Says in the article that you get one "seeded" pack from Born of the Gods as well. This is like the guild packs from last year, or the mono color packs from the fall.
It's not particularly strange. Before we had special packs for (pre)release tournaments, the second set usually gave you 3 packs of the first set and 3 packs of the second. I would guess that the seeded booster will contain all/mostly BNG cards (and will definitely contain only BNG rares/mythics). Because of that, you'll probably end up with an aggregation of 3 packs for THS and 3 packs of BNG, even if the 3rd pack isn't strictly speaking a booster pack.
For me I look at a pre-release is to play with new cards. I understand its a small set but if you are only going to give me two packs from that new set, do it in draft and have the last theros. That way we are getting mostly new stuff. This new set up, especially with the all of the rtr block, theros and now BNG it has been sealed. I love drafting and seems like they are lowering that for the pre-res. These two points are the reason I don't go to pre-releases anymore. I have the old stuff, so why would I spend money on it?
As someone who works with people at a shop this sucks. Why? Three Theros booster packs means you have to work extra hard on people cheating. Ughhh, I feel bad for my homies back home.
Why are people surprised? Has it really been that long since a Large-Small-Small block?
Back in the day, it used to be one Tournament Pack + three boosters from the new set; that switched to three and three when they did away with Tournament Packs.
We're still getting three Born of the Gods packs, guys, this isn't unusual in the slightest.
I know why they do it and have played when this was the norm, but I still don't like it.
I want to go to the prerelease to play with the new cards and hope to pull/trade/buy the ones from the set I want for my EDH deck. This means it is much less likely for me to get them.

So will the JOU prerelease be THS-THS-THS-JOU-JOU-JOU,
or THS-THS-BNG-BNG-JOU-JOU (or something else)?
2 of each, as prereleases are basically sealed deck tournaments and when you have the entire block available that means 2 packs of each set including the middle one. WotC designed it that way. I doubt they designed for triple theros triple journey into nyx as that makes no sense.

"Yawgmoth," Freyalise whispered as she set the bomb, "now you will pay for your treachery."
Are you sure? The last time, I remember a Large-Small-Small set, we get in each of the prereleases a 3-3 split. 3 of the large set and 3 of the new small set. If it was the third set, you did not get any cards from the middle set.
So 3-3 split is normal.
And because of the seeded pack, which is obvious a pack of the new set, you will get a 3-3 split in BNG's prerelease.
I hope we get some videos with people opening them beforehand, so we can make sure that the seeded back is BNG
Hate to break it to you but WotC specifically gave instructions to all LGS's to not hold any drafts during pre-release weekends. This change was made two or three prereleases ago, maybe back as far as RTR. If your store did allow booster drafting during a prerelease, it was against WotC's orders.
WotC realized that people were just doing drafts to get their hands on a bunch of the new product and bypassing the marketed reason for holding a prerelease, which is sealed tournament play.
Why are people surprised? Has it really been that long since a Large-Small-Small block?
Considering that we had the largest jump in players within the last two years, yep.
We get plenty of "what is a prerelease" posts each quarter... considering this is the first time a huge bulk of prerelease attendees will be seeing this sort of format, we can only expect plenty of sour faces.
Oh and we haven't been able to have drafts for YEARS. Wether or not shops actually followed that suggestion is another thing.
Also of note on there is no mention of drafting whatsoever on that page, which I find a little bit worrying as Drafting was a important part of my LGS's last pre-release event and as it was their 2nd ever event with a lot of new players I'm kinda concerned that if there is no drafting the event won't be anywhere as near successful this time round.
Pre-release is always sealed. If your LGS was drafting, then it was technically breaking the requirements of a pre-release.

Whilst the formats aren't necessarily tied to what has been done in the past, in the days prior to preboxed product Set C prereleases in ABC blocks were AAACCC, not AABBCC like the regular Sealed format.

In the last sealed I played before blocks existed, which was the release weekend of Ice Age, you had your choice of a 4th Edition Starter or an Ice Age Starter and any three packs of your choice from: 4th, Ice Age or Fallen Empires.
