It's an instant speed 5/5 trampler for 4. Wtf do you people want seriously? It has applications in populate/ above the curve beats decks, or in Bant control/ flash. I seriously think anyone mad at this card for any reason other than losing an attacker to instant speed wurm, should go home and make their own awesome card game and leave the rest of us alone.
I like this in my Yeva deck, with the standard first two turns of ramp (Mana dork and Farseek), I can get Yeva out Turn 3, drop this on my opponent's turn 4 as a 4/4, then on my Turn 5 up it to a 6/6, swing and Ghor Clan for 20 Trample.
I don't see much real possibility in constructed. Even at X =5, he's a likely more expensive Ghoultree with 2: Put a +2/+1 counter on it. If he were good, people would be playing the tree, now. He's another toy for Rosheen Meanderer, though. Seriously, one day, she'll have enough awesome X spells...
Just once, I would like them to print one of these that starts at 1/1 so it doesn't die immediately if I cast it for free somehow.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
Don't overestimate this guy or underestimate him. The way I see it, he's in exactly the mold of what people who like Thragtusks and Huntmasters like to play.
Jund has been a good deck since the printing of Broodmate Dragon, a phenomenal one since the printing of Bloodbraid Elf. It's changed, and it's original list has rotated, but the spirit of Jund lives on in Vampires and Kessig Wolf Run.
The big, meaty, smashy stuff. This guy doesn't have a tempo-ability, and that hurts him a lot because Thragtusk and Huntmaster both do. But he might not need one because Double strike is a hell of a mechanic when (ab)used properly. Take for instance Golgari shenanigans of many kinds. You can scavenge a creature onto this beast and get a lot more value than with a normal scavenge because of Double strike. You can get more use out of Gruul Bloodrush abilities too. And Deathrite Shaman is honest to goodness mana ramp in Black, meaning you allow yourself access to lots of things going straight Gruul obviously does not get.
It's not absurd to imagine that Merciless Eviction could be a one-of in a deck like this, if Obzedat's Aid finds it's way into being used for pretty much any and everything.
4x Deathrite Shaman
4x Thragtusk
4x Huntmaster of the Fells
4x Doubling Beast
4x New Wurm
4x Blink Angel (for Thragtusk primarily)
4x Ghor-Clan Rampager
4x Boros Charm
running mostly off of Forest-Duals...this card might not be a huge player if this type of strategy gets beaten out by a new Tier 1 Deck, but does offer what is essentially 'an over-powered Wolf Run' effect. The sky is definitely not falling, but it's not a boring day for spoilers either.
What I would really like to see is if anything in White, Blue, or Black suggest a serious shift to the metagame that disrupts whether the Thragtusk Decks are good enough anymore or not.
I am probably every color-combination it is possible to be, though it's really hard to figure out what it would mean to be 4-colored....it doesn't seem logical to be 4-colored without being 5-colored.

Because Ghoultree only gets cheaper as your creatures die, so you need to either dumptruck your Graveyard early game or wait?
And this says as long as you have 3 mana open you can cast it then make it bigger later? You can cast this on T3 as a 1/1 (fair), then on T4 make it a 3/3 (what it would normally be on T5). To get Ghoultree out by T3 you need 3 dead creatures and not every opponent will acquiesce to such a strategy.
So i have a question for you guys:
Does it seem like this is going to be a fun timr for standard. So far it seems like everyone wants to find a spot for each mythic. There hasnt been any dragon, dumb enchantment, anything.
Everything has a chance for play, even though some have higher than others.
Im really enjoying these cards.
I love spoiler season.
Can't wait to draft all summer loong

I fear I won't have much time to play Magic these days.
I get to watch worlds develop around me.
I get to watch great leaders, terrible oppressors, and trend setters rise and fall.
Limited, Standard, Modern, everything is a different playing field I feel I can observe, but will not actually touch.
I look forward to the stories I will hear.
And more so to the ones I will watch unfold first hand.
Isn't the unknown exciting?

If we're talking limited, a 1/1 doublestrike, pump effect for 3 is acceptable. It's pretty bad by constructed standards, though. By the time it's going to be large, you could cast Ghoultree for plenty cheap and 10/10 is plenty big enough. Even with Rancor and Rampager in standard, it still isn't good enough. I'll probably throw it in something just because, though. I love huge dudes as much as anyone.
From an EDH perspective, this guy would be fantastic in an Animar, Soul of Elements or Rosheen Meanderer deck. And I love how he can put more counters on himself, being able to continuously grow without help from an outside source is fantastic.
Edit- sweet God, I didn't even realize he had double strike on him. So much goodness.

It's not about the power, it's about the curve. This has it while Tree doesn't.
1/1 Doublestrike on T3 (or even 2/2 if you ramped in either previous turn) isn't impressive out of limited. It's effective, but not impressive. But if you don't have a T3/T4 drop on hand, it might freak your opponent into killing it, letting your next drop hit the ground running with one less removal in the way.
If you draw it late game, it's better, because the math on cost is better. If your opponent has played out their hand you can dump all your mana on it and make it a 7/7. If they have a card you can play it for 4/4 and leave some mana open.
But if you draw it early game, you neither have to play toward it nor sit on it. It's only a dead card before T3. (Okay, with a Mana Dork you can play it T2, but everyone would rather Farseek.)

Beat me to it! Was going to say holy Animar EDH batman!
Yeah, but some leave behind a 3/3 token....or come into play with a perk...like 5 life, a spell outa the graveyard.
And some are a bit harder to kill than this as well. Certain geists and Aristocrats, you know.
And these are all guys a creature strategy based mid range deck could use instead of this non-hasted, non-trampling guy, that dies to every imaginable removal out there!
Dies to removal isn't a valid argument. Only Norin doesn't die to removal..then again, there are a couple ways to kill him with removal, so nope, everything dies to removal.

Lol ok! I understand. Point is im tired of hearing "dies to removal". Of course it does lol. I can still like it.
I'll repeat it simply: This won't see constructed play for the same reasons Primordial Hydra and Protean Hydra didn't see constructed play. (sans EDH)
Double strike and a plethora of cards that interact with +1/+1 counters up this guys chance of being played. I'm not saying he will run straight into the top tier, but if there is an environment where this card could thrive in standard, it will probably be in the next year.
Personally I can see this card running well in a Jund, +1/+1 countered themed deck. Combined with Exava and Corpsejack Menace, running some ramp and Kesig Wolfrun, your gonna have a deck which could be tough to beat, if executed properly.
Seems good in a Jund or RUG aggro deck. The +1/+1 counters offer a lot of abuse in those colors, and double strike seems pretty aggressive off the bat, especially with both Vorel and Exava interacting with counters. The Simic could potentially make it huge, draw cards off of it, etc, while the Jund version would make it faster and more aggressive.
Sorry this card is bad. Its not even a slam dunk first pick in limited as its a mana sink and can be chumped all day long. You can forget about constructed play completely as Primordial Hydra is just so much better in almost every way except perhaps as a blocker. I'm stunned that this is mythic really.

Pretty damn good 3-drop.
What this guy said --->
Can you image if Student of Warfare was around with Rancor?
(translation: "i love me doublestrike! I love hydra!"
student of warfare was good because it was a 3/3 first strike on t2. not because it became a 4/4 double strike. that was just icing on the cake.

In standard, i think he will be great curving through corpsejack menace and blanka. Super pumped-doublestrike is my favorite ability
No **** Sherlock? Everything dies to removal.

IN which case, it just doesn't die to some removal.
But we always needs a dies to X in every thread about creatures.
