Small rules question, is a spell defined as a card on the stack or could it be a card in th graveyard?
I am looking at explosion as a twin player and it feels like an easier to cast cryptic that might help deal with some problematic creatures and planes walkers. The biggest thing is easier to cast than cryptic for me, especially in grixis and rug twin.

Yes, to bounce a spell it has to be on the stack. Think of it as a remand without the words counter.
Brutal Expulsion is like the new modern staple in UR control kkk
From Beyond will be an EDH favorite : Tutor for the Titans
Firebird is just ok , probably will se play in mono red standard
The fire bird won't see play in RDW. It sucks. The reanimation cost is way too high and at 4 mana it has to do a hell of a lot. Currently Thunderbreak Regent is just better especially now that Draconic Roar is the only efficient 2 drop burn left after rotation. And after thunderbreak rotates if rdw has to resort to this nonsense it just won't be a deck. How many *****ty phoenixes have we had in the past few years? At least Flamewake Phoenix synergieses with other cards well and has a reasonable casting and reanimation cost.
Pheonix's are SB card vs. control decks. Very rarely they arr suppose to be more then that.
I miss Invasion block. Jilt was common and is essentially the same as expulsion, except you could actually cast it for 2 in an emergency.
I think you need to re-read brutal expulsion about 5 more times
I'm sure he understands all the differences between the two cards. "Essentially the same" may be an overstatement, but the two cards do do similar things, and Jilt can be cast for 2.

Formerly Angrypossum over at the now-defunct WotC forums.
Yes, but it had one more power in the air and returns itself to play for free at half the power. In a way it was similar to persist creatures. The value was built-in for free as a two-for-one. The 4RR morph cost was an optional bonus more than anything else. This card requires a total 6RRRR investment to get the two-for-one value. Its playability depends entirely on how playable the mana ramping cards are in this set.
Karakas might make Venser better in Legacy, but it doesn't matter in Modern. I'd say that Expulsion is better than Venser in Modern, and depending on the meta, it could be better than Electrolyze.
Does anyone with a preview card NOT hype the hell out of their card?
There's hype and then there's overhype. Just look at what he did with Jace, the Living Guildpact to name one recent example. He knowingly, blatantly artifically inflated the price by overhyping the card, and now in 2015 I still haven't seen the monster he promised us he was going to be.
Am I the only one that thinks all the spoiled cards so far are mediocre? That new awakening zone reads "turn 4 do nothing", The R/U spell is too expensive to set up any kind of tempo play, Remand would be unplayable at 4, and that phoenix is hot garbage. Oh 6 mana to recur him thats SWEET, oh I also have to play a land that turn even better! Like I swear no one is good at evaluating cards, this feels like Theros all over again. Theros produces this great constellation mechanic but they're so terrified of making affinity all over again almost all the constellation cards are unplayable. It's the same with the Eldrazi, they don't want to break standard so they make them all unplayable. These are not good cards, everyone is so hyped to go back to zendikar that they're convincing themselves these very unplayable cards are good.
Brutal Expulsion is one of the more intriguing cards revealed so far. Like, it has disintegrate damage (And potentially on a planewalker too) and spell bouncing which are not particularly common effects. It's also devoid so it bypasses protection from red/and or blue. It's just that these effects are at their best in the early game and the mana cost is not exactly early game.

If I will get a nickle for anytime someone says they are casting Brutal Explosion instead of Expulsion, I might actually be able to buy a Black Lotus. ""
Tried that during Innistrad block when people would say "soulbound" instead of soulbond. I almost reached across the table a few times to slap a fool...
I can think of a 4 mana tempo play that kills etched champion.
Supreme Verdict.
Verdict does not work well in Twin, which is where I see Explosion seeing play in modern. Bouncing emrakul is a very fringe play that I don't think matters, only place I can see it working is with Windbrisk Heights. I see bouncing Verdict or Abrupt as a more realistic play. Where I see this card being a strong play is 2-for-1-ing creature decks, and completely negating Snapcaster Mage plays. Time will tell, but I look forward to testing this in Twin decks.

I think of it more like Hellion Crucible in those INN-RTR red decks, where it's a nice 4 drop 3 damage in the air when you draw him and later in the game if you're flooding you can turn your extra lands into value by recurring him. Crucible was probably better because it was a land, but I still think this card has some level of game.
All these cards are good compared to the rest of the set. From Beyond is very questionable, but it's the Eldrazi tutor of the set most likely. Firebird is fantastic in aggressive red, it's going to see play.
Edit: Whoa you can choose both on Brutal Expulsion. High cost, but it's a huge tempo play that can also sometimes get the 1 for 1. Flexibility is definitely its strong suit.

Oh hey, a couple of nice rares for a change! Cool! I'm glad to see that the previously-spoiled super Awakening Zone has an extra little bonus attached. It was already nice before but now it's a lot better!
Seeing a colorless UR instant is so weird, but I like seeing another Venser, Shaper Savant effect.
Mythic Phoenix is mythic phoenix. Not much to say about it. Seems like it might be pretty good honestly, but it's not a card I get excited over.

Someone didn't read the entire quote... I said that it could be better in certain metas. I doubt that those metas will commonly occur, but they will exist.

No, the two cards "can" do similar things, Brutal Expulsion just has exponentially more situational applications that matter to constructed.

None look overpowered, but all look playable.
Smothering Abomination has a friend, but I wish it cost 3 to curve into it.
The Phoenix is great, but I wish it had 1 more point of power to bring back flame wake.
Expulsion is really cool, but I wish it cost one less/had another mode/could go to the face.
I guess I can't have everything I wish for? I do dig all of these cards though, pretty cool. Playable, but not OP.

And how in the world is Supreme Verdict a tempo card? It's pretty much the exact opposite.
