This is an excellent card, but I dislike the fact that its activated ability can be used only at sorcery speed; that prevents its controller from making it more powerful during combat, which would make extreme sense for a creature from the Gruul guild.
For what it's worth, the ability to activate it during combat would make it nearly unblockable (except for chumping) and unkillable in combat. The threat of activation on that thing would be way through the roof.

Are you saying that the creature would be too powerful if its ability could be used at instant speed?

They become too expensive for the more casual player to use. E.g huntsmaster is $32.
This.
I'd love to build a Bant deck for FNM,
but I don't want to spend $20 apiece on Voice of Value.
Progenitor Mimic and Council are a bit more reasonable,
but still more expensive than they'd be as Rares

This ain't one of the best hydras, not bad but maybe if it had trample or regenarate by sacrificing 1+1 counters like Experiment One, mmm... even if you are playing with ramp in standard the most this hydra can grow is a 5/5 by turn 4, which is not bad. I remember a deck i had that played a turn 3 Rosheen Meanderer followed by a turn four 14/14 Apocalypse Hydra, which was usually killed on sight...
it fits almost anywhere, combos with all sort of stuff for nuttiness and acts as a mana sink if needed.
even a 1/1 double strike for three with the option of a pump is not bad. Not great, but if that's your plan B..
Rancor and Wolf run synergize with this guy. They go good on any card in the deck, and now this guy makes it even more appealing.

It feels like bizarro world for spoilers in this set.
Everything that is good to great is barely being talked about.
Everything that is mediocre is pre-selling for $20+ as a Mythic and $7+ for a rare.
Everything that sucks (as of cards available now) is being hyped into crazy values.
PLEASE cast Azorius Charm against me with this guy coming at your face. I'll gladly recast it and pump it into oblivion the following turn before alpha-striking you or luck-sacking a Rancor/Wolf-Run.
It's an instant speed 5/5 trampler for 4. Wtf do you people want seriously? It has applications in populate/ above the curve beats decks, or in Bant control/ flash. I seriously think anyone mad at this card for any reason other than losing an attacker to instant speed wurm, should go home and make their own awesome card game and leave the rest of us alone.
If the store owner says that I can't trade in the premises, I'll just go outside. If he says that I can't trade within 10m of his premises, I'll go to 11 meters. If he says that he doesn't want to see me trading, I will put a basket over his head and continue trading.
Yes, he's a local legend. He's only known to take his clothes off before he goes into the Ladies' Lockerroom. Nobody knows what he does in there because he's invisible, but it's almost certainly tons of masturbating.
Assuming a turn 1 mana dork this guy is out on turn 2. Turn 3 pump him up to 4/4 and slap a rancor on him - 6/4 doublestrike trample. Turn 4 he'll be 10/4 doublestrike trample. There is no turn 5.
To all the "it dies to instant removal" sheep - At the worst this card forces them to use that removal. This is a card that requires an immediate answer.
So you don't draw him until Turn 5, or they kill the one you played out turn 2. It still hits as a 3/3 or 4/4 depending on the quality of your ramp, and the first time it swings - if it isn't blocked it's going to lop off better than 10 life.
Just because this card can be answered with putrefy, murder or what have you doesn't mean it's a dead draw. Worst case - 1 for 1. There are no wrong threats in Magic - there are only wrong answers.

They raise the price tag to play competitive standard by a ton and some people want to compete with 150 U$ deck and not 500 U$ ones...

Oh how I've missed you Student of Warfare/Kargan Dragonlord! Turn 3... mid-game... late-game... you pwn all the time!
There's way too many counter shenanigans for this guy not to be decent. I mean, double-strike. COME ON.
That is why I stopped playing Magic.
Its a great game, but the price tag of staying competitive in standard is too high for me. I don't really enjoy draft as much as I do constructed.
When you can easily buy a new computer for the price of building two competitive standard decks, something has gone awry.
