Man, with a name like that I'd expect it to give you control of it or something, not just counter and exile! (Or perhaps change the targets, if it worked for spells other than creatures.)
While this is alright and in Modern it is a strictly better Essence Scatter in most matchups (except UW Control, RG Tron, and Amulet Bloom), I miss Essence Scatter. Negate isn't overpowered. Nullify barely saw any play. So why can't Essence Scatter get printed, especially since there are so many Eldrazi with abilities that trigger on casting?
Yeah,if this hadn't specified creature spell this would be arguably better than Counterspell in non-rotating 60 card formats.
It would have been absolutely been better than Counterspell in Legacy/Modern if it didn't have the creature clause. People don't play cards that cost more than 4 in those formats unless they are cheating them into play.
FoW, Dig, and Terminus would be the major misses. Counterspell is barely played in Legacy, so I'm not sure it would have had too much of an impact there. Modern, it would have been great.
Looks good. I like the overlap you get between this and Disdainful Stroke. The fact this exiles gives you more Processor fuel. Ulamog's Nullified gets one step closer to playable.

Here's another person who missed the word "creature" on first read and was startled by how good it appeared to be.
So here's what I think is going on with this card, i.e., why they printed this instead of Essence Scatter (Hint: it's Limited, and it's not exactly about how good Essence Scatter is):
- While they've said they don't want this set's Limited environment to be pure "Battlecruiser Magic" like Rise of the Eldrazi was, they've also said they want to make big, Eldrazi-casting ramp decks viable in draft.
- Maro further said, in this week's article, that UG was specifically meant to be a ramp archetype in draft.
- Cheap cards that remove/counter creatures are good for slower decks (e.g. control or ramp) because they can be played early to slow down aggro. However, if those cards are Pacifism or Essence Scatter, they're also very good against ramp, because they very efficiently answer the big finishers the ramp deck was counting on to win.
So one thing R&D can do to favor ramp strategies in Limited is to make good, cheap answers to creatures, but limit them somehow so they don't work well against big finishers. See Flame Slash in ROE, or Gideon's Reproach in BFZ for other examples.
That's what this is; a Limited tool, like Gideon's Reproach, for beating up aggro decks without hurting the ramp decks. I don't know why it's uncommon... maybe it started at common and got bumped up because drafting UG Ramp was too good?

Essence Scatter actually seems pretty bad against Eldrazi ramp. I really don't want to be casting Essence Scatter against Conduit of Ruin, Desolation Twin, or even Deathless Behemoth.
It seems part of the problem is that people don't READ the card well the first time. "Oh wow a 10/10 trample, haste, double strike for 2RR! ....Oh wait I read it a 2nd time: its just a 5/5 haste, trample for 3RR, this set sucks!"
I don't think this was an unexpected move. They pooped on wrath and llanowar elves, control was going to get its counters shifted back a little too
Yes, but Elvish Mystic was seeing a lot of play. Supreme Verdict was seeing a lot of play. Nullify was seeing almost no play, yet they made a card that is worse than it (yes, I know that this is easier to cast and exiles, but missing Eldrazi, Atarka, and Ojutai is huge). Why would you weaken near-unplayable cards?

That's a good point, but I have to assume that most ramp targets don't have cast triggers, especially the sub-rare cards that tend to be archetype backbones. The common Eldrazi Devastator and uncommon Breaker of Armies, for example.

I guess, but at uncommon, it still shouldn't be a problem. Premium removal is supposed to be uncommon.

Just because I missed the word "creature" the first time doesn't change the fact that it's a worse version of a card printed as recently as M14.

Fair. Counterspell shows up as a one of on occasion in Miracles and Stoneblade, but not hitting Dig in particular would be huge for those decks.

Yep. The downshift in power levels is just disgusting. Safe and boring are the order of the day for this set.

Does not deal with Tasigur. Delve is an alt payment method, not a reduction of CMC.
