? If you build a deck like that, and ever draw that hand, I will personally come to wherever you live, perform complicated acts of awestruck ********, then disembowel myself to escape the world that allowed something like this to occur and validate you.

StaffThere are a few cases where a card would flip and then immediately flip back. Most notably was Bloodline Keeper with Illusionist's Bracers equipped.
Elbrus has never had that problem though.
