They're going to make Chandra, The Mind Sculptor... I mean... Spark Igniter? They're... They're... not going to give her four abilities are they? She is becoming the posterjace for this set, so maybe they will?! Omg!
I was excited about this announcement, until I saw the image at the bottom of the page: judging from the artwork, this core set shall be featuring the five planeswalkers from Lorwynagain! Why does WotC keep reprinting them? I was really hoping to see five new planeswalkers in the next core set after Magic 2013, so I now am growing very weary of seeing the group from Lorwyb so frequently; is anyone else tired of seeing the same five walkers again? And why has Chandra been used in the promo art of two consecutive core sets? What is so special about her, that she is given such attention? And will the artists ever actually illustrate her with hair? None of the other red-aligned planeswalkers (Koth, Tibalt, and Sarkhan) have their heads burning like torches, so why does Chandra?
I am certain that this core set shall not be terrible, and perhaps may be as awesome as was the previous core set, but I still cannot understand, or suppress my displeasure at, the fact that WotC is likely to reuse the same planeswalkers who have appeared in every core set since their introduction M2010, M2011, M2012, M2013, and now possibly M2014). What does everyone else say about that?

you can generally tell the easiest road to victory by how many players congregate on it; and the road of counterspells/control has been the freeway of choice in magic for quite some time.

What I find offensive is not that Wizards is endeavoring to make the game more accessible, but the attitudes of elitists who act as though no one of any age should show their face in the Magic public without first having mastery over the complexities of the game.

I think/hope (mostly hope) that, just like M2012, some of the original 5 (including Chandra, obviously) will return, while others will be differents. I know it's probably wishful thinking, but I could see Tamiyo as the blue walker, for exemple.
I know it probably won't be the case, with Jace being the posterboy and all, but it's still a possibility.
The Lorwyn 5 are the face of Magic and the core of the Magic storyline. It's seriously unlikely that we'll get a core set without at least most of the Lorwyn 5 any time soon.

Because they speak to the demographics of people who play the game. Which kid doesn't think Jace is uber-cool, Chandra and Liliana are fantasy hotties, Garruk is your badass Conan-like barbarian? It's only white that gets the shaft, between Gideon and Ajani. Competitive players will mostly care about the game effect they bring, be they named Liliana, Cindy or Barbara.
If the store owner says that I can't trade in the premises, I'll just go outside. If he says that I can't trade within 10m of his premises, I'll go to 11 meters. If he says that he doesn't want to see me trading, I will put a basket over his head and continue trading.
Yes, he's a local legend. He's only known to take his clothes off before he goes into the Ladies' Lockerroom. Nobody knows what he does in there because he's invisible, but it's almost certainly tons of masturbating.

I still kind of feel like they're very narrow faces of Magic -- especially when factoring their abilities in. Again, though, personal opinion, and I decidedly play the game more than I follow the lore or care about the outward appearance.
But I guess you have a point about white, in that all three of the "pure" white 'walkers are on fairly equal ground. Can't we have Elspeth, maybe, just as a change?
I hope they make a good version as many others have said. I also dont really get the poing of making the announcement. Not like we didnt think m2014 was coming. This gave us no information except for ooo chandra
I think they want the original Lorwyn 5 to be iconic faces of the game, and to do that it really helps if they all have at least one version that people think of as awesome, or at least pretty darn good.
So far Chandra is the only one that doesn't fit this criteria yet. In fact quite the opposite as Chandra Ablaze is considered one of the worst planeswalkers they've ever printed. So that being said, I am fully expecting a new version of Chandra in this core set and I am expecting it to be pushed all to hell to make sure it's very, very good. I just hope they are able to strike the right balance between "this card is awesome" and "this card is broken".

That's because you guys don't know how a business like this works.
For solicitation and copyright purposes, they have to announce a product, list its creators and attach at least one image to a product to officially list it in publications. This is also for advertisement purposes.
Announcing something as predictable as the Core set isn't really for the fans of the game. They just do it like this anyway to get us excited for it.
So, are girls not allowed to be preposterously hot anymore? Magic didn't set this trend, they follow it. Every magazine cover on the stands is airbrushed into oblivion. They just pretend that their fantasy creations are photography, misleading the masses.
Magic doesn't pretend. It embraces its fantasy.
Besides, for every Liliana there is an Elspeth. For every Chandra there is an intellectual like tamiyo.
Fantasy follows conventions, but so does mythology. For each Athena their is an Aphrodite. Chandra isn't your typical girl, she's a one in a million. She represents a feminine ideal. If you have a problem with the focus on materialism and superficial traits inherent in the feminine ideal then you have a problem with the dominant patriarchy and the memes of commercialism. Don't blame Wizards of the coast for a gripe you have with society.

Darn...
I was hoping for the 20th anniversary core set they would do something nostalgic. Its a core set so they dont have to follow the current stories, they could have done anything.
I was personally hoping for Urza, the old poster boy, finally getting a planes-walker card, like a what would have been if he had lived threw the mending. I dont know, how they'd spin it or what. But it would have been cool if Urza, as well as a bunch of other nostalgia was back for the 20th anniversary.
But alas, no promotional Urza art...

3D art is great for consistency, but it's like this guy didn't use photo reference for her body or something.
And yeah, she has hair, and it's on fire. Not one or the other.

Well, takes a spark to start the fire, right?
I'm too curious what'll go in M14. I mean, it's Magic's birthday year. Cool stuff is bound to happen.
