Thalia was, in the story snippets we got, more of a tactical genius rather than a true fighter. She was the one who laid waste to Geralf & Gisa's armies by luring the zombie horde into thraben, then using the straw to set fire to them. Her fighting style based on her card is that of a nimble and rapid fighter. But most of all, she's a leader. Such was her position.

My Commander decks:
Chandra, Torch of Defiance - Oops! All Chandras.
Prime Speaker Zegana - Draw for Power.
Pir & Toothy - Counterpalooza.
Arcades, the Strategist - Another Brick in the Wall.
Zacama, Primal Calamity - Calamity of Double Mana.
Edgar Markov - Vampires Don't Die.
Child of Alara - Dreamcrusher.
The following might be a good analogy:
If a MTG card depicting a male warrior (with a sword and everything) with a physique like Christian Bale in "The Machinist" (or Tasigur) were to be printed people would make comments like "lol, this guy looks like he can't even hold a sword, let alone use one" - and they would be right. Warriors don't look like that. It doesn't make sense - so why does it make sense for a woman?
To use a Game of Thrones analogy: Warriors don't look like Daenerys or Prince Joffrey, they look more like Sandor Clegane or Brienne of Tarth.
Uh, there's a big problem with this analogy, though; we can't see any of Thalia's physique. Unless you're saying that athletic people can't be pretty.
I'm saying: Don't expect a woman who can fight a man to look like a chick from baywatch.
...You do realize that there is a lot of middle ground between "built like a tank" and "supermodel body", right? And again, athletic people can have pretty faces, too.
To echo theMarc, what does her face have to do with her ability to fight? Are people smacking each other with their chins or something? She could be the Hulk from the neck down for all we know from this picture. There is plenty of artwork to fight over, but this just isn't one of them.
Now that I look at it a little more. I think the biggest problem is that the rapier's handle is too small. Which in turn gives the illusion that her face is huge and stretches the whole picture (helped by the fact that her hair covers the edges of face pretty well).
Any idea of how much this may be when it does end up coming out? I just want one for my collection. And where will the best place be to buy it? TCG? SCG? Ebay?

WMCQ Geist of Saint Traft stabilized in the $30-$35 range. This sees a little more play, but the original is not as hard to get, so it'll probably end up around the same range.

Along with many mods, I've moved shop over to MTGNexus. Come check us out!
Asinine and ill-advised, and not even for "feminist" reasons despite those here making a rare appearance to whine and gnash their teeth about "SJWs" (4chan's MtG threads are plenty active, guys).
There's no context or composition, rapier isn't nearly foreshortened enough to avoid making her face seem like a big blob, and yes, it is silly to draw her as an unblemished, 9/10 beauty. Although that would be interesting too, she doesn't need to look like Brienne of Tarth as someone mentioned (I believe that's called fallacy of extremes), but something in between would be interesting too. Those with a lot of baggage are quick to call these SJW positions, but that's not my reason: my reason is that I'm a fan of the fantasy genre. I'm happy it's growing more gritty and respectable and I thought chainmail bikinis were dumb regardless of issues of objectification.
They tried something different here. I respect that. But sometimes when you take a risk it flops. And this is a flop.
She's beautiful and youthful. She looks good, I don't see a problem in a fantasy universe. Brienne of Tarth doesn't even look that bad, she's just tomboy-ish, tall, and built. Thalia is very feminine, what of it?
I don't get what all this discussion is about. Characters in fantasy are allowed to look as beautiful or as brutish as the creator wants them to be. Personally, I love Thalia and the art so I'm picking up a playset as soon as I can.
I keep accidentally reading the topic title as something a little dirtier than "Promo". Oh lowercase m, why must you resemble r + n so much? Anyway, not a big fan of extreme closeups. How can we appreciate her Gothic European attire and armaments when literally all we can see is her face and part of her sword? She's still got nothing on Colfenor, of course. Dude looks like an elephant as much as a tree.
MTGS Wikia Article about "New World Order"
Every time I read a comment about "Well if this card had card draw/trample/haste/indestructible/hexproof/life gain...", I think "You're missing the point." They're armchair developer comments that fail to take into account the card's role in the greater Limited and Standard environment. No, it may not be as good as whatever card you're comparing it to. There's a reason for that. Not every burn spell is Lightning Bolt, nor does it need to be or should be.
PSA to everyone who keeps forgetting about the Reserved List:
You're on a website dedicated to talking about MtG. You're only a few keystrokes away from finding out what cards are on the Reserved List. You're also only a few keystrokes away from finding out why some cards on the Reserved List got foil printings in FtV, as Judge promos, or whatnot, as well as why that won't happen again. Stop doing this.
Brienne of Tarth doesn't even look that bad, she's just tomboy-ish, tall, and built.
She's more attractive in the series than she's described in the book.
From a Wiki:
She is very tall, muscular, flat-chested and ungainly, with straw-colored hair and broad, coarse features that are covered in freckles. Her teeth are prominent and crooked, and [redacted due to possible spoiler]. Her mouth is wide, her lips are swollen, and her nose has been broken more than once.
The main problem isn't that she's beautiful; the original Thalia was attractive. It's the Hollywood blow-job lips. Anyone here who's not entirely naive can see it. Art is a reflection of an artist's worldview and psyche. Every aspect of the final product is deliberate. The artist here believes that kind of suggestion makes sense on a holy warrior who keeps evil at bay by increasing a spell's casting cost. I find that idiotic. I'm not bent out of shape about it. I forgot about this thread until checking the Rumor Mill this morning. But the fact remains that the artist is clueless.

