Just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to post this - though I had to stay up really late tonight to get all of the new cards up on SCG, it means I can get a lot more sleep Sunday right after midnight.

Really? Someone may have violated an NDA/TOS to get this out and you publicly thank them? I know you are joking a little bit....but you might not want to do that in the future.

...for the most part. I see some fun goodies for EDH but wow did they drop the ball on the rarities of this set. This really looks like a set dedicated to Limited. It does look fun as hell but I feel sorry for you Constructed folks. Probably going to extend my hiatus from Standard till Theros is OUT. I hope the Commander Precons won't be bad.
I know people are going to give the person to who spoiled this early a lot of grief but I just want to thank you whatisfgh for doing what you did.
Fate Foretold isn't all that good. It's Altar's Reap at sorcery speed in a color that wants to play few creatures generally, not a cheaper Divination. You're drawing two cards but have little control over when you get the second card, and you're giving up a card to get that second card.
Lash of the Whip made me really appreciate Dismember and Tragic Slip.
Think this is strong evidence that people are terrible at evaluating cards. Lets see Fates Foretold is cheaper than divination, you cantrip automatically, you trigger heroic, you put it on creature they must destroy or would have chumped blocked anyway, you don't have to sacrifice your own creature....Have you played the game at all?
so buying a common/uncommon playset for $36 shipped and fishing out some single rares/mythics in draft/fat pack isn't such a bad idea afterall. And to think I was worried about not being able to bust a box or two of this lol

Awesome man, hopefully you don't come back from that hiatus.
This picture is insanely relevant for magic players at the moment, at least in this thread.
Just a note for the mods -- when I try to access this thread on my PC, my antivirus blocks it and gives me a warning about a JavaScript Trojan. (I'm posting this using my tablet, which doesn't care.)
I haven't had time to digest this huge dump of cards, but I'm seeing a lot of triggers for heroism. Surprisingly not a lot of enchantment, though.

New Webcomic -- Genocide Man Life is funny. Death is funnier. Mass slaughter can be hilarious.
I'm not really feeling this set for commander. Maybe it's because commander has such a large pool it's hard to find new things that jump out at me.
Where is my weird global enchantment or crazy sorcery? I'm looking mainly at you red.
That is why this set feels so lackluster, as a fellow EDH player even I find this set lacking a certain creative flair. This set is just flat out boring for every format even limited and that is really unfortunate. It seems like development doesn't want to take as many chances with reducing card costs and is instead inflating them. Not every card has to expensive fun for EDH (at least we got the Colossus of Akros) or cheap speedy goodness for standard/modern/legacy, but at least put some effort into limited and not up the cost of old cards and slap on scry 1.

You do realize we're talking about blue? A color that's not typically aggressive? A color who's two heroic creatures both cost 3 mana (making this a turn 4 play). A color that has one constructed playable creature in the set (and that's a 4 drop). A color that isn't going to want to play this early. Divination is barely constructed playable due to sorcery speed.
The card pairs up well with Judge's Familiar but there is a major lack of creatures which function the way blue decks typically want which means there's a major issue with having enough targets for this enchantment.
A lot of awesome support for Heroic. I wonder why they were so slow to show it off?
For the most part, I really like how this set's turned out. There are a few things I don't really like, and a couple of cards that feel hideously overcosted, but in general, I'm looking forward to giving it a shot. I really like the amount of multicolor we're getting. This feels good for a set, to me. Zendikar and Innistrad's almost-no-multicolor didn't really appeal to me.
Here is some of the first replies to the Liliana of the Veil.
"Liliana is, um, interesting. Meh? Glad she costs 3, but not seeing great value at first glance.
EDIT: Well, obviously she works good at filling up graveyards and making you discard stuff you want in the graveyard. Chandra's Phoenix with Chandra seems ok. She's obviously going to be specialized. My Johnny sense just isn't tingling when I see her."
"The trick with her is going to be finding a way to make the +1 work. Definitely not an automatic 4x walker."
"Her CMC makes her usable BUT her abilities aren't the greatest. We'll see how good she is after the whole spoiler."
"I guess you could use her +1 to drop creatures to the graveyard."
"Liliana is...disappointing. The -2 seems decent and the ultimate seems OK as well. The + ability could be decent, but the card as a whole seems pretty underwhelming"
"Why am I horribly disappointed with the new Liliana? Richard Garfield is on the design team, right? MaRo, too? Where's the creativity?"
"Finally a low costed Black Walker, to bad her abilities are kind of lack luster. Hopefully theres a good way to use her abilities."
"I am dissapointed by Liliana"
All from the first page. I think people here always feel they are great at evaluating cards but in reality they are bad and then claim they always have loved something they poo pooed in the beginning to try and look cool.
Constructed playable is a bell curve, it shifts with overall power level, you have to wait and see where that curve adjusts to before you can say one way or another
You should look up the ones for Jace the Mind Sculptor -- some gems in there.

