Did Apocalypse Hydra see any play? I feel like these cards are similar enough to make the comparison. Savageborn can come down with fewer mana spent on X to do the same damage as Apocalypse and their use after they enter varies a bit, but they generally give twice the damage you put into X. The Apoc kills creatures and burns out players while the Savageborn grows larger and interacts more favorably with pump effects. Different metas and all but I feel this is just a huge limited bomb and perhaps an entertaining EDH card.
That art is fantastic though. I'd almost play it just to look at it.

it saw some play, but maybe not as much as savage hydra because the art wasn't as good IMO.
oh, and blitz decks were less common in apocalypse's time.

Does Rakdos, Lord of Riots can give you free +1/+1 counters on a card like this one?
Like if I have Rakdos in play, then cast a lightning bolt to deal 3 damages to my opponent, then I pay only a green and a red mana without paying anything for the X, will this come into play with 3 +1/+1 counters?

Yes. You declare X to be 3. The cost of the spell is now 3RG. The 3 colorless is reduced by Rakdos.

It's one thing that so many of you actually think this card will see play.
It's another that you think it will see play in blitz-style aggro decks.
This creature obviously wants you to have lots of mana, something blitz-aggro decks aren't exactly good at. This card won't see play in constructed but if some Timmy want's to make a Gruul ramp deck I'm sure you will see some at FNM.

This card is so much better than Primordial Hydra that I don't wanna live on this planet anymore with all these "pfft, Primordial > this" comments.
I see where you're coming from, but I still disagree.
Consider this- neither creature has haste.
By the time you get to attack with it, a 10/10 PH will be 20/20 with Trample.
This Hydra doesn't grow without more mana investment, and requires an extra card like you mentioned to get the Trample PH comes with.
The difference is smaller than I may have initially implied,
but I would still side with PH.
NOTE: I mainly play EDH, where you'd be casting either one at a huge size.
Looking at this card in terms of Standard I can see your point-
this is def. better at smaller sizes.

Soooo the 3 guilds we haven't seen the mythics for are Golgari, Dimir, and Orzhov? Let's hope they are as decent as the ones for the other guilds. Gotta say, lame ass rehash rocks aside, I love me some RTR block.

Spot on. This is probably the best Hydra put out in a long time (if not, ever) and is easily given trample. A 5 drop that eats Thragtusk and it's ilk? How is that not solid. It can grow when you want it to and it doesn't take the spot of any specific mana as it's CMC is flexible. I'm thoroughly impressed by this Hydra.

Well yeah I was obviously talking about Standard, where Primordial Hydra is junk and this is at least a contender.
But even in EDH I think both cards are sweet. Yes Savageborn Hydra doesn't grow automatically, but it also needs it less: it's always 2X/X creature, thanks to Double Strike. Plus, shenanigans with pump is just too juicy to pass up. This carries equipment like no other hydra (Loxodon Warhammer, anyone?). And, if you ever get one of the million infinite mana engines going, you just make it large enough to eat one of the players at the table. That looks pretty sweet to me.
Me thinks that all the mythics will have a converted mana cost of 2.
simic, rakdos, izzet and azorius mythics are more than 2 CMC.
Also, I love this hydra. oh, who am kidding, i love anything with double strike. maybe this will see standard play, but probably not until after rotation, but who knows. only time will tell.
EDH is like French fries: some people like waffle cut, crinkle cut, or plain old straight cut, and while there's slight flavor difference and personal preference, at the end of the day they're still fries.
This is an excellent card, but I dislike the fact that its activated ability can be used only at sorcery speed; that prevents its controller from making it more powerful during combat, which would make extreme sense for a creature from the Gruul guild.
Also, why are the champions only regular rares, when they represent unique individuals, while card such as this, which may or may not depict unique beings, are mythic rares? That seems to be illogical, to me.

However, I much prefer the Champions at rare.
They'll be cheaper in foil.
Having all of these uber-playable Mythics is not terribly cool, though.
I guess they were worried about the set not selling as well as the previous two?
