This is better for the game shops. My LGS always wound up sitting on a stockpile of whichever event deck was the lower value offering. They wound up giving a significant discount for purchasing a set.
I don't see how these decks are competive FNM play, we have tier one decks at our store, 30 out of the 35 people have Tier one decks, you play the event decks, you're toast.
This makes sense. There's always the one event deck that rots away on the shelf for months, hopefully this will alleviate some of the issue. I'm sure there will still be cases where the one event deck isn't in particularly high demand and languishes on the shelf, but at least store owners won't be forced to order a deck they know won't sell well, just to get their hands on one that will.
Also, I love how Monty just sort of tagged this on at the end of the post.

Not all FNM's are created equal. Some have 3 or 4 actual tier one decks played and with a bit of luck a good player can win a match up against them.

Lol yes I didnt even the notice the last part till I saw a thread about it here. Very sneaky sneaky wizards

This could potentially be a very good thing with everyone wanting a single deck that there is twice as many to get a hold of, or it could be potentially bad and there will be twice as many bad decks sitting around that your LGS will give you a free one just for buying a booster.
Only way to know is when we see the next event deck.
That's just the fun part, the shops can allocate how many decks they want. So if it's crap, they'll only get 4 for example, if it is really popular, they could allocate 50 or so.
When they had two Event Decks, they always got stuck with one, being the less popular one. So the shops had to balance out the advantage of selling good ones to the disadvantage of having stock not moving of the not-selling ones.
This is very good news. I feel very strongly that over-saturation of product is harmful to the long-term playability of the game. These event decks are often not worth the money, or, of they are worth the money, still largely unplayable.
I'd like to see event decks evolve into something where a much more viable, dynamic, playable deck for things like FNM emerges. It would be great if they designed these to be modestly competitive. One per set is a move in the right direction. Now if we could just reduce the amount of Duel Decks, Intro Packs, etc., that get printed like crazy, we'd be in business.
Now if we could just reduce the amount of Duel Decks, Intro Packs, etc., that get printed like crazy, we'd be in business.
Noooo, not the intro packs. They make it so that the supply of intro packs never run out, so long as that set is the newest set, and it was meant to be that way, the exceptions being the chase intro packs. They make them bad enough that some veteran players don't buy them up to sell them off on ebay.
Duel decks, I hear people like these things, but I'm not very fond of them.
I'm going to say this, like I said in the other thread, but WOTC isn't there to hold your hand to build a deck. Anyone who expects event decks to get more than 25% of wins is just dreaming.
You know they would sell more if they didn't put horrible rares into them. It's only the most simple thing ever, sell things that are in demand. The next event deck needs to be called the 10 guilds of ravnica and just include all 10 shocklands.
Or include snapcaster mage while he is still in standard. How long are they going to put out this BS that they are in it for the fun of the game when they decided to print mythic rares to make more money..... Price the above 10 guild event deck for $20 put it on Walmart shelves you will sell millions of units.
You are reaching the end of your self imposed sales life cycle for standard. This would create a surge of cash. Which is why they are including all 10 shocklands in the 3rd set, so the thing sells.
Mtg is at its highest popularity ever and you think they are struggling and are just trying to sell as much product as humanly possible?
Obviously they want to sell as much as possible to make money, but if they were really struggling here is what they would do. Abolish the reserved list and release a set that contains the power 9 and other powerful old cards. That set would move off the store shelves like it was on fire and they could print as much of it as they want.
All 10 shocklands appearing in DGM is not a cash grab its twice as hard to bust ANY SHOCK in DGM. So you get 2x more shocklands per booster box on average if you buy RTR or GTC.
As for "not selling well enough" these things seem to be gone from all of my local stores within a week or two after release. They seem to sell well here.
Well now that they have cut back on Standard Event decks how about a Modern Event deck
and as for the content of the event decks I believe there should be the shell for a competitive deck in there. Some of the more popular ones had this where you could actually just buy two or three of them smash them together and have a very competitive deck. I did it last season with Hold the Line and it worked out very well.

I think having to print 14 standard playable rares in a cheap product undermined their booster sales (in theory, of course) because with more choice of event decks, you also have a higher chance of just getting the cards you want from such a product instead of the less-efficient booster packs.
Event decks mainly contain chase rares from the previous block. The RTR and GTC event decks don't have chase rares from their own block, so booster sales are not really affected by it.
I'm kind of happy they did this if it means the one Event deck that's made doesn't suck. Every previous set has had an obviously superior deck and one that sucks. It leaves half the decks taking up space on the shelves and the other ones sold at a marked up price.
The good news about this is, we won't be seeing shelf warming event decks anymore.
The bad news is this that, if an event deck costs over $30, then the "plan B", wouldn't be the other event deck, which costs close to MSRP, but it would be, dun dun dun, the intro pack.
I seriously don't think they have to halve the number of event decks per year. Why not package event decks in a box so that each individual kind came from a separate box? I don't see how hard it is to do that. That way, there is no shelfwarming event decks, because the crappy one isn't tied to the good one, and the real people who buy event decks for what it is meant for, can buy the other option, rather than seeing an empty shelf, or a high price tag.
Thank god there will only be one per set, because at some shops they crack one for cards and sell the other one to newer players, which is completely unfair in my opinion.

But now this time they will crack one for cards, and sell uh, um, woah boy, I don't know what they are going to sell to newer players, uh, intro packs? I don't know... lol?
and so we have Selesnya...i'm happy because is my favourite guild, but i don't htink this will be worth buying for me as i already have all the good selesnya cards.

If Selesnya is the featured deck for the Event Deck, does that mean that is the guild that completed the Dragon's Maze first? Is that even how it works?

Whatever it is, I will facepalm if Emmara Tandris isn't in the deck. But it doesn't matter much anyway.
