Except if you're in topdeck mode when you draw him.... then he's pretty bad....
He's a very situational walker...
Cannot protect itself, asks for a hand with a bomb when you drop him and the game will almost never be long enough for him to use his ultimate.
Still, he's VERY good if the board is in a stalemate state where no one finds advantageous to attack when you drop him...
the card advantage he will generate is going to give you the match in that situation....
In my opinion he's BY FAR the worst Garruk printed to date.
Still... every Garruk is very powerful... this guy also has a lot of potential.
If he just was able to drop ANY creature in the battlefield as opposed to just Green ones, maybe he'd be good enough not to be the worst of the Garruks.
I think we agree. If you're in topdeck mode and have board presence, he's still pretty good. If you're in topdeck mode and getting your ass kicked, he likely won't be able to save you.
I also agree that the other Garruks are better overall, and that this guy has a ton of potential. The new Standard format will decide how much play he sees as he could dominate in a slower Standard.
Dropping Emrakul turn 3-4 would be kinda op though. I think the green limitation is fine.
Hype is such a funny thing. Worldspine Wurm spiked by 125% on MODO.
As much as I like Garruk, I can't see him making Worldspine Wurm competitively viable in standard. You need to be able to actually cast the creatures without using Garruk. Garruk might be Standard viable, but the Wurm is strictly EDH imo.
My points were already argued for me so I won't bother, but I will completely agree when I first saw the link I was so excited the 4 mana broken garruk was back. Him being 6 is pretty ghastly. Then again we seem to be heading towards a big stuff format. I'm putting together a kind of bant aggro deck right now. Not quite Bant Hexproof. I could see a situation where I could fit a one of for him. He definitely doesnt fit in Bant control. Just seems like a bant/Naya goodstuff type thing
I love green to support other colors I play, but this Garruk is just to high a cmc to be playable in standard. Maybe a 1 of in a side board as dead bridge chant is often seen. Drawing cards is huge bonus I can not ignore, but it is a late game play. Mana ramping as an answer to play it is very conditional at best. I have to agree with many ofthe poster that the new Garrick is EDH quality. Some of claim the value of this Garruk will be high. Why? It will be a large set sold fora very long time in walmarts every where. I stated earlier about high cmc and limited playabilty, thus how will this Garruk see a high money value?
Except if you're in topdeck mode when you draw him.... then he's pretty bad....
Not at all. If I'm in topdeck mode I'll be SO happy to see this Garruk, assuming you have the mana to cast him. I don't mind losing a Walker if he draws me 2+ cards and gains me at least 5 life.
I'm going to have to playtest this card before I make any judgements on it. However, I feel that the GG requirement of this Garruk makes it easier to cast than Primal Hunter (which requires GGG), despite having a CMC of 6 instead of 5.
Seriously though, this Garruk is weaker than previous Garruks. I doubt he'll see 3-of positions in very many decks as he does now.
However, I reserve judgment on "unplayability" for now. I understand that Lead the Stampede, Dramatic Entrance, and Doubling Chant were terrible cards in standards past, but the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts, and it's possible that this has a place in a deck somewhere in the future as a result.

Why do people keep thinking that it's black on black art?
The card on the right is just the foil pattern on the card. That's not how it's actually going to look like, there will be color and junk.

The line in the article that explicitly refers to "unique black-on-black art by Steve prescott" might have given them the idea.

If you pull an M14 pack, then, no... they won't be black-on-black. The promos at the event are, however.
it's not like in modern you cant play birds of paradise andnoble heirarch or anything. this guy pretty much is the [CARD=Natural Order]NO in modern for NO Bant
So it pretty much looks like a foil pattern, so I feel like the article might be misinformed. We'll just have to wait and see.
It clearly stated black-on-black and "limited edition." If it's similar to the foiling pattern well then its still going to be "limited" and very expesnive.
So it pretty much looks like a foil pattern, so I feel like the article might be misinformed. We'll just have to wait and see.
Not only do foil patterns not have any text on them, unlike the black card; but those arts don't even line up, and it would make for the least foiled, most dull foil card (see how all the foil layers have bright spots).
Very interesting. His + ability should net an average of 2-3 cards depending on deck construction. I think that makes him the planeswalker with the most amount of card advantage per turn on a + ability. That is pretty strong, but decks that want late game card advantage engines are usually control, which tend to run fewer creatures and more spells and thus might make it hard for him to find a home.
Although, even in a spell-centric deck, as long as you have 16 creatures or so he'll average 1.25 creatures/turn, which is still a back-breaking card advantage engine. I could see a control deck showing up and running him if there are enough creatures to play in it that would make sense.
Than explain me why will it be diffrent? New Garruk is bad in standard and modern, and EDH won't make his price high.
In Standard before You even manage to but him on board You'll be on 5 life vs bant hexproof, naya blitz, naya aggro or gr aggro. That's a fact.
In Modern a 6 mana PW is just a no.
Prove me wrong son.
No, that is not a fact, that is an opinion. You forget that he's in colors that ramp, and an aggro deck isn't killing you by turn 4 unless they have a nut hand.
On the one hand, he's the single best planeswalker ever printed at generating card advantage in any reasonably constructed deck for him (he'll average 2 cards a turn at 24 creatures). And he can do it before being exposed to removal, so even if they attack and kill him next turn, he'll often net you cards AND life.
On the other, he costs 6 mana. That's so damn much, even in green. It's not unplayable in green, but it's a lot.
Really, I can't imagine casting him in most matchups and then losing the game, unless I'm already so low that I'm easily within burn range or an opposing combo deck assembles their combo on the next turn or something. Makes him a really solid 6 drop imo. At 6 mana, he pretty much wins you the game unless you're REALLY far behind, and has a significant impact on the game even if immediately taken care of. That's what you're looking for in a 6 drop.
Now, whether there's a deck around that wants a 4GG win con and which runs at least 24 creatures (to average 2 cards a turn and thus really pull ahead from it) remains to be seen.
As much as I like Green, I really don't think they need yet another great tool available to them. His abilities are ridiculous, you get access to card-draw, more creatures, and an all-around better beatdown plan. His abilities will go like this:
+1: Draw around 3 creatures, put 2 unneeded cards on the bottom.
-3: Play Thrags, other Green staples, while being able to play your creature cards you drew the turn before.
-7: Counter my 3/3? Fetch an Emrakul!
Then again, he is pretty overcosted, but seriously, I really hope Wizards makes a good Chandra to "balance" red out a bit.

Well, it many ways he is right. Before rotation I cannot conceivably see him making a legitimate impact. I'm not too concerned with that however, since the time period between the release of the core set and rotation is nothing short of silly. Post rotation, odds are Bant Hexproof and Naya Blitz will straight up diseaprer and many variants of R/x aggro will be neutered with departure of Hellrider/Aristocrat and to a lesser extent Thundermaw. I can definitely see him making an impact in a slower meta, and if I were contemplating picking up a set it would be based on Theros and beyond.

I think you will want to pick up a playset in august. Barring any unforeseen crazy summer decks using him he should plummet in August-september(before Theros preview season) and then if we find out stuff that makes him great in Theros his price will rise.
I see this being very good in ramp post rotation. For now, I think Primal Hunter does his job better.

For the promos, is it confirmed it's the Hasbro table that's going to have these and not some separate magic display? Cuz it's a pain to get the Hasbro stuff at SDCC!
