So this set is basically Voice of Resurgence and a few other chase mythics that were put in to sell packs and a bunch of boring cards that won't even be fun in limited.
Ugh... did the Cipher Rare really need to be freaking Sleight of Mind?!
I really dig the double Exsanguinate for EDH (like the original wasn't bad enough...)
If I read that cipher rare correctly, you can change a land type to another. You might be able to cripple your opponent's manabase, especially if you cipher it early.
Some of you folks have some ridiculous standards.
This set has some *great* cards at every Rarity.
It has some stinkers, but so does every set, ever.
How many playable Rares were there in NPH?
Almost certainly fewer than this.
And this has at least as many awesome Mythics.

I rate this set 3/5 Homelands
I'm getting a vibe that it was meant as an intentional depowering of the game, which has been in the works since Zendikar- once INN rotates, we'll lose most of the power cards and be in homelands 2.0
Or a least we would, but we'll still have too many pushed and broken cards like thragtusk, voice, whatever else, and instead of being homelands 2.0 we'll be in a "99% of cards are jank, only a couple decks are playable"
These cards are pathetically underpowered even for limited's sake, and design completely dropped the ball and phoned in half this block. Heck, an entire guild was destroyed, 1/5 of the entire block, because design screwed up the mechanic and development couldn't balance it in time, so rakdos got their keyword as a filler mechanic they wrote in 10 minutes on the basis it couldn't be broken

If the other person only has basic lands. I don't think this can target nonbasics so the color screw it just not going to happen in Standard [or elsewhere except maybe as tech vs Mono-Red]?

To the people that say that a card needs to be a higher rarity because of Limited... I hate you guys so much. I present to you with this.

It's until end of turn, so you won't be crippling anything.

Not sure; says basic land type, and the types on the shocks are basic land types (though not basic lands).
Whats up with golgari ffs, only one common creature with scavange and 2 multicolour creatures both of which are uncommon and all three are 4 or 5cc, how can you make a deck out of that? Also every black card except blood scrivener has a higher toughness then power which is really weird since thats kinda blue and whites slice of colour pie, while red and black get the X/1's and X/2's normally. Higher power would also work better with scavange (Varolz and Flesh). Overall I truly dislike what they did to my favoriet guild. Really seems sloppy designing to me. Gruul looks awesome though.
If you read Mark Rosewater's article for the day, he comments on this. He says that in order to further differentiate black and red, black will be getting more creatures with higher toughness than power.
Trait Doctoring... geez, that's an odd one. It's Mind Bend as a sorcery, but can be ciphered. But it only lasts until the end of the turn? Huh. I guess that makes it worse for permanent land hosing/fixing, but better for repeatable color exploiting (Blue Elemental Blast). Definitely needs to be built around to be made awesome.

Dimir got shafted again, and that is the only thing I care about from an emotional standpoint. I also hate seeing utility cards like Voice of Resurgence printed a mythic given that Wizards originally said that mythic slots were for cards that "feel" mythic, not chase utility rares. I hate basically everything about this set and will only get over my dislike of it if the set is insanely fun to draft.

its an effect that will only activate on your turn and lasts til EOT. So I guess you can cripple their mana base for their instant speed cards only.

We once threw tantrums and fits when we started seeing hatebears at rare instead of uncommon, for the 'transparent money grab', and now we've got one at mythic and theres nobody with high enough expectations to be let down anymore

Rubblebelt Maaka - Gruul got a red Hill giant/ Giant growth!
I'd be fairly pleased to go Gruul for the prerelease. Some decent commons (Maaka, Weapon Surge (Overload R/1R +1/+0 First strike), Riot piker, Punish the enemy, Thrashing Mossdog, Alice Cooper the mana fork, and Scab clan giant.
Ideally, with a good Rakdos or Golgari pool.

Okay, I take it back. The card is horrible.

That doesn't count lol. I'm seriously disappointed that they left Izzet out

Seriously?!
Those are two of my favorite cards of the set.
