I'm happier than most with BFZ so far, and I've really been trying to avoid calling out "bad" cards until we get a sense of the set as a whole, but I'm still pretty pissed about this. Essence Scatter has been absent from Standard for a season, and I assumed that was because they wanted to make design space for stuff like Stroke and Scorn, but apparently Essence Scatter is now too powerful for Standard.
Devoid-Scatter should have been fine. This minus the Creature restriction should have been... well, probably really good, but it's not like Standard is overflowing with good countermagic these days.
Looks like this blue mage is sticking to black/green for another set.

That exile clause is pretty relevant against the various green mages out there that just wanna loop den protectors all day, but i don't think this is a main deck card, seems like very solid sideboard tech though
I guess this has the advantage of hitting creatures with immunity to blue or colored spells...
No it doesn't. No creature exists with that ability active on the card as it is a spell. Protection from Blue and similar only do something on the battlefield.

I totally thought that this countered any spell CMC 4 or less and lost my mind. Then I reread it, and it's still okay. Will definitely see play (at least in standard), especially considering it hits Siege Rhino and Mantis Rider.
Yeah I read that wrong too, would have been total staple in every format but alas no.In standard though I think well be seeing a lot of this.
A few points on this:
-Hits most of the relevant early and midgame threats like rider raptor rhino mentor protector etc.
-Against many aggro decks it will hit every threat.
-It can be cast for a single blue with Herald of Kozilek.
-Comparison to nulify / people saying its worse than nullify is incorrect, being 1U vs UU makes it much easier to cast in multicolor decks. Having played nullify some in this standard I can tell you the worst thing is when you really need to counter a T2 play but can't due to only 1 u source or a tapland.

While that is true, in decks like Esper Dragons, Nullify would have been consistently castable on turn 2, yet it saw no play.

Just play 5-color.
Heh, maybe. We'll see.
Actually, the deck I'm most excited about DOES feature Blue, but it's mostly for Jace. I'm pretty much done attempting to cast countermagic in Standard for a while.

I feel with all the restrictions already on the card, they could have at least templated it to Exile a creature spell, so it could even have the fringe playability of countering things like Thrun. As is, it will fill a role in standard so long as Den Protector shenanigans are around, but it feels like it could have been more.

Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.

Essence Scatter was good enough to see MB play for a while, and Standard has become a lot more focused on Creatures since.
I'm sure it'll see play, but "insane"? We're entering a format with Eldrazi, a counter that can't hit them seems rough.
You are also entering a format where Aggro decks have incredible mana bases and very little efficient removal for early creatures. It is insane because it efficiently fills a very much needed gap for an entire archetype.
Everyone calling Horribly awry a bad essence scatter is totally ignoring an important function of the card. Exiling matters far more than normal in the current environment. The processor mechanic is a thing. We've already seen a couple powerful processors in ulamog's nullifier and blight herder. Now all we need are ways of efficiently putting your opponents cards into exile, and we are getting those too.
Im anticipating a single mana red devoid instant that hits creatures and players. (either that or 2v3 CMC for 3 damage)

I think the reason for that is more that silumgars scorn is better in that deck, plus nullify doesn't exile which is currently pretty relevant

Great card, will see play in standard. WOTC have been doing their best to keep standard diverse and balanced, this is a step forward to that goal. Countering is a powerful slice of the pie and they need to keep it restricted on the low CMC spells. People who complain probably want to bash teh n00bs with their island. This rewards metagaming.

I do think it should be "Horribly Awry," but whatever.
We are approaching a nice threshold of country spells for standard that an older school permission deck could be feasible.