Way to cherry pick comments without any meaning of context. There were a lot of mixed reviews on her just like there would be any card.
Nice. Dripping with flavor, and looks like a great limited environment. Not everything is super amazing, but not every card needs to be and people who are like "the whole set is awful" need to get real.

Well, here's the list of cards I'm thinking about adding to decks:
Nylea - I still have Primal Rage in my Multani, Maro-Sorcerer Commander deck. She is just straight-up better for not much more cost.
Nykthos - I have 3 Commander decks that are mono-color with the other 2 on the way. All of them need this (especially white and red).
Prophet of Kruphix - Have you seen this guy? Completely, utterly bonkers.
Thassa - She will be my mono-blue Commander. Most of my Commander decks are very Commander-centric. Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker, Kemba, Kha Regent, and Prime Speaker Zegana all definitely require their respective generals to play their strategy to the best they can. While a lot of this stems from my Commander-deck-building philosophy, I honestly want at least one deck where I can cast my Commander once and forget it, and Thassa seems to fit the bill. I get to scry every turn and smooth out my draws, and I get to make things unblockable when I need to do damage. She doesn't do anything fancy, doesn't die easily, doesn't need to be built around, and isn't annoying like half of the other mono-blue guys.
Triad of Fates - If I build a BW Commander deck anytime soon, it will be her. Teysa 1 has a signficant hate level associated with her (too easy to "combo out" and the others are either non-impactful (both Ghost Councils, Selenia) or expensive (Vish Kal, Teysa 2). Triad has a lot going for it; a wanton amount of untap effects and "haste" enablers like Thousand Year Exilir, and very flexibile in terms of how you deal with things your opponents do.
That's just everything off the top of my head. I hope you come up with other stuff you want from Theros, but I think there are some excellent format all-stars, notably Nykthos and Prophet of Kruphix.

Some pretty good things for my naya hexproof deck for sure. Now for my rant! WTF is wizards problem? Do they not know what rarity to put Shimmering Grotto/Unknown Shores? Is it common/uncommon? And are there no Shimmering Grottos in Theros? What would they have had to make that uncommon then? So unimaginative wizards.
After seeing the rest of the set, I'm reversing my position on Steam Augury. I still don't think it's a good card, but with so little card draw in the format that's worth playing it's a solid "next best" sort of choice.
Blue's only draw spell is a 6 mana sorcery that draws one less card than Opportunity? I was hoping for a Serum Vision type cantrip, but can understand not getting it. But only one draw spell, and it's a 6 mana sorcery draw 3???

For those that claim they are EDH players, aren't you guys missing the obvious? Not everything about EDH surrounds the legendary creatures you can use as commanders or in the decks. And saying nothing is there for EDH is so untrue.

My only complain is the lack of "combo"/ "use me" Cards( Beside Purphoros, God of the Forge and maybe Pyxis of Pandemonium that is a *** and maybe Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx ( with the satyr) )
The set looks like maide for Timmy while Johnny have to Use RTR Block as a base while BORN of the Gods and Journey to Nyx don't come out...
But that s ok I will use Purphoros + Master of Waves for the lolz
