I have a Golgari hydra deck running 2 Primordial Hydra. But without seven mana, I'm wishing he could be better. Once he's plopped down he's a blocker until he gets trample.
With this new guy, I can pay less mana and still have him deal a bunch of damage until i can make him bigger.
This guy hits the table BEING aggressive because of double strike. I can still pay seven mana for him, and get a 5/5 with double strike. That I can make bigger every turn.
I don't know that he'll see play but he's got potential. 2/2 doublestrike for 2 and spare mana makes him bigger is pretty good. Not the greatest creature ever good, but good enough to be the right answer for some decks. The question is whether the support around him in his colors is good enough, really.
1R/: Savageborn hydra grows a new head. Use counters.
I think he's a little slow for the metagame, really. He's not going to finish you quickly if you have blockers. He could have made it if his grow ability was instant speed, I think. rosheen meanderer hydra tribal edh is getting good, though...
They're tried this "X P/T" Hydra thing for quite some time now. It honestly doesn't work, to be honest. No one plays Primordial Hydra or played Protean Hydra for a reason.
Good in limited, bad in constructed.
*edit*
Maybe the only place in constructed for this would be in a Corpsejack Menace deck.
So, I really like the card and I'm really leaning towards making a Jumd deck once Dragon Maze comes out. Like others have said the Rakdos Witch and a simple Rancor can make him a 4/2 Haste Trample Double Strike at T5 and pump him to 6/4 at T6.
That said he's an easy target and he does need others around him to make him work so I'm not sure he'll see constructed play but I'm more of a limited guy anyway so I wouldn't be very surprised if someone found a way to abuse him. Also I could be wrong but I think he loses to Frontline Medic. His counter just targets "X" spells right?
I'm fairly certain that if you follow Corpsejack Menace with this fellow, he'll be an 8/8 double-striker if you hit all of your land drops.
I like this card, and want him to be constructed playable. I'd like to see him flashed in by Yeva for a surprise gigantic guy that might be lethal. Excellent with any trample provider. He probably doesn't make Crowned Ceratok any better, but even a guy that demands a chump block every turn is really good.

Yes, that's the ticket!. This seems pretty rude indeed.
T1: Forest + Arbor Elf
T2: Mountain + Farseek
T3: 2/2 Hydra, or Land + 3/3 Hydra, or Land + 2/2 Hydra + Rancor.
T4 Attack and bloodrush for Ghor-Clan Rampager for some sweet 12-14-16 damage. In case of 16 and opponent paying 4 life for their 2 shock lands is GG. If you have 2 rampager = GG
If I don't end up with Selesnya for T2, I will definitely use this little fellow. Has a lot of potential, since he is always a good draw, if you have it early or late game, it can still keep up with the game.
Hmmm, made me think of Apocalypse Hydra for a moment. This card seems a little bit better since you can keep growing it and buffs to its power apply twice. Carries Swords of X and Y quite nicely too. I like it - suitably mythic and won't cost me an arm and a leg to get one.
I like how the mythics are becoming a bit more toned down. It feels more like they are a rare sight while talking a walk through Ravnica instead of doomsday monster of untold power feel to them.
Okay so I know this will probably find room as a 1-of in R/G Gyre or R/G savagery, same thing. With domri rade he's very efficient with the fight ability, and gyre sage can sink so much mana into him, then ghor-clan rampager for lethal
Wizards wants hydra to be Greens FATTY of choice. but wizards has made 1 major flaw in that. They make hydras the same way every time and when they make a potentially good one. They nerf it. "sorcery speed"? as if this card would destroy any format being able to activate at instant. that ability if worse than Olivia voldaren's ping ability.
Wizards... if you want to make hydra the creature type for green might I suggest making an intentional accident. not Jace caliber accident. But baneslayer level. or thragtusk level. Just make a hyrda so good that if your playing green your obviously gonna play it.

With corpsejack menace, I get a 10/10 with double strike.
I think he will fit well into my deck.

A comic about the world's most addictive game, Magic: The Gathering.
1. You can cast him efficiently anywhere on your curve above 3
2. You can continue to use him as a mana sink and pump him(albiet at sorcery speed)
Now we just need some decent ramp in standard and RG will be a house.