Holy hell, there are people like this. I know a couple of women with naturally big lips, it happens. Big lips does not equal ******** lips, or whatever the hell you're saying. Drawings have deliberate details, but that doesn't mean the artist is fulfilling some pervert fantasy. They're lips for heaven's sake, we all have them in plain sight every single day, and maybe the artist thought she looked better like that. Maybe he didn't even think twice because he's seen women with larger lips.
It's a normal thing, women with big lips exist. And they're not some unspeakable or unshowable taboo. I think the card looks great, but I'm not sure why lips have you offended or thinking less of the artist. Maybe i just got trolled, dunno.
The chainmail bikini went from a fantasy trope to the laughing stock of fantasy art. I doubt a lot of people here would line up to defend the integrity of that particular trope if it was put on a Magic card today (but you never know). This art is certainly not chainmail bikini level stuff, but I doubt many will deny that it belongs to the same kind of naive view of the fantasy genre.
All in all Magic is doing a pretty good job of giving a diverse interpretation of fantasy, ranging from gritty to seductive to nauseating to historically inspired. The standard is damn high in the M:tG of today, so it's no wonder if this card feels sub-par to some.
Didn't bother to search the thread, but doesn't she look like lightning from ff13?
Given how generic looking Lightning is except maybe her hair, I hear this phrase a lot. I got Lightning vibes off Spectral Ward. Comparing her to the doll-like, same-face Final Fantasy aesthetic isn't high praise. Wizards has loads of talent and resources available; there's no need for them to go derivative.
I might be in a minority saying I liked Lightning's design and her character. It's simple and iconic, and I took an interest to her stoicism.
I totally agree.
To be fair though I like tough women who don't fall into the helpless damsel in distress trope.
If my signature didn't give that away alreay lol

I don't like the new art. Getting closer, closer, closer... we may eventually find out Descent Into Madness was an extreme close-up of a pore.
UTeferi, Temporal ArchmageU's prison: blue is the new orange is the new black.
Mizzix Of The Izmagnus : wheels on fire... rolling down the road...
BSidisi, Undead VizierB: Bis zum Erbrechen
GTitiania, Protector Of ArgothG: Protecting Argoth, by blowing it up!
GYisan, The Wanderer BardG: Gradus Ad Elfball.
Duel EDH: Yisan & Titania.
