In a Standard where Ulamog and friends will be running about, this seems like it would be more useful. Hits Rhinos and raptors and Dragons and such, too.

The difference between 3 and 4 mana is enormous, this hits a ton more things. It also costs 1 more, so obviously this won't see play in any format outside of constructed. I think this will be constructed playable. It hits counterspells, planeswalkers, Eldrazi, Siege Rhino, pretty much everything. It's not great against red aggro but discard rarely is.

It will hit a lot of things, but doesn't Despise do (mostly) the same thing at a cheaper rate? Two mana is a lot more than one for a discard spell.

But despise won't take out Languish, abzan charm and other spells.
The fact that this exiles makes it an enabler for Processors, and as a result makes Ulamog's Nullifier that much better. Hell, it even provides you with information, meaning you'll be better positioned to counter a critical spell.

I dunno, I think IoK alongside this would be pretty strong together in Standard. Probably more so than Duress+Despise, because you could probably more reliably strip their hand bare.
Besides working with Herald of Kozilek how does this card being colorless matter?

"You can tell how dumb someone is by how they use Mary Sue"
Though unlikely to be used this way as it is probably not good enough for other formats, I like the idea of a "discard" card that does not help an opponent's reanimation strategy. That alone makes the exile clause feels worth it.

Iona can't stop you from casting it when her controller chooses Black? Won't trigger your opponents Demon Horn? Neither of those are in standard, but hey
I'm sure there will be some reasons for colourless instants/sorceries to matter in BFZ (and Oath) though.
You have to remember folks in standard against a large majority of decks this gets everything but land and exiles it. Yes against the more aggressive decks this card doesn't do as much since they have fewer 3+ mana cards, but I assume it was tested at B and they were tired of people playing it against any mid-range or control deck and grabbing ugin or grabbing a removal spell, grabbing a deathmist raptor etc...
So at B its better than thoughtseize against some decks and it exiles the card to boot making sure they can't get it back. It's funny how people rip on standard though when standard is a varied and fun format right now, standard does not have to be insanely powerful to be fun. It can be fun when its ridiculously powerful but balance in that type of format is much harder and people get pissed when you ban a card and break a deck. I remember Urzas/Tempest standard and they were constantly banning and using errata on cards in that format because new combo decks were showing up every week.
I agree. At 1 mana this is pretty much a strict upgrade to Appetite for Brains (as it being colourless is not really a benefit or drawback), and attacks every deck except the most low to the ground ones. Given that Thoughtseize is also horrible against most of those kind of decks (with regards to its times in Standard), it would actually be a decent equivalent. Hitting 3 drops is a big improvement over Appetite,as attacking Deathmist Raptor in a fashion that actually answers it is going to be a lot more difficult come October.
So it's Appetite for Brains costing 1 extra for being colourless and able to also hit 3 costs. It's not terrible, exile can be very strong and 3cc has a lot of important cards, but it's far from being good or even maindeckable, fringe standard sideboard at most.
But costing 2 mana is also a big deal...

It actually did see play in sideboards fairly consistently.

In a world of Den Protectors and Deathmist Raptors, that exile clause might actually make it worth that 1 mana more.

Many thanks to DNC at Heroes of the Plane Studios
Fair enough. Occasional sideboard play.
The mana is a bigger deal than hitting 3 drops though.
